4. Cat Napping
--------------------------------------------------------
ccranes - 6/19/2012 10:22 pm
Our 10 month old preemie twins will only take 15-30
minute naps three times a day. I have heard that a lot
of kids will sleep 1-2 hours in the morning and again
in the afternoon. We have kept them up past their
regular nap time but that doesn't seem to work either.
Any thoughts on how to get them to take a real nap?
Know of a Nap Whisperer or good book?

My girls LOVE the Step 2 push around buggy. They don't
make a two seater. Anyone know of something similar
that would allow both girls to get pushed around at the
same time? I would love to be able to strap them in and
go for a short walk - much more fun than a stroller.

10. 6-7 month old schedule
--------------------------------------------------------
mamapod - 6/19/2012 11:00 am
Does anyone have any suggestions on a 6-7 month old
napping and feeding schedule? I had them on a pretty
good schedule, but my pediatrician says I need to start
transitioning them into 2 or three naps instead of 4.
We have also just introduced solids, so not sure when
to give it to them...how soon after their bottle feed?
I have been trying to feed them solids a couple times a
day about 1.5 hours after their bottles. Now that the
wake time is longer, they are exhausted. We are no
longer doing the EASY method which I found helpful
because now they sometimes wake from their nap sooner
than their feed time. Here is what the last couple of
days have looked like.6 wake and feed7 play with
husband7:30 rice cereal9:00 bf and bottle 9:30 nap (by
this time they are over tired and it is difficult to
get one of them down for a nap)not sure yet how long
they nap so far it has been different every day, but in
theory this should be their long nap of the day.12:00
bf and bottle1:30 rice cereal2:00 nap hopefully!3:00
wake and bf and bottle4:30 nap hopefully (most
difficult nap of the day)5:30 bf and bottlewind down
with bath/stories and bed by 6:15not usually asleep
till 7:00Should I also do a solid food at dinner
time? Now that I am keeping them up longer, they are
getting hungrier sooner... I had them feeding about
every 3 hours and now they are getting hungry every 2.5
hours.I would appreciate any suggestions here. What
are your schedules and what has worked for you at this
age?Thanks a bunch!

food4:00 nap5:30-6ish bottle and food, asleep by 7:30

up too much of our day and interrupted their napping.
It does take us at least 30-45 minutes to get them to
take the entire bottle. They drink about 1/2 - 3/4 of
the bottle and then need a burp before they can finish
the bottle. We now feed 8oz bottles with each feed and
give them snacks here and there.Hope this helps

with singleton pregnancies. However, was wondering if
anyone recommends or has had any great experiences with
any particular OB at Kaiser SF during a twin pregnancy.
If you have a good recommendation, and could let me

13. TV "watching"
--------------------------------------------------------
amywink - 6/19/2012 10:17 am
I have 9 week old g/g twins, and am staying home with
them all summer. I spend most of our time in the
living room, and during the day I have music playing
during their awake times, usually on the computer or
iPad, but also sometimes on the TV music channels ( the
screen is lit, and random facts about the music are on,
but no active video). When my husband comes home, or
on the weekends when he's home, he likes to have the tv
on. He is one of those people who just likes it on,
but he is often watching ESPN or a sports event. I
know kids aren't supposed to watch tv until they are
two years old, but what about when they are so young
they aren't actually "watching" it? The babies do look
up at the tv sometimes, the bright lights catch their
eye and they want to stare at it. I just move them
when this is happening. He knows that eventually TV
watching will be very curbed, and that the girls aren't
supposed to watch when they are young. But when do I
start making him turn it off if the girls are around?

