Elena Hillard of Mission High School recently shared a story with us that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about. After their school’s five-day Outward Bound California expedition in Joshua Tree, a few students asked her what it’s like to change people’s lives for a living.

Ms. Hillard laughed at first because she thought they were joking. But they were serious. One student told her, “This was a life-changing course.”

I was inspired by that. I hear stories like this often, but there was something especially meaningful about students saying it directly to their teacher. She got a front row seat to their transformation.

Time outside gives young people the chance to discover their confidence and return home with a stronger sense of who they are and what they’re capable of.

That’s if they can get there. For many teens, meaningful outdoor experiences still feel out of reach because of barriers like transportation, tuition, and proper gear.

When students complete an Outward Bound course, they come back with stronger relationships, greater confidence, and a deeper sense of responsibility to themselves and their communities. Last year alone, 60% of our students received scholarship support, ensuring financial barriers didn’t stand in the way of participation.
