### Mayor Lurie Celebrates Reopening of Tenderloin Children's Play Area

Mayor Daniel Lurie, District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood, City officials, and the community on Tuesday celebrated the reopening of the Tenderloin Recreation Center Children's Play Area, marking the completion of a major improvement project that transformed the space into a greener and more welcoming area for neighborhood children and families.

The $3.38 million renovation reimagined the recreation center's outdoor area, creating a dynamic, multi-functional space designed for nature-based play, learning, sports, and relaxation. The updated layout improves accessibility and better supports the wide range of youth programming and activities that take place at the center year-round.

The Tenderloin Rec Center is also expanding its operating hours and will now be open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving children and families more opportunities to enjoy the improved outdoor space on weekends.

The renovation project is a partnership between Rec and Park, Wu Yee Children's Services, KABOOM!, Mimi and Peter Haas Fund, Crankstart, Low Income Investment Fund, the San Francisco Department of Early Childhood, Tenderloin Community Benefit District, UP ON TOP, GLIDE, Cross-Cultural Family Center, Street Soccer USA, and the San Francisco Arts Commission. ### San Francisco No. 6 in Trust for Public Land's Annual ParkScore index

San Francisco has once again been recognized as one of the nation's best park systems by the Trust for Public Land, ranking No. 6 in its annual ParkScore index. From waterfront parks and neighborhood playgrounds to trails, groves and open spaces, every San Franciscan lives within a 10-minute walk of a park. Thank you to the dedicated staff, volunteers, partners and supporters whose work helps keep San Francisco's parks vibrant, welcoming and accessible for all. Learn more at the link below.

### Rec & Park Commission Greenlights Permit Extension for GGP Concerts

San Francisco's popular Golden Gate Park Concerts series could continue through 2035 under a proposal advanced last week by the Recreation and Park Commission, paving the way for more major live music events on the Polo Field at Golden Gate Park, free concerts around San Francisco, Sunset and Richmond District neighborhood funding, and millions of dollars in support for city parks and services.

The concerts are separate from the annual Outside Lands Music Festival but are produced by the same organizer, Another Planet Entertainment, and have traditionally taken place the weekend immediately following the festival using a smaller footprint centered on the Polo Field.

Since launching in 2024, the concerts have drawn approximately 55,000 attendees per day and generated nearly $2.9 million in permit fees for the City over two years while bringing visitors from around the world to San Francisco.

In addition to the Golden Gate Park Concerts series, the agreement would continue bringing free live music to San Francisco through Another Planet Entertainment's SF Free Concerts series - three free concerts held annually in key locations around the City such as Embarcadero Plaza, Civic Center Plaza, Union Square or Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.

The proposal will next be considered by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Learn more at the link below.

### TLC Program Celebrates Van Donation from SFFSR

Rec and Park celebrated last week a new van donation from San Franciscans for Sports and Recreation (SFFSR) during the annual Tennis and Learning Center (TLC) Playday at the Goldman Tennis Center (50 Bowling Green Drive) in Golden Gate Park. The van will help expand access to free tennis programming for underserved youth across San Francisco.

An unveiling ceremony took place at the TLC program's end-of-school-year event, where youth also participated in tennis and Mobile Rec activities, listened to music from a live DJ, and enjoyed some BBQ. Thank you to SFFSR, including its Executive Director Seth Socolow, for their commitment to supporting youth and tennis in San Francisco.

### Bayview Safety Swim & Splash Program Honored at Rec & Park Commission

In honor of National Water Safety Month, the YMCA of Greater San Francisco presented an update on the Bayview Safety Swim and Splash (BSSS) program to the Recreation and Park Commission earlier this week. The program, which was developed through the
India Basin Waterfront Park (https://t.e2ma.net/click/49wnsk/wfcl20hc/kmxk5w)
Equitable Development Plan, is a partnership with Rec and Park and the project partners.

This free learn-to-swim program, based out of Martin Luther King Jr. Pool, serves youth ages 6 to 14 who live in or attend school in the 94124 ZIP code in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. The goal of the program is to ensure every child is water safe by sixth grade, meaning they can swim, float, breathe and get to safety if needed. By becoming water safe, Bayview-Hunters Point youth will be able to enjoy their beautiful new waterfront park to the fullest.

Now in its fourth year, the program is wrapping up its spring session, which is anticipated to bring the program total to nearly 1,350 lessons for community youth. We're grateful to the BSSS staff on the ground, as well as the YMCA, for their dedication to fulfilling a promise to the community. Learn more about the program at the link below.

### Rec & Park Employee Omar Dudum Recognized for Good Deed

At last week's Rec and Park Commission meeting, General Manager Sarah Madland took a moment to honor truck driver Omar Dudum (pictured left), who recently went above and beyond to help a member of the community. While working near Mother's Meadow in Golden Gate Park, Omar found a lost wallet. Instead of simply turning it into lost-and-found, he tracked down the owner and drove across the city to hand deliver it safely back to her. The owner of the wallet was so moved by his selflessness and integrity that she reached out to Rec and Park to ensure he was recognized for his good deed. We're grateful for Omar's dedication to the people of San Francisco and our parks.

### Softball All-Star Games Brings Together Top Players in San Francisco

The girls' softball all-star games took place at Rossi Playground earlier this month, featuring players selected by coaches for their sportsmanship, attendance, effort and teamwork. More than 40 girls competed in the games, with the 10U matchup featuring high scores from both teams and the 14U game ending in a tie. All players received certificates and goodie bags. Congratulations to all the players, and we look forward to seeing them back on the diamond next season. Learn more about Rec and Park's girls sports offerings at the link below.
