1. Seeking advice on nanny overlap with maternity leave
--------------------------------------------------------
magtwo - 5/14/2012 11:51 pm
I delivered my twins by c-section 3wks ago and plan a 3
month maternity leave (until mid-July). The day of
their birth, a friend emailed that she would be parting
ways with her much-adored nanny on June 1 as her son
got off a pre-school waitlist. We feel lucky to be
hiring this wonderful nanny, but she will complete her
current job 6wks before I resume work. Our friends who
currently employ the nanny consider her to be part of
the family, and want to help ensure that there is no
gap in her employment. They have some leads on friends
who may need PT childcare help during the gap.
Meanwhile, I am trying (with my sleep-deprived brain)
to figure out what our needs will be… I imagine that
it might be nice to start the nanny FT at the beginning
of July, so that there will be a 2-wk transition
period, and also so that I can catch up on errands and
appointments before resuming FT work -- or is 2 weeks
too long? I am also wondering if I would benefit from
some PT help in June… Currently my entire life
revolves around cycles of BFing / supplemental bottles
/ pumping, and I have a night doula who helps with this
but am on my own in the daytime. In June (when babes
will be 6-10weeks) I imagine the days will look quite
different, but I don't know what to expect or what
kinds of help I might need then -- would it make sense
to start the nanny on a PT basis earlier, or will I
feel like I never got "my time" with the twins?
(Expense is certainly a factor, but we are committed to
working it out with the other couple so that the nanny
gets enough hours in June to pay her bills -- whether
with us or with some other family). Any advice or
insight would be appreciated!

2. Playgroup Jan-Jun 2013 is now open

Sandpiper - 5/14/2012 11:41 pm
Dear all,I just created a new subgroup for expectant
parents. Please feel free to join and start sharing
information and organizing play dates (or rather
meet-ups for parents till your babies are born). The
subgroups are created for your convenience - there is
no organizer to set up events unless someone steps up
to become one. Hope you find the subgroup useful for
connecting with other families! Let me know if you
encounter any technical problems with BigTent and I'll
do my best to fix them.Jenia.

6. Reminder: How Multiples Affect Marriage: 5 Steps to
Resolving Conflict and Preserving (or Restoring) Intimacy
--------------------------------------------------------
twinpeakstwins - 5/14/2012 5:11 pm
Multiples can place a huge amount of stress on
marriage. Most studies show that marital satisfaction
starts to plummet with the arrival of the first child.
With multiples it can plummet even more! Yet, there are
many things that couples can do to communicate
productively and to resolve conflict. In this workshop
we'll discuss the most effective strategies to maintain
or restore intimacy, communicate productively, and
strengthen your marriage. We'll talk about:* Common
gender differences around sex and intimacy* Best and
worst ways to resolve conflict* How to communicate in a
way that actually gets you what you want* Best ways to
resolve differences around parenting* How to know
what's normal conflict and when your marriage is in
trouble.Dr. Coleman is a psychologist in private

8. Convertible Car Seat Travel Covers to Borrow?
--------------------------------------------------------
skggmg - 5/14/2012 12:39 pm
We are about to embark on our first East Coast plane
trip with our 17 month old boys this coming weekend.
(Wish us luck!) We are planning to bring their
convertible car seats (Britax Boulevards) with us b/c
we have two different destinations on the other end and
will be driving a lot. Does anyone have two car seat
travel covers that we could borrow from this Thursday
night until Sunday, May 27? We used garbage bags when
we travelled last year with their infant seats but
prefer something more durable this time around, if
possible. I can pick up anywhere in SF tonight until
Thursday night.

Hi! I also lost weight my first week on GD diet...in
fact, I lost 4 lbs in 5 days! I think this is only bad
if you have ketones in your urine and you feel hungry
all the time. If neither is true, and you just aren't
gaining a ton of weight, then I wouldn't worry too
much. I WOULD, however, try to eat more during the
night, this was the only way I could gain weight at
that point. In the end I gained about 35 lbs total,
delivered at 36 weeks, baby A was 5lb 11oz and B was
6lb 2oz. That's a great size for that gestational age,
so I don't think you total weight gain exactly
correlates with the babies' size. Don't worry!

Your OBGYN/Perinatologist will be going by measurements
of the babies (to track their growth) and not as much
for weight when you have GD. Your babies will take/suck
all the nutrients they need from you first (hence
you'll see the weight loss). What the mom said earlier
is accurate - just make sure you eat when hungry and if
your hungry in the middle of the night then you're
either not eating enough for your bedtime snack (need
more protein), you ate something high carb and low
protein (ex. cereal), or your med regimen (if on one)
needs to be adjusted. It's normal to see a bit if a
drop while you learn how your body responds to certain
carbs. You can always sneak in more food or a higher
carb when you learn what time of day your metabolism is
the highest (usually in the afternoon). A big concern
from them is they want your sugars to not yoyo so you
don't "bottom out". The way you can get carbs in & not
yoyo is to take a few hours to finish something high
carb. An example: drink half a smoothies at one hr,
drink the other half an hour later. I'm sure you're
doing a great job :) Good Luck!

Thanks so much! Especially relieved to hear you can
gain only 35 lbs and STILL have babies close to 6
lbs... at this rate, I think I may only gain another
5-6 and I would *love* to have babies that size, that
is really big for twins! My guys are currently at the
upper end of the growth chart (75th & 67th %tile) and I
want them to stay there if possible. I think I took
the Barbara Luke book really literally, as I have been
scared about not gaining enough weight the whole
pregnancy.

Estelle-- we have already set up two classes, one on
5/16 (this Wednesday) and one on 6/10 (mid-day on a
Sunday). The fee is $100/couple. Since we have four
couples for Wednesday and only three for the Sunday
6/10 class, I might recommend you attend the latter
with Bayinaah, Susanna, and Tobee. Let me know which
date works and I'll send you the email chain with all
the info.
