Zoo Hours Changing
Get ready to spring forward this Sunday with the start of Daylight Saving Time! This also means that daily Zoo hours will revert back to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., which will commence on Sunday, March 8.
CONSERVATION
World Wolverine Day
The first-ever World Wolverine Day is Tuesday, March 10, spearheaded by the Carnivore Conservation Compendium, to focus on the ecological needs and the threats this species faces. Although wolverines are listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, as an indicator species of ecosystem health, particularly high-altitude, snowy landscapes, they are ideal indicators for climate change impacts.
On Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., you can visit a special conservation pop-up table at the wolverine habitat by Komodo Crossing to learn about the need for conservation of this species, especially in the U.S., its significance, how climate ties into their survival, and what we can do to help the largest terrestrial mustelid.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Neurodiversity Celebration Week
A visit to the Zoo can sometimes be perceived as a place of serenity, or a chance to get away from the daily “noise.” But for some individuals, sudden shrieks, like the territorial calls emitted by black-and-white ruffed lemurs or the unexpected roaring by African lions, may lead to anxiety or discomfort.
We have been working to accommodate those with heightened sensitivities, who might need less social interaction or other challenges that neurodiverse individuals might face. From Tuesday, March 17 through Monday, March 23, we will host our first Neurodiversity Celebration Week, in tandem with the nationally recognized week, and host a dedicated day featuring information tables on Saturday, March 21.
As part of the ongoing program, we will have available a downloadable sensory guide to allow users to better navigate their visit. The guide offers helpful tips about different animal areas, and locations to take a breather away from the crowds. Since last year, we have also offered a complimentary "sensory bag," which can be checked out at the Membership Office. The sensory bag provides headphones, a communication card, and a variety of fidgets which serve as a calming effect to help manage sensory overload.
During Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we are offering early admission for members of the neurodiverse community. On Tuesday, March 17, in collaboration with James S. Brady Therapeutic Riding, the on-site equine-assisted therapy program, you can learn about their important work and meet some of their rescued horses and ponies. They will also have an information table on Saturday, March 21, along with other organizations. (Photo courtesy of James S. Brady Therapeutic Riding.)
