Passing this along for a grad student, in hopes of
finding dads interested in providing a little info for
her thesis (& please feel free to pass this along as
well!):****************I am a Mills College student
currently recruiting participants for my thesis project
on fatherhood. If you know any fathers with children
less than 18 months old who are living with the mother
of their children could you please ask them to
participate in this online survey? Past research on
childrearing and the family has focused mostly on the
mother-child relationship. Yet common sense tells us
that fathers are important too. I would like to know
more about the father's perspective. Fathers Who
Complete The Survey Will Be Entered In A Raffle For A
$100 Amazon.com Gift Card!Their participation would
involve completing an online survey about their
feelings regarding their roles as fathers. The survey
will take 20-30 minutes to complete. Participation is
voluntary, anonymous, confidential, and greatly
appreciated.To participate go

Going back to work and would love recommendations for a
pump for "on the go use" that has GREAT performance. I
am renting the hospital Medela Symphony (and it works
GREAT). This one is too bulky to travel with and carry
around. Appreciate your advice. Thank you!

Hi,My twins are almost three. At 18 months, we had a
short list of twin-friendly playgrounds that we went to
frequently. Playgrounds that are small or have an
enclosed toddler area, so the kids are contained and
can't wander too far or out of sight -1. 24th and Lake
(I think this is Rochambeau Park)2. Laurel Heights
Playgroun on Clay (at Laurel, I think)3. Julius Kahn
(in Presidio)4. Blue Playground on Funston and 9th in
Golden Gate Park I also like taking the kids to the
zoo. No cars, plenty of paved walkways, a playgorund,
etc. When they were smaller, it was a little (A lot!)
like hearding sheep, but a nice change of pace. Also, it
will get better/ easier to take them out by yourself.
They will start to stay closer to you, hold your hand
when you ask, and stop or come back to you when you
ask.Have fun!BetsyMolly and Liam - turning 3 in 9 days!

If you are willing to head out of the city there are a
few great playgrounds in Marin. Our neighborhood park
is wonderful. I have three under 4 and I feel totally
comfortable taking all of them there by myself. The
playground is fenced and there is a large stretch of
grass between the playground and (ample) parking lot.
There are picnic tables. Dogs are allowed in the grassy
area. It was renovated a few years ago so all the
structures are in really great shape. It's 10 min north
of the Golden Gate Bridge.Eastwood
Parkhttp://www.justplaygrounds.com/play/millValley/eastwood/index.htm(note
that review was written before playground was fenced
in)Directions:Located at the corner of Eastwood Way and
Glenwood Avenue in Tam Valley. From US 101 in Marin
County, take the CA Highway 1 North exit for Stinson
Beach (also indicates "to Muir Woods and Mt. Tam"): Go
about 0.6 miles on Hwy 1 to Tam Junction. Turn Left at
the light staying on Hwy 1. Continue 0.7 miles. Turn
Left onto Northern Avenue. Go 0.4 mi.. At the 'T'
intersection, turn left to continue on Northern. Go
about 100 yards and then turn Right onto Eastwood. Go
0.1 miles and turn Left on Glenwood. Eastwood Park is
on your left. There is a parking area about 50 yards
on the left.

There's a great little park, one door in/out on the
embarcadero. Perfect for the young crowd, very few
older kids, not too much to get hurt on, small enough
for one adult to care for multiples. I don't know the
name of it, but as you travel west on King, you go past
the ballpark and there is a left-hand curve-right at
that curve is the park on the right, it's set back just
a little. You can park at meters across the street or
look for the free parking spots in the lot where
Townsend intersects Embarcadero (there is a little
restaurant there, Java house? which is just past the
park-there is also a dog park just south of the park.)
We had lots of play dates there, small sand area too.
Enjoy!

I still haven't figured it out either! I have 19 month
olds and playgrounds are hard for me. Cow Hollw
Playground on Baker is manageable and indoor play
spaces like the village well or the simply fun class at
the Moscone Rec Center seem to work for me. Thanks
everyone for the ideas!

Hi, I am in the thick of that situation right now. My
little ones are only 13 months but they are walking
everywhere and in opposite directions. I second the
idea of migrating to enclosed playgrounds. I find
myself going to precita park and the bernal heights
library park a lot. A few things about that: 1.)
It's enclosed and so I feel safe letting them roam
around. Yep, there are opportunities for them to be
knocked over by older kids or walk into swinging kids
because I can't be in two places - but in my opinion,
that's all part of playing at a park. THere will be
bumps and bruises. 2.) The nice thing about
frequenting the same parks around the same time is that
the same people tend to be there. As a result, I find
that I know a lot of the kids and their nannys or
parents. We all sort of keep an eye out for each
others kids which alleviates some of the running
around. The other thing that I have found to be
incredibly enjoyable is the park district tot class.
Its basically an open gym - with tons of toddler
appropriate ridings toys and climbing toys and balls
and sand tables, etc.... The thing is that its pretty
cheap and its enclosed and again....its the same people
every week and we all watch out for each others kids.
One other thing - the children's park at GG Park is
lovely, of course, but so big for the little guys. If
you find yourself in GG Park with the kids, try out the
park at Mothers Meadow. While its not enclosed, its
small and almost never crowded.

