I Was Wrong About Everything

For most of my life, I thought I had oral health figured out.
Brush twice a day.
Floss when you remember.
Grab a piece of gum after coffee.
Good enough… right?
Except it wasn’t.
A few years ago I was constantly on the move. Airports, long days, too much coffee, too little time. And like a lot of people, the small habits that are supposed to keep you healthy slowly disappear when life gets busy.
I’d skip flossing.
Brush quickly.
Chew gum to “freshen up.”
Then one day I started asking a simple question:
What’s actually in the gum I chew every day?
The answer surprised me.
Most gum isn’t made from tree sap anymore like the old days. The “gum base” in a lot of brands is a mix of synthetic rubbers and plastics. It’s the same category of materials used in things like glue and tires.
I couldn’t unsee it.
If gum was supposed to help your mouth, why was it made with ingredients that sounded like they belonged in a hardware store?
So I went down a rabbit hole.
For almost two years I experimented with different natural gums, talked to dentists, tested ingredients, and ruined more batches than I can count.
Some were too sticky.
Some had no flavor.
Some tasted like chewing a pine tree.
But slowly, something started working.
Natural resins like mastic and spruce.
Ingredients dentists love like xylitol and hydroxyapatite.
A gum that didn’t just taste good, but actually supported your teeth.
That’s how [Underbrush](https://nathanandsons.com/products/remineralizing-gum) started.
Not because I planned to start a company.
But because I realized something simple:
The products we use every day should actually be good for us.
Turns out I was wrong about a lot of things.
And that mistake ended up becoming the best idea I ever had.
