### Crocker Amazon Ballfields Approved to Be Named for Willie Mays
The Rec and Park Commission last week
approved naming the Crocker Amazon Baseball and Softball Complex the Willie Mays Fields of Champions (https://t.e2ma.net/click/c4drok/wfcl20hc/wrdmtw), honoring the legendary Giant and his enduring legacy of inspiring youth through sport.
The approved name would take effect as part of a proposed renovation of the western half of Crocker Amazon Playground, a long-anticipated project that would transform the park's baseball and softball fields into a state-of-the-art recreation hub for San Francisco families. The project remains subject to further review, community input and approvals. If approved, the project could break ground as early as 2027 and open in 2028.
The proposed renovation is powered by the 2020 Health and Recovery Bond and a partnership with the San Francisco Giants, who would contribute approximately $28 million in cash and in-kind support to the $50 million project. Improvements would address longstanding field closures due to weather and maintenance, while expanding access to a safe, high-quality play space by up to 10,000 additional hours each year.
In addition to approving the naming of the complex at Crocker Amazon Playground, Rec and Park Commissioners recommended that the Board of Supervisors accept the grant from the Giants. If the Board accepts the grant and the project moves forward, the Giants will designate the fields in honor of Willie Mays. Mays' Say Hey Foundation donated a $5 million lead gift that would help make the project possible.
The Willie Mays Fields of Champions would provide year-round play, support free youth programs like Junior Giants, and create a vibrant community destination. The larger park would still retain the name Crocker Amazon Playground.
The proposed project is still in the iterative design process and has evolved in response to community feedback. Community members are invited to attend one of two April 26 community workshop sessions to review and discuss the concept design:
### Crocker Amazon Baseball & Softball Fields Renovation Workshops on April 26

of the baseball and softball fields at Crocker Amazon Playground. Workshops will take place at the park's clubhouse (Moscow Street and Italy Avenue) on Sunday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be two workshop sessions offered to accommodate different schedules, with the first from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and the second from noon to 1:30 p.m.
These sessions will be hosted in an open forum format outdoors and project team members will be available to discuss various components of the project and answer questions. For more information and to RSVP, click the link below.

### Coyote Pupping Season in our Parks
With April well underway, it means that we're in the midst of coyote pupping season. While coyotes are generally wary of humans, parent coyotes may become territorial if you or your pet come close to their den area.
To foster a safe coexistence between you and our natural neighbors (https://t.e2ma.net/click/c4drok/wfcl20hc/oxgmtw), please take the following precautions:
* Never feed coyotes or any wildlife
* Keep dogs on leashes in our parks, unless in a designated off-leash dog play area
* Only admire coyotes from a distance
If you encounter a coyote, slowly back away, carrying any small children or pets. Do not run. You may also scare the coyote away by appearing large and making loud noises.
If you encounter a coyote or see someone putting out food for a coyote, report it to Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-9400, or by email at acc at sfgov.org (mailto:acc at sfgov.org).
For more information, visit ACC's coyote page at the link below.

### Interdepartmental Teamwork Saves a Stranded Sea Lion Near Ocean Beach
Late last week, Park Rangers on patrol encountered police activity at 48th Avenue and Irving Street, where a California sea lion pup had wandered out of the ocean and onto the street. With help from San Francisco Police Department officers, a nearby Marine Mammal Center volunteer, and Park Rangers Follin, Smith, Lawli, Wannamaker, and Gerstbacher, the pup was safely placed in a crate provided by the Ocean Avenue Veterinary Hospital and taken to the ranger station to await transfer. Our
Video of the Week (https://t.e2ma.net/click/c4drok/wfcl20hc/0qbntw)
comes from KPIX and highlights the rescue.
Now named Irving, the pup is in the care of The Marine Mammal Center, where he is undergoing treatment and rehabilitation. We're grateful to our park rangers and SFPD, whose interdepartmental coordination, quick thinking and compassion helped rescue Irving.
