Dear Students and Families,
I wanted to reach out with some important information about our Online
Algebra Acceleration course as we head into the final stretch of the
semester.
First and most importantly: *please don’t stress.* This course is meant to
be an opportunity - not pressure. It’s designed to help students move ahead
in math if they’re ready, but it is not meant to create worry or negatively
impact anyone.
A Few Important Things to Know
-
This course is for acceleration and extra math exposure.
-
There are *no negative grades or penalties* for staying enrolled.
-
Everyone is working at their own pace - and that’s okay.
-
We will always connect with families before any decision is made to drop
a student.
If you’re feeling unsure or even thinking about dropping the course, please
know: *it does not hurt to stay enrolled.* There is no downside to
remaining in the class. Even spending a little time exploring lessons,
practicing problems, or “fiddling around” with the platform can help build
familiarity and confidence.
And remember — you are not doing this alone.
-
Your instructors are there to support you.
-
On-demand tutoring is available if you need help with a concept.
-
If you’ve forgotten how to log in or are having trouble accessing the
program, please reach out to your mentor so we can help right away.
We know online learning can feel different or challenging sometimes. That
doesn’t mean you’re not good at math. It just means you might need a little
support with the format — and that’s completely normal.
Timeline Update
We are planning to extend the course deadline to *June 18*, which gives
everyone two additional weeks beyond the end of the school year. This
extension is designed to:
-
Allow extra time to complete coursework
-
Provide flexibility around spring break
-
Increase completion opportunities
-
Overlap with summer programs, when many mentors are still available
More time = more opportunity (not more pressure!).
What Happens If You Finish?
Students who successfully complete the course will be *automatically placed
in 9th grade Geometry*. If you later decide you would feel more confident
retaking Algebra 1, that conversation is always possible. The goal is
strong understanding and confidence.
There are also additional accelerated math pathways available in future
years, including:
-
Summer Geometry
-
Dual Enrollment opportunities
-
Algebra 2 / Precalculus compression pathways
-
In a nutshell, the A-G requirements (for college, are built into SFUSD
course selection, so no matter what, you will get what you need!)
In the coming weeks, you will receive a more personalized update about
individual pacing and next steps. This message is simply to make sure
everyone has consistent information and knows that flexibility is built
into this program.
We are proud of the effort students are putting in. Keep going - even
small steps count. And as always, reach out if you need help. We’re here
for you.
Warmly,
Melody Wong
