Hi Kai,

When students finish an Outward Bound California course, they return home with a treasure trove of stories and experiences they had: summits reached, trails explored, campfire conversations shared, and endless stars and galaxies gazed upon.

But often, what they bring back to their communities is something much deeper.

Mia, a 17-year-old student from Los Angeles, who recently completed an Outward Bound California course in partnership with Anawakalmekak – an Indigenous-led, Los Angeles-based charter school – had this to say about her recent Fall experience: “I take every experience I gained in Outward Bound home with me, as a changed person with a new approach to life – with love. As an older sister, I hope I can bring that curiosity home to my siblings too."

I was struck by that last line.

Outward Bound experiences don't end when students step off the trail. The growth students experience has a ripple effect. They return to their families, schools, and communities with a renewed sense of confidence, empathy, and curiosity, influencing the way they engage with the world and others around them.

That's what makes these opportunities so powerful. At Outward Bound California, we work to ensure students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to experience that kind of growth.
