I read your post to my husband last night and he asked
if I wrote it myself. Our situations are similar, but
I am not sure if I can be of help - only to tell you
what I am trying right now. So, our twins are 17
months old as of this week. We also transitioned to a
new nanny last week so this may have had an impact on
our particular situation. For the last several weeks,
their naps have been come inconsistent as you describe.
Especially in the afternoon nap, one will stay up
playing while the other sleeps, then the one who was
awake finally falls asleep and they wake each other up.
It has gotten to the point where I know they are not
napping enough. Then they started to skip naps all
together, either morning or afternoon, nearly every
day. I wondered if they were ready for one nap. So,
last Sunday when they skipped their first nap, I moved
their lunch up to 12:00 and then put them for a nap at
1:00. I do think that there is an in-between period
where one nap is not enough and two is too much. We
are in that phase. So, the one nap worked for one of
my girls. She napped from 1:00 until 3:45! However,
the other girl barely could keep her eyes open during
lunch at 12:00 and when she went for her nap she only
napped until 2:30 which wasn't enough time for her. We
tried the one nap for a few days, but they had trouble
staying awake until the 1:00 nap - even tried moving
lunch up but no success. They say that when you go to
one nap an the kids easily fall asleep in the car or
stroller before the first nap it is a sign that they
still need two. So, we are back to two naps. I moved
the naps to a later time. Instead of the morning and
afternoon naps at 9:15 and 2:00, I moved them to 10:30
and 3:00. So far, the best success I have had on this
schedule is a one hour nap at 10:30 and a half hour at
3:00. Still not enough sleep. Nothing seems to be
working. I think it just takes some patience on the
parents' part to keep trying to see what works and wait
until they are ready for the one nap. I have one who
seems to need more sleep than the other, but I know we
cannot function on two different nap schedules. Let me
know if you come across any good advice. And, good
luck!

This is what I did when our boy was ready for one nap
but the girl still needed two: I delayed their first
nap from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, and then we would go for
a long stroller walk in the afternoon (around 3:30-4
pm) to give them a chance to fall asleep. The girl
would sleep, the boy would or wouldn't depending on the
day. Then he didn't anymore, and after a few weeks she
stopped too. Then I started delaying the morning nap
progressively, following their cues. They now sleep at
12:30 pm, so we moved their lunch to before their nap.
Hope this helps you.

There is plenty of parking - the church has it's own
parking lot.
