3. When to start looking for nanny?
--------------------------------------------------------
jeccat - 4/26/2012 5:40 pm
Hello all-- my twins are due in July and I am planning
to go back to work in December. We have already
decided that we want to use a nanny because the cost
will be roughly equivalent to day care and day care
doesn't come to your house and get your kids dressed
:-). However, I have heard conflicting advice about
how early to start looking for a nanny-- two months
ahead? Three months ahead? Can SFPOM moms advise?
Also, on a separate note, my mom would like to come for
two days a week and spend time with the kids alongside
the nanny-- she's cared for my nephew two days/week
since he was born and she wants the same relationship
with my kids, but she is nervous about the demands of
two infants at once. Would most nannies be open to
this arrangement? We are not planning to pay any
differently for the days that my mom is here.

5. Need help tranisitioning from formula to food, please.

Can anyone recommend a good book or cookbook that
really dives into a practical approach to transitioning
from formula to food? Our girls are 9 months and have
tried out tons of foods and aren't picky eaters, but
I'm not sure how to make the full switchover in the
next few months, with emphasis on meeting all of their
dietary needs for body/brain development over the next
couple of years. Any advice is most welcome! Thanks
in advance! Best, Jen

Hi, I know a few families who have a FT nanny and an
au pair. The nanny is in charge and there during the
weekdays. The au pair is there to support the
nanny/parent and has flexible time to help the
parent(s) before/after the nanny arrives or leaves.
They used Cultural Care Au Pair (I think).Hope this
helps.

I agree that your nanny could use some help (I'm
assuming you are going back to work). I had a 4 year
old and a 2 year old when I gave birth to our twins. I
stayed at home with our part-time nanny. She would stay
with the twins in between my breastfeedings and during
naps while I ran hither and yon with preschool pick-ups
and later preschool and Kindergarten pickups. If you
can afford it, it is a huge sanity saver. Good naps
were a priority for me. It also comes down to safety.
If you're like me and want your kids running around
outside and having some free time, you need an extra
set of eyes and hands at the playground and crossing
streets. I don't think I could have trusted any single
person (myself included) to keep a watchful eye on
everyone. We had our part-time nanny for 2 years. I
think the idea of a main nanny and a less-experienced
person (ie: a college student) is the way to go. Let me
know if you have any questions. Good luck!

Hi--We had our third when our twins were 23 months. We
ended up keeping our full-time nanny and then hiring a
part-time (M-F 9-12) helper. One person stayed home
with the baby and did chores (dishes, laundry) and the
other took the twins out to play. This was because the
twins needed to be out and about and it was tough
juggling the baby and his attempt at a schedule. It can
be done-- every parent can do it once you get the hang
of it-- but it takes one heck of a caregiver to manage
three kids under 25 months and laundry and dishes are
not, under those circumstances, a reasonable ask. We
did this from 3-9 months, after I returned to work and
before the twins started preschool full-time at 3. It
was expensive (this is helpful preparation for having 3
kids in SF :) but I'm glad I did it; I think it was too
much to ask one person to handle everything and it gave
the kids flexibility in caregiver styles, having 2
separate people. Feel free to reach out to me with any
questions-- it was particularly crazy for the first 6
months but I love having my little tribe--Hilary

Not that you asked, but we like our Kia Sedona. We
could get a new one fully loaded for the price of a
used Sienna.

I have a 3.5 year old and 10 month old twins. My
experience has been that one person cannot take care of
all three- at least not well. It's ok for an hour or so
and then it's too much!
