The sun sets on Joshua Tree expeditions for the OBCA spring ‘26 season. We’re so grateful for our place in the California desert.  As we close out the season, we share these parting words from a student:

“This course has taught me so many valuable things that I will carry for the rest of my life. From community aspects, to challenging myself, I cannot express my love for this organization any more. The hardest part of the course (other than licking my bowl) was coming back to civilian life. These people who I was with for only three whole days have become my family. ”

Thanks to a generous donor, we were able to add another Pinnacle Scholarship expedition July 23rd - August 5th.

Plus we’ve got spaces on all of our other scholarships still. Download the flyer to send to a teen.
* Youth Leadership Corps — A wilderness expedition kicks off a year-long leadership cohort.
* Pinnacle Scholars — Two week alpine backpacking expedition for 14 - 17 year old teens
* Sliding Scale Courses — Affinity courses for POC young adults and LGBTQ+ teens

2026 Midpines Service Weekend

More than 30 OBCA volunteers and staff came together to make our annual Service Weekend a huge success!

With great weather and homemade pizza made by chef Gabe, our Service Weekenders helped assemble weatherports, build a carport, weed-whacked, secured washer and dryers, and much more, helping to bring the Midpines basecamp to life for the summer season.

Thanks to all who helped create an unforgettable event.

Remembering Scotty McAndrews

If you’ve spent time at our Midpines base, you know our community room "Scotty’s" was named in honor of Scotty McAndrews, a beloved Outward Bound California Instructor whose legacy continues to shape who we are today.

Scotty was the definition of a teammate. Whether he was leading students or serving on the Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol, he led with mental toughness, a work ethic that wouldn’t quit, and a perpetually positive attitude. He was even voted "Rookie of the Year" by his peers just two days before his tragic passing on April 6, 2006.

To this day, Scotty’s family generously support our McAndrews Professional Development and Expedition funding, ensuring that the next generation of outdoor educators can follow in his footsteps.

In this 20th anniversary of his death, we’re remembering Scotty as an OB student and a man who died making the mountains he loved safe for others.  Your legacy continues, Scotty.
