For some students, summer is a mental reset – a chance to step away from the daily demands of school and routine. But for many, the season is isolating, with long days marked by uncertainty and few opportunities for meaningful connection. For students on an Outward Bound California course, however, these months become a chance to build confidence, learn new skills and make forever friends.

In the weeks ahead, young people across California will backpack through Yosemite, rock climb up King’s Rappel, and learn they can do more than they ever thought possible. Away from their phones and with the opportunity for adventure and challenge, they’ll discover strengths they didn’t know they had.

One Joshua Tree alum recently reflected on their experience: “There's something about being able to fully realize your potential in a real way with no screens and no distractions. There's great beauty in being in silence with yourself."

Time outside gives young people the chance to tap into a stronger sense of who they are and see what they’re capable of. But first… they have to get there.

For many teens, meaningful outdoor experiences still feel out of reach because of barriers like transportation, tuition, and proper gear. That’s why your support matters so much.

When students complete an Outward Bound course, they come back with stronger relationships, greater confidence, and a deeper sense of responsibility to themselves and their communities. Last year, 60% of our students received scholarship support, ensuring financial barriers didn’t stand in the way of participation.
