Hi everyone!!
I hope summer is going smoothly! I can’t believe we will be starting class
in just about three weeks. Tiersa and I have been working hard this summer
on curriculum, classroom systems, and new building blocks that will help
set everyone up for a successful school year.
Over the past two years, we have learned that shared classroom tools can be
very difficult to keep organized. Many supplies are misplaced, accidentally
taken home, or need to be replaced several times throughout the year. I am
not kidding when I say that every new container of pins seems to grow legs
and walk right out of the classroom. ;)
This year, we are asking each student to build their own basic sewing and
pattern making tool kit. Most of these supplies should last throughout all
four years at SOTA, and many students will continue using them in college,
at work, or for personal projects. I still have my Hello Kitty toolbox from
college, and I use many of those same tools at my business today!
Please contact me privately if purchasing any of these supplies creates a
hardship for your family. We will make sure every student has access to the
tools they need. No student will be excluded from an activity because they
are unable to purchase supplies. Our goal is not to leave anyone out or
make things difficult. We want to help students begin building their own
library of tools while learning how to care for professional equipment.
Our hope is that having their own clearly labeled supplies will help
students take greater ownership of their tools, keep the classroom more
organized, and give them what they need when working at home.
Please label the toolbox and every individual item with the student’s name
in permanent marker in a spot that wont rub off. Ideally, the toolbox will
stay in the classroom or in the student’s locker so it is available every
day.

What the Department Will Provide

Rotary cutters and sewing-machine feet are available for students to
borrow, but they are popular and limited in quantity. Students who enjoy
using these tools regularly may prefer to purchase their own.
If a student uses more than the provided two yards of interfacing for their
fashion show garments, they may need to purchase additional interfacing
using their fashion show budget.
Each student will also receive a stipend toward their fashion show fabric.
The amount will depend on grade level because each grade has different
project requirements.
I am SO excited for this year!! I have more updates to share, but I will
send another email once school begins because I do not want to overwhelm
everyone before we officially get started.
