As so many kids do, we have a friend (11 year old boy)
with cancer (Tcell NH Lymphoma). We are looking for
books for the child with canceras well as for
sibs/friends so they can better understand what
thedisease is and how to help themselves and their
friend.Any recs?

My 6mo b/g twins are going through a flux stage and I
would love some advice. They have been sleeping
through the night since 3mo and napping relatively
well. For the last month, however, my son has been
awake crying each night for about 1-2 hours on average
(sometimes up to 4 hours) and is not napping very well.
I am still keeping them on a 3 naps a day schedule,
with 90min nap at 8:45, 30min nap at 12ish, and 60min
nap at 2:30. My son has been waking more and more, and
is so so so cranky during the day, especially in our
old "witching hour" from 4:30-6:30ish. We try to keep
them up until 6:30, feed a bottle and they are sleeping
by 7pm, and I get them out of their room at 7am (though
they wake earlier, usually around 6am, and babble until
then). The earlier I put them down at night, the
earlier they wake up. The altered sleep has been going
on for a month, and I keep assuming it's teething, but
no teeth appear! I've tried feeding a ton, since some
days my son is ravenous, but on most days he's not, and
he's never starving in the morning, even after a rough
night. Has anyone else had random sleep disturbances
and crankiness with no obvious cause around this age?
I am thinking of trying a new nap schedule, but am not
sure if I should. My kids still eat 5x/day at 7:30,
10:30, 1:30, 4:30, 6:30, and aren't ready for fewer
feeds. I'm doing solids 1x/day at 8:15am, not sure if
the kids want/need more. Any advice would be
appreciated! Thanks!

I used and liked Tracy Massillon. She was wonderful.
This was the review I wrote her her when my twins were
3 months old. In the end, I breastfed my twins
exclusively 8 months, and then supplemented/breastfed
for another 2 1/2 months. Overall, I felt really good
about how everything went.Here is Tracy's email address

met Tracy at a "Meet the Doulas" event at natural
resources. She was present as a post-partum doula.
After speaking with her, we were impressed with her mix
of western and alternative medical practices and her
emphasis on lactation support. After the birth of our
first child, we were having problems getting the
breastfeeding to work. Three lactation nurses at UCSF
had given us advice, but our daughter was still losing
weight. I was panicking. We had thought we would call
Tracy once we came home from the hospital, but we
called her on day 4 to ask her to come to the hospital
to help us with breastfeeding. She was wonderful. She
started by having me pump some to see how my milk
production was coming along. Based on this, she could
unequivocally say that my milk was coming in and start
putting my mind at ease that everything would get
better and quickly. Next, she watched my daughter
feed. Where we had been using nipple shields and
trying to force the feeding, Tracy took the approach
that we should see what my daughter could do on her
own. Low and behold, my daughter latched on by herself
and did great. In just a few minutes, Tracy had
everything working and had made me feel like I could
handle being a mother. She is a great teacher. She
slowly went through what to do, what to look for, and
how to know when things were or were not working. My
mother, who struggled to get breastfeeding to work with
her three children, marveled that breastfeeding was
pain-free for me; no cracked nipples, no painful lumps,
and little stress. My ability and enjoyment of
breastfeeding my daughter is largely due to her
excellent instruction.When I became pregnant the second
time, I was shocked to learn I was having twins. One
of my first thoughts was disappointment that I wouldn't
be able to breastfeed them, as this had been one of the
highlights of my relationship with my daughter. After
doing some reading, it seemed possible to breastfeed
twins, albeit more challenging. I contacted Tracy, who
was now a lactation consultant, to tell her our
surprising news and ask her to be on call for help if
we were having trouble. When our babies were born, my
husband and I had the tools we needed to get the
breastfeeding to work. In fact it was so successful,
that our twins had gained weight by the fifth day
without any supplementation -- apparently almost
unheard of for twins. We had parades of doctors and
nurses coming through our room to congratulate us on
how successful our breastfeeding efforts had been. The
first evening we went home from the hospital, we met
with Tracy to set up breastfeeding stations at home,
talk about how to make it work while still parenting
our toddler, and other logistics. Tracy gave us a
plan. Then she was there for moral support by
email/text/phone whenever I would become concerned. It
was amazing. She would reassure me about weight gain,
troubleshoot breastfeeding issues, and counsel me on
breast medical questions. My twins are now nearly
three months old, and I have exclusively breastfed them
this whole time. I feel very proud of our efforts, and
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Tracy for helping me
fulfill this goal.

I highly recommend Annie St. John, RN. She was a
Lactation Consultant atCPMC for 14 years, before she
decided to start her independent practice. Sheis
loving, warm, and extremely knowledgeable. Shešs the
kind of person youjust want to hang out with in any
circumstance. She will come to thehospital and your
house, and also can be available as a day doula.
