Hello! I realize this is a shot in the dark, but has
anyone ever rented an apartment in Paris that is
child-proofed? We are going to be in Paris with our
11-month old twins in May/June and need an apartment
for 8 days. If you have had success and have a
contact, please let me know! Thanks so much.

3. Hellish mealtimes with 1 year olds
--------------------------------------------------------
cat_shattuck - 1/12/2012 1:50 pm
Hi there, we have 13 month old (11 months adjusted)
girls. One eats relatively well. The other, however, is
a very fussy eater. Not picky -- she will eat pretty
much anything, though not at every meal -- but she
fusses like mad as soon as we put her in the high
chair. She strains against the straps and whines and
whips her head from side to side. She will usually eat
pretty well, but there is a lot of whining and crying
in between. She will feed herself finger foods but when
it comes to things like yogurt or oatmeal, she's not
adept enough for a spoon. As a result, feeding her is a
combination of her and me. When I offer yogurt, say,
she might turn away. But if I get some on her lips,
she'll then open wide and eat it. Then she eats happily
for a minute, until she starts thrashing again. This
repeats itself endlessly until the meal is over. I've
tried not spoonfeeding her anything and letting her do
it herself, only feeding her myself, only liquid, and
everything in between. For a while it got so bad I took
to feeding her at off-times on the living room floor,
picnic-style, but obviously that can't work for the
long haul. Has anyone else experienced this and do you
have any advice?

4. 5 year old crying at school drop off
--------------------------------------------------------
aimeen - 1/12/2012 12:53 pm
One of my twins has a very hard time with drop off at
school. He cries very hard and physically grabs onto
the parent dropping him off, saying he doesn't want us
to go. The teacher needs to take him physically so we
can walk out, where then he still cries for a bit. But
then all reports are that he does calm down and engages
fine at school (though he is quite shy, especially
compared to his twin we call the Mayor since he is SO
outgoing), This is way worse with my husband--he is
very bonded to him. And it took a year (no
exaggeration) for the crying at drop off to stop at
preschool, and his last 6 months or so there he did
fineWe just started mid year kindergarten last week and
the first week of drop off was fantastic. He did
great, so I'm sure the teacher thought I was nuts with
my warning, but it's starting to happen and this
morning was a doozy by all accounts (my husband did the
drop off).Does anyone have any tips on how to make this
better for all of us? We've tried everything but I
won't list what that is in an effort to encourage
advice. thx!aimeemom to declan and rutger (11/19/06)

Your son sounds exactly like mine. He was in preschool
from 3.5 - 5 years and the first year, he cried
everyday. The last 6 months were great, like something
clicked and he was fine. Then came kindergarten. He was
fine the first 2 weeks. The novelty wore off after
that. He was sad and protested all the way to school
that he didn't want to go to school. Then, he started
learning. He loved music and sang all the songs at
home. He loved art, science. So, I keep the weekly
schedule and try to get him excited to go to school by
saying, "You have music today! Your favorite!" or PE,
or ART. I also would say, "You'll have hot lunch today
(in the cafeteria)! or "I put a surprise in your
lunch!" It helps some, but like you, our son is more
attached to dad. He gets more sad when dad drops him
off. But after 4 months of K, he's really doing better!
I think it gets better over time. One little thing
that helped some was I try to tell him (and my
daughter) on the way to school, to say, "I'm going to
have a good day today!!" I tell them that if they say
it, it will happen! It worked for a couple of weeks.
But I think that has worn off too. It's really
hard!Good luck. I know what you're going thru. At least
feel you're not alone.Susan--- On Thu, 1/12/12, Aimee

6. Napping during growth spurt?
--------------------------------------------------------
carogamse - 1/12/2012 10:15 am
Hello, my 6 month old son recently has been extremely
cranky and has been crying all the time. In the last
few days, he can't sleep through a nap, he wakes up
after 30 mins and just cries and cries--for 20 mins or
longer. We used to let him just cry and fall back
asleep, but it never took him more than 5 minutes.
Now, I think he's having a growth spurt (I just offered
him a bottle when he woke early and he's chugging it
with gusto!). My question is, how did you maintain a
sleep schedule during a growth spurt? Should I offer
him some milk just before a nap? Or just let him wake
and feed him then? I tried offering some solids in
place of milk, but this did not satiate him. He has
also been waking more during the night, but not every
night. Any advice regarding how you managed a spurt
would be helpful! My daughter does not seem to be
having this right now, she sleeps well and is not
cranky at all. Thanks!

Give him a bottle before the nap. I vaguely remember a
phase like this around 6 months... once we got on a
good schedule of 3 solid meals plus bottles sleep got
much better. Also, are you sure its not teething?

I have never been afraid to feed my kids when they
started night-waking (or nap-waking or not going down
for naps easily). I know people who've struggled to
wean from night feedings or get on a good nap schedule
are sometimes afraid to add a bottle back but in my
experience it's short-term. If he chugged with gusto
today, I'd offer a bottle before naps until he starts
refusing it.

9. NTR: Advair Nasal Spray??
--------------------------------------------------------
petermolly - 1/12/2012 6:06 am
Hello all,My 5 year old son is always congested. The
doctor said the first level of treatment would be to
try a nasal spray called Advair which has steroid in
it. It could fix his problem after a couple of months.
That would be great, but we are concerned about the
steroid component. Has anyone used this and would be
willing to share your experience? Thanks for any
info.Susan

Hi,I don't think there's any 'standard' based on what
I've seen on SFPOM. Some give all federal holidays (10
days). Because we have to work some of those holidays,
we discussed with our nanny when we hired her that we
could not give her a few of those bank holidays off.
Instead, we'd give her, for example, the day after
Christmas and the day after Thanksgiving off.I hope
this helps.Lisa

We outlined in the contract 8 paid holidays, the exact
same that I had off as paid from work. MLK, Pres Day,
Memorial, 4th of July, Labor, 2 for Thanksgiving, 1 for
Christmas. No Columbus Day.It's not too late to
outline these in writing so that you don't have to have
the conversation every time and your nanny can plan her
3-day weekends.