The Presidio Hts Playground on Clay is also lovely &
manageable... and both of the main play areas are
REALLY far from the street, should anyone wander. They
have an enclosed area for the really little ones, and a
well-designed area for older kids. Walter Haas Park in
Noe Valley is also pretty good that way, in that it's
enclosed, far from street, and there's stuff right near
the sand area so that maybe you can station yourself
right in the middle as needed.Lastly, Glen Park has a
small, somewhat tired little play area (but that's not
something that little ones seem to notice!) but it's
small enough that it's pretty easily monitored. Only
prob I've found there is that it's not good on really
hot days, cause there are lots of metal parts (slides,
etc.) that get REALLY uncomfortably hot.) But that's
fairly close to the Glen Park library, too. That one
is best to stroller to, if your little ones want to run
different directions right out of the car. 1 entrance
only.

My boys just turned one too and I've dropped the
pumping in the middle of day (nice to not have to lug
all that stuff to work now). And I'm only feeding them
in the mornings and at nights. I agree, it's nice to
have that time with them, especially in the mornings if
they get up early and I can feed them while laying in
bed. Good luck with the transition - it took a while to
get used to not pumping in the days and it was not the
most comfortable, but after a couple of days, it's been
OK.

Our favorite island is the Big Island on the Kona side.
Weather is generally better than most of the other
islands since it's the dry side. Our favorite place to
stay with our kids is Kolea Villas. It's beautiful,
nestled in between the Marriott and the gigantic Hilton
and it's oceanfront so you have beach access (5-10
minute walk). They also have 2 pools, one is a very
shallow kiddie pool. We generally stay on the ground
floor so the boys can play right outside the condo.
The accommodations are beautiful and the kitchens are
all equipped with high end appliances.

I have been very anxious to read any responses to your
posts. Our twins will be 3 in 9 days, and they are
still in their cribs. We are contemplating the big
transition to beds in the next weeks/ months and have
been putting it off. Unfortunately, I don't have any
good advise to offer, other than to say that I have
been told that the transition from cribs to a bed of
any kind takes a couple of weeks. I'd love to hear from
others how they managed the transition, and if the bed
time routine does eventually return to
normal.ThanksBetsy

Ditto! My guys will be 3 on March 11th and are also
still in their cribs. We're planning ahead but I'd love
to hear other ideas for dealing with two free range
babies.I recently purchased a tot clock but haven't
introduced it yet. I'm hoping to get them trained to it
before converting to the toddler bed.The other thing
we've been talking about is getting them special sheets
for their toddler beds. They are currently obsessed
with the movie Cars and I've found a couple of toddler
bed sheet sets online. I'm thinking this will be a
great way to make the toddler beds more fun and special
to sleep in.I'll probably install a simple hook latch
on the outside of their room, too. This works really
well with their big brother. He occasionally hops out
of bed to test the door and then heads right back to
bed when he realizes he's trapped. It's fast and easy
to unlatch in an emergency and can even be unlatched
from the inside by an adult. We're not in any hurry to
transition them, but I want to be prepared and do what
we can to make it go as smoothly as possible.

I have 15 month mono-di girls. Delivered at 28 weeks
to the day. (weighing 1 lb 6 oz & 2 lb 7 oz) We
originally were at St Lukes seeing Dr Norrell. I had
wanted as natural of a childbirth experience as
possible. At 12 weeks we knew their was a size
discordance (30%). At 18 weeks, was sent to Dr. Otto at
CPMC who thought it was TTYS. was then sent to the
Fetal Treatment Center at UCSF. Diagnosis-- unequal
placental sharing-- pretty extreme case. Baby A had a
very small cord attached at the very edge, eventually
leading to IUGR. Was very closely monitored, bed rest,
etc. At 27 weeks admitted for thinning cervix.
Thankfully given steroids, etc. Unfortunately it was
preterm labor. Emergency c-section (after I had gone
from 3-8 cm in 1 hour!) We made it to 28 weeks. (I
was hoping for 34!) spent 10 weeks in the NICU. Now
both my miracles are doing so well!!! Congratulations
on making it to 29 weeks!!! I know its sounds scary,
but babies do well nowadays at that gestation. Listen
to your intuition. I agree Dr. Robertson is awesome--
she delivered my babies and is pro vaginal delivery if
possible. They actually gave me that option.. there
are studies that show preemie babies born vaginally do
better because it pushes the fluid out of their lungs
(unlike a c-section). In my case it happened so quick
and baby A was breech, had a ruptured cord, and low
heart rate, that an emergency c-section was what
needed to happen. I also liked Dr. Parer at UCSF-- he
is OLD and old school and has seen it all. Early on
encouraging me to make it to 38 weeks and deliver
vaginally! It was nice to hear considering all the
scaring things many doctors tell you with mono-di twins
and the scheduling of c-sections, etc. Do what your
gut tells you and get a 2nd opinion if you don't like
what your dr is telling you. Good luck! Kristin

If you have a boy/ boys, do NOT buy a training potty
with a foam insert in the chair. We had one of these,
and here's what will happen. When peeing, you son will
sometimes hit the foam insert. The foam insert will
absorb the pee like a sponge. Afetr awhie, you'll
notice that you bathroom reeks and you'll furiously
clean every inch of it. It will turn out that the foam
insert to the potty is full of urine and you will
immediatly throw the whole thing away.I can't find the
exact potty we had and threw away (I think it was
Safety First), but this potty looks like it has a
similar insert - it's gray in this
