I recently hired a nanny from a job posting on
Care.com. It was well-worth whatever they charged for
their service. (which I think is about $50?)They have a
good intuitive online interface. You post your job and
then you get messages everytime a caregiver applies for
the job. You can see their profile and their message
directly to you. You get to email back and forth with
care givers and see their profile without having to
distribute your personal email/phone number until you
want to dislose that. You can see references and
background checks, when those are available from the
candidate. You can organize your search and "say no
thanks" to caregivers. We posted our job opportunity
in early December. We got about 15 responses. We had a
few flaky respondents and we had 2 that didn't read our
salary information... and we weren't totally on it. So
we reposted the job opportunity with a more descriptive
subject line -- and we got 25 respondents. We hired
one of them and she has started. I think Care.com was a
fairly easy way to accomplish this stressful life task.
There was a moment before I reposted where I seriously
thought about posting the job on Craigslist -- and I am
so thankful that I didn't do that!!! I found the
candidates to all be seriously looking for a job....
The challenge for me was that some were 19 and lived in
San Francisco (with no work history) and some were 50
and had been a nanny for 20 years and live in
Concord... So we ended up hiring someone in between
-- not too young, not too experienced, local, and
loving -- she is a Phd student and wanted a solid
long-term, part time gig - and that worked for us. We
are paying $20/hour 'over the table' for 5 month old
twins to be cared for 20 hours a week. We had
applicants that would have taken less money (as low as
$15/hour) and were young and less experienced. We had
applicants who were more interested in $22-$25 'under
the table'. These folks usually had a lot of nanny and
twin experience. From my side, the care.com experience
was very good. I really am not sure why anyone would
not use them!
