I did think OB instructors were probably keeping that industry afloat prior to this — looking at you, Ethan. People are knitting, potlucking and having block parties. Just yesterday, I went to an in-person embroidery social, so I’m also in.

I don’t think Outward Bound is always ahead of the trends, but on this one, we’ve nailed it. We’re out here sleeping in tarps in Yosemite, navigating trails with a map and compass, and cooking around a tiny stove. Can’t get any more analog than that!

Challenge Course Growth 🌲

We released a Challenge Course video following a group of students from Thomas Edison Charter Academy, a San Francisco Public Charter School, as they navigate the Ropes Course.

It’s sooo good! These students really face their fears, not only about going up in the trees, but doing it in front of their peers. That’s hard. And then they show up and encourage one another and bring out the kindness.

The best part of the video is at 2:28 when Marie says to her friend, “It was scary.” And her friend puts her arm around her and says, “You did it.” It’s a sneak peak into the tenderness of teens.

As summer comes to a close (😢), we’re cheered up knowing that there are some incredible fall and winter adventures across Outward Bound. Our favorite is definitely the Joshua Tree desert expeditions. Clear skies for stargazing, mountains of boulders, and hidden canyons await.
