1. Yerba Buena Playground area - info needed

nataliasha2004 - 6/14/2012 5:15 pm
From time to time, my girls and I go play at the YB
playground, up top there, by the Carousel and
Children's Creativity Museum (fka "Zeum"). Once when
we were there, there was a guy demonstrating worm boxes
(those stacked bins containing dirt & wriggling worms.)
After some initial skepticism, we all really enjoyed
it and even fed & touched them! Anyway - the docent
guy was great, and told me he does those a couple times
a week, and also offers story readings (all free.)
I've been trying to find out WHEN, exactly, and can't
find anything online or anyone in the YB complex who
can help, or even knows what I'm talking about! Does
this ring any bells?? Does anyone know about this
program, or have any info? We'd love to catch it
again, but never seem to turn up at the right time. I
THINK it was sometime around 11, and probably on a
Tuesday, but am not 100% sure. Any info anyone's got
would be much appreciated! It's a fun place to play,
regardless, and of course, there's a CAROUSEL! $3/2
rides (tho they won't let you split those - so it's a
minimum of $6 for twins.)

meganrc - 6/14/2012 11:18 am
Hi! I am 20 weeks pregnant with twin boys, and my
toddler is about 26 months. We have a nanny watch him
24 hours a week so I can study (in school part time).
I'm planning on taking off 10 months, and have no idea
how much help we'll need. I'm hoping to get my toddler
into day care for a year starting in the fall (he's not
eligible for most preschools until January and I'm due
Nov.), but I'll still want the nanny to stay for sure.
I guess my question is how do you make that all work? a
2.5 year old in day care and twins at home with mom and
nanny?thank you!Megan

Hi Megan,That should be plenty of help. I have a
toddler in daycare during the week, and a mother's
helper 2 or 3 days a week with me and my girls, who are
now 10 weeks. My husband is also home for a couple
more weeks, and he helps by watching the babies so I
can spend time with my son in the morning and at dinner
time. We found this was critical so he gets some
quality mommy time. Weekends are the craziest, with
everyone home, so you might think about scheduling some
nanny hours on the weekend if possible. Another thing
to think about is that as you get later in your
pregnancy (~30+ weeks) you will be more tired and less
able to run around after a toddler, so you may want to
up your nanny hours then. Good luck!

I brought my kids to a friend's house one time and she
served up apples, peeled and sliced paper thin - almost
like little quarters or half dollars. Very easy to eat
for the little ones. Our kids had an awesome habit of
eating apples really early then spitting the entire
contents out. This went on for about a year. They'd
eat and swallow plenty of similar textured and more
difficult foods but got into this apple spitting habit
that wouldn't die. I probably wouldn't worry much if
they don't eat apples. Maybe try pears? They'are a bit
softer.

Ours started out the same way, and love whole apples
now (in fact, then get all incensed if we dare to halve
them, say...)I seem to recall the skins being a bit of
an issue for ours early on -- & the red apples tend to
have thicker skins, but yellow and some other kinds (w/
the thinner skins - Braeburns? Gala??) worked better.
Slicing thin is key, and we also did peanut or almond
butter on or between slices... or sneaking them onto
nut-butter or cheese sandwiches. Also - if you're
really committed - making flat slices, as big as you
can, and then stamping with a cookie cutter??
Sometimes the novelty shapes seem to help overcome
those sorts of issues, at least temporarily...Good
luck!

- Eureka Rec Center (indoor room), there's also an
outdoor enclosed playground. - Noe Valley Rec Center
(indoor, but they dont open everyday I think)- Bay area
discovery museum (Sausalito, their tots room is a lot
of fun but it's hard to go there without getting wet in
the water structure outside there, so bring change)It
will get better and being alone with them at a
playground will not be so stressful. You are at the
most difficult stage now in terms of outside play and
making sure they don't hurt themselves.

We have no outdoor space with our apartment either... I
spent a lot of time at the playground in the Panhandle
of GG Park in this time frame - small, good visibility
good things to play on for kids that age, and
completely enclosed. Also the toddler play room at the
Academy of sciences got a lot of use from us, the kids
really love it.

