### SF Chronicle: 'Beautiful & Brand New' Gym Seeks to Inspire Future Athletes
San Francisco's Herz Recreation Center in McLaren Park, which opened earlier this month, is already serving as a sports and community hub for the city's south side. A recent San Francisco Chronicle article highlights the Jose Coronado Futsal League and Junior Warriors programs while detailing the longstanding community effort behind the state-of-the-art facility. The piece also notes the center's nickname, Renee's Place, honoring Renee Strong, a longtime Visitacion Valley advocate and Rec and Park employee who pushed for a neighborhood gym for more than 20 years. Read more from the San Francisco Chronicle at the link below and
hear Mayor Lurie talk with Renee at this link (https://t.e2ma.net/click/s8jfgk/wfcl20hc/0qbb4v).

### People of the Parks: Hip Hop on the Plaza
Hip Hop on the Plaza is back with a new season at Fulton Plaza in 2026, bringing fresh moves and high energy to Civic Center. The weekly series is powered by the All The Way Live Foundation--a partnership between the Civic Center Community Benefit District and Creative Grounds, led by husband-and-wife duo Sergio (left) and Freya (right).
Held most Friday afternoons through June, the program invites kids and adults alike to step into the cypher with breakdancing lessons, friendly battles, and open dance circles.
For Freya and Sergio, it's truly a family affair as their daughter Brooklyn (center) is a regular on the floor.
"This is Brooklyn's favorite day of the week," Freya shared. "It's where she can express herself, let go, and meet up with her friends."
"The goal is to give back," Sergio added, noting that the Tenderloin has one of the highest concentrations of kids in the city. "Dance is a good way for children to alleviate stress and anxiety."
Whether you're a seasoned b-boy or just learning to two-step, everyone's welcome. So, mark your calendar, bring your best moves, and let's break it down--Fridays at the Plaza.
People of the Parks is a series of short stories, based on conversations with people we meet in San Francisco parks. Learn about Hip Hop on the Plaza, including its next occurrence on Friday, January 30 from 4:30 to 7 p.m., at the link below.
