CONSERVATION
Celebrating the 10th Year of Saving Red-Legged Frogs
Last week, we celebrated the 10-year anniversary of our California red-legged frog conservation program and the 10,000th Zoo-reared frog to be released in Yosemite National Park! This milestone could not have been made possible without the successful partnership with Yosemite Conservancy, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
As the only zoo in the U.S. rearing red-legged frogs through metamorphosis and releasing juvenile and adult frogs to the wild, our conservation and veterinary teams contributed greatly not only to this rear and release program, but with expertise and husbandry innovations that have strengthened the health, genetic diversity and fitness of released frogs.
We have worked closely with National Park Service biologists to time releases for the greatest ecological benefit. On this occasion, we joined our partners in Yosemite National Park to release the symbolic 10,000th frog. Joining us there was our new CEO, Cassandra Costello, who came to not only represent SF Zoo, but to support our dedicated conservation team. A big win for this species and for conservation.
