Love Dr. Anne with Noe Valley Pediatrics! But, I would
recommend finding a good ped that is really close to
you. Those first few months involve a lot of doctors
appointments. Its nice to have your ped near you.

We love, love, love our doctors - Drs. Martel &
Herbsman at Child's Light Pediatrics. They don't have
an office, so they *always* come to you at home. It was
such a relief not to have to haul our infants to the
doctors when they were so small; I felt overwhelmed
enough without having to coordinate feedings and naps
and car seats and stuff around a doctor's appointment.
In the early days you do see them quite a lot, even if
your children are 100% healthy. I also appreciated
never having to drag them to a dr's office where other
kids were sick with colds and flu. Besides the house
calls, they're also available 24/7 -- not a nurse or a
service, but one of the two doctors always answers
their cell phone. They respond to emails and texts
quickly as well, and if your child has to go into the
hospital, even just the ER, they go with you. One of
our girls was hospitalized for 24 hours earlier this
year, and in that short amount of time we saw our own
doctors -- in the ER and in the permanent room we moved
to -- no fewer than 5x. They held our hands every step
of the way and coordinated her care with the CPMC staff
doctors minute by minute. Besides the excellent level
of service, they are both incredible human beings and
doctors. They LOVE kids and it shows. They are so good
with the little ones, so knowledgeable, and
open-minded. On a day when our baby had a head
ultrasound, the results of which could have meant
things as terrifying as a brain tumor, the doctor
called us within 30 minutes of the procedure even
though he was in the hospital with his own child that
day. That really moved me and impressed me; we were
literally scared out of our wits, and he took the time
to put our minds at ease. I can't recommend them
enough.

I take my twins to Dr. Kelly at Pacific Peds. His
whole staff and all the other doctors in his practice
are fantastic!

We just switched to Kaiser but saw Kara Wright at UC mt
Zion. She was amazing and we had a lot of issues in the
beginning. I was very thankful to be in the UC system.

Thanks everyone - we have some research to do on these
doc's now! This is great!! Cat - do you find house
doctors to be expensive? I don't know how much our
insurance will cover. Also, what if they needed to do
an immediate test, they wouldn't have the equipment
needed right away. Were you afraid of
that?Thanks!Bhavna

Hi,Awhile back I compiled several Q&S's from the group
on traveling into a google doc. I will send it to you.
Most important pieces: send a diapers.com order to
your destination, if you intend to be there for a long
period of time, bring your car seats but not the bases.
if flying american they have a new rule - no gate
checking strollers over 20lbs....which is nearly
impossible. So, either keep them in a snap & go OR buy
two cheap umbrella strollers and the stroller
connectors OR have one of you steer clear of the
ticketing/baggage agent. Getting through security: one
of you is strictly the baby holder and one of you does
literally everything else (breaks down
stroller,etc...). If they sleep well in the ergo
carriers, keep those handy for the long plane ride.
Oh, one last important thing: You and your partner
wont be allowed to share a row unless you purchased 3
tickets. If you didnt purchase 3 tickets, I would
recommend having your diaper bag organized by kid.
Basically what I did was place two gallon baggies in
the diaper bag. One for each child containing: bottle,
two pacis, paci strap, a snack, a bib, a diaper &
wipes). The essentials basically in the bag - so you
can separate at take-off and reconvene for toys,
etc...later. Good luck! **I'll email you the google
doc, too.

HI Maggie. First of all, congratulations! I have
some experience with this. My girls are now 18 month,
but I hired a nanny when they were 3 months old and
went back to work when they were 4 months. For the
first month, I had our nanny on a slightly reduced
schedule, I think from 8-4. Then when I went back to
work, she comes 7-5. I thought the one month overlap
was helfpul for two reasons. 1 - I got to know our
nanny so very well that I had absolutly no worried when
I went back to work. She was really a part of our
family by then after having spent so much time. 2.
she taught us so much about caring for two at once as
she came with twin experience. This was invaluable.
If you can find a way to afford having as much of an
overlap as possible, even if you do a reduced scheule
while you are still at home, I greatly recommend it.
Two weeks as you suggest is not too long in my opinion.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Got some answers at GGMG: They said ask lots of
questions about philosophy if you have one about
medical care (e.g. if you plan to also have a
naturopath, find a pediatrician who is open to natural
care, delaying medication, etc.), what is the ped's
attitude toward vaccination (we wanted a VERY
pro-vaccination pediatrician because we didn't want our
kids to pick up whooping cough from unvaccinated kids
in the waiting room), and access access access-- do
they respond to emails and phone calls? Can you get
same-day appointments? What urgent care facility do
they recommend? We also wanted to know if he had
experience with preemies just in case our guys came
early. We SHOULD have asked if he's supportive of
vegetarian diets because we plan to raise our kids
(mostly) vegetarian, but I forgot. We ended up going
with the first guy we met-- Dave Buchholz-- he's up in
Laurel Heights but is affiliated with UCSF. Funny,
great bedside manner, seemed accessible (email, phone
calls, same-day appointments), LOTS of experience, male
(we are having two boys), told us that talking new
parents off the ledge is "50% of his job" and he seemed
comfortable with it, very pro-vaccination. If that
sounds up your alley I recommend you check him out.