As a parent of two fast runners, and gate runners at
that (learned how to open the gate and run right into
the road around the same age "Look! mom will chase me
even faster if I run out of the gate!"), I would like
to suggest:1) Holly Park in Bernal Heights. It has a
fenced playground and a fenced in baseball diamond for
running like crazy. If your kids even get out of the
gate, they still have a long way to go to get to the
road, so they'll be pretty safe.2) Alta Plaza Park in
Pac Heights. Great playground, fenced all around, and
also a long distance from the road.3) Upper Noe Rec
Ctr. Small fenced playground - makes it easier to keep
up with the two different directions, AND their gates
are more toddler proof because the handles are on the
outside so harder for kids to actually get out. They
also have a tot room in the gym that has all sorts of
things to climb and play on that seems open to the
public pretty often.4) Play space at Randall Museum.
The rest of the museum is pretty open and can be hard
to chase them around, but they have a little room with
toys and a tree house that's great for little ones.
Only one exit from that room which is easily patrolled.

The park in Noe Valley at 24th and Douglass is perfect
for kids that age. It is small and fenced in with good
visibility and it is really geared towards kids 3 and
younger.

There's also a small play area on the Embarcadero, near
the ballpark (just west of it) that's small and
enclosed.There's a lovely little waterpark (well - a
teeny park with a fun water feature) on 24th in the
Mission, near... maybe Bryant? It's only got the one
entrance and you can hang out toward the back of the
space. As noted above, Holly Park is great - especially
if your kids just want to run around in the baseball
field.Parque Ninos Unidos (23rd/Folsom) has pretty good
zones/visibility, and a little green area to run around
in. 2 gates, far from each other, and people are
usually pretty good about closing those. Indoor space
there as well.Garfield Park (25th/Harrison)is pretty
good, only there are 3 gates to monitor.Walter Haas
Playground in Noe Valley is nice, too -- only 2 gates,
large & varied play area but good visibility -- and
pretty removed from the street.Lastly, we love the
Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park. Free to SF
residents, no vehicles, no dogs, lots of paved paths
for strollers/wagons, unpaved trails for exploring,
squirrels, great picnicking (away from that main meadow
-- too many geese there -- and your kids can really run
around without you having to worry about cars. It's
really peaceful and lovely - tho you might have to talk
about not picking flowers or otherwise molesting the
plants before you go... but once you get to know the
different areas, you'll know what works. The garden of
scents is really cool - you are allowed to touch those
plants. The GGMG website has a nice listing of SF parks
and what features each has, altho it's a few years old,
and many parks have been improved upon. Here's a link:
http://www.ggmg.org/Playgrounds/playground_summary.htmlOff
on a slight tangent, I'm thinking we (SFPOM) need to
petition Parks & Rec to hang some add'l signs at all
park gates, reminding users to close them... so often
parents of singletons waltz right in, leaving them open
-- leaving us POMs to go running around closing them so
our little ones don't escape! One of my pet peeves.

I forgot the Presidio Hts. Playground (Clay btw Walnut
& Laurel)! That one also features nice play areas FAR
from the one entrance gate. It was a godsend to me
when mine were at the age that they had to dart in
different directions. Plus, it's just really pleasant
to hang out it -- the sand area is enclosed separately,
and the area around that has that fake grass that's
like an outdoor carpet... : D

This is a fabulous, important session, especially for
new parents -- very empowering and specific and
helpful. We kept our notes & handouts, and still refer
to them whenever needed. I remember she also gave us a
list of things to buy now have on hand, and that's been
really helpful for those middle-of-the-night weird
episodes where the LAST thing you want to do is be
running to a Walgreen's across town... attend this if
you can! You'll be glad you did!

Thanks so much for all your responses. Yes, the
mattress is lowered all the way, and the boys climb the
slats of the side of the crib, so a thinner mattress
won't contain them. The crib tent was indeed recalled
due to one death and another serious injury, sadly.
Meanwhile, tonight it finally happened: one of my boys
fell out of his crib. Thankfully, he appears
unharmed--just a little surprised. We put blankets
below just in case they forget how unpleasant it was to
fall ans do it again (having a daughter, too, I can say
that selective forgetfulness is more pronounced in
boys).I think we're going to try toddler beds. Let's
hope they stay in them!
