Hi Parents and Families,

I wanted to reach out and say welcome to Costumes and Fashion Design at
Ruth Asawa School of the Arts. I’m so excited to have your student joining
us next year!

I’m going into my third year teaching this department, and I love helping
students discover what they are excited about and teaching them the skills
to make those ideas real. Students have a lot of room to make creative
choices in this class, and we focus on helping them build the technical
skills to support those ideas through sewing, patternmaking, fashion
design, and construction.

Our class includes all four grade levels, so students learn in a mixed-age
environment where everyone is growing together. Throughout their time in
our department, they learn sewing basics, how to draft patterns from
scratch for any measurement, fabric manipulations, alterations, styling,
costuming, fashion history, and so much more.

This is a project-based class, and attendance is really important because
the work is hands-on and things can move quickly. The class is about half
independent work and half teamwork, especially when we are working on the
spring musical. There are also times during the year when students stay
after school for extra studio time, especially since not everyone has the
same tools or workspace at home.

Some highlights of the year are the spring musical in March, where we
costume the entire show in collaboration with musical and technical
theatre, and our fashion show in April/May, where students design and sew
their own garments based on an inspiration they choose. Students will
receive a stipend for fashion show fabric based on grade level and the
number of looks they are creating. We’re also hoping to add a December
showcase this year, where students can share their work with the public.

I also want to remind you that the deadline to secure your student’s place
at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts is *March 26.*

If you have any questions about the class or the school, feel free to reply
to this email. I’m happy to answer!! I am adding my co-teacher, Tiersa, to
this email as well! She had a daughter graduate from RASOTA a few years
back and can help answer any questions as well.

*Also, please save the date for New Student Orientation:Saturday, April
259:30 am to 12:00 noon*

A few of our current students and I will be there, so that will be another
great time to ask questions you or your child may have.

Talk soon!