14. breastfeeding issue - pls share your experience
--------------------------------------------------------
aryf123 - 6/19/2012 7:17 am
I have 4-week-old twins and still am wondering on how
to proceed with nursing as total confusion has overcome
me.Our twins were born at 36 weeks and had to be fed
formula at the hospital. At the same time I started
pumping and once my milk came in, gave them the bottle
with breastmilk, but also supplemented. They were too
weak to go directly to the breast at the beginning. In
the meantime they both know how to breastfeed in
"theory", but there is still a lot of confusion. For the
past 11 days, after we had a lactation consultant come
to our house, the process now looks like this: I give
one of them the bottle, pumped milk, and the other one,
half of the bottle and then try to latch this baby on.
At the next feeding session I offer the breast to the
baby who had only had the bottle. After this, I pump
for 15 minutes while burping them - which is kind of
complicated to do simultaniously. This process involves
a lot of patience, contains numerous steps and takes
around 60 minutes plus (cleaning of bottles and pumping
equipment excluded). Surprisingly, the weaker baby
latches on a lot better than the stronger one. With
her, there is lot of fussing going on. Also, very
often, one of them is hungry after roughly an hour to
an hour and a half: I understand that this could be due
to a growth spurt, cluster feeding but/ or the simple
fact that they did not get enough milk at the breast.
Not only does this then change the schedule, but it
also leaves me completely confused on whether I am
doing things right, wrong, try hard enough etc.I would
love to make a decision on how to proceed. As this is
my first time nursing, I am looking for any advice/
experience to help me get a better understanding of
this situation. Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on your twins. I remember how
incredibly hard it was in the beginning. You will get
through it day by day - keep your head up. All I can
offer is my own personal experience. Like you, I had
my twin girls (who arre about 20 months old now) at 36
weeks. Baby B was only 3lbs. 11oz. at birth and was in
the NICU for 11 days. Baby A was 5 lbs. 2 oz. and was
able to come home with us. I started pumping right
away and that helped my milk supply (rented a hospital
grade pump - highly recommend this). Neither girl
latched very well likely because they were preemie. I
went to a lactation contultant so that I could improve
(I also had a yeast infection in my nipple which did
not help). So, in the beginning I would breast feed
each baby individually for 20-30 minutes. Then I would
hand the babies off to one of my parents (who were
helping for the first few months) and they would
supplement with a bottle of breast milk or formula,
then I would pump. As soon as I was done, I would have
to repeat the process. I was never able to BF them at
the same time as I needed both hands for each baby.
And, at night, I would only bottle feed and pump so
that someone else (if you have help) can help with the
bottle feeding and you can get some rest. I still
always pumped every 3 hours even at night. After two
months of this, and many visits to the lactation
consultant, the girls still were not latching and
feeding well. As I BF then individually, I would have
to stroke their head with one hand and express millk
from my breast with the other, it was just that
difficult to keep them going. The lactation consultant
can tell you how much they are consuming by weighing
them before and after the feed especially if they are
hungry only 1.5 hours later and you suspect they might
not be having enough. My girls would only consume 1/2
an once in 30 mintues according to the lacation
consultant. I even borrowed a scale to keep at home
and their stats were never muc better with this. I
just couldn't keep it up. So, after 2 months and
nearly losing my mind completely, I chose to pump
exclusively. I did this for 7 months. From 3 months
on, we gave them half breast milk half formula. And, I
was pumping at my maximum, 50 oz. a day. My girls had
the breast milk for 8.5 months which I think is pretty
good for twins.Never question if you are trying hard
enough. I am sure you are. In the beginning, I felt
guilty not BF them at night and only pumping. Then I
realized that if I get a few hours of rest at night, I
had more milk for them. And, nothing you do is wrong.
You just have to figure out what is best for everyone
as a whole. While I would have loved to BF them
directly for a full year, it didn't happen for me.
But, this is not the only way to provide milk and bond
with your babies.Good luck and please let me know if
you have any specific qutions.

Have you tried tandem nursing? It sounds like it takes
a really long time to bottle feed one baby and then put
the other to the breast and pump. I think feeding mine
at the same time was the only thing that kept me sane
because they were always on the same schedule. It still
took a VERY long time (my babies were full term and I
think at 4 weeks it was still a good 45-50 minutes per
feeding session), but it was slightly more relaxing
with them both doing the same thing at the same time.
Also, they got really full feedings and we were always
able to go 2.5-3 hours between feedings. At first it's
hard to set up and is much easier with a helper, but if
you can, you should give it a try. It's especially nice
if you have a helper for burping until they get a bit
bigger.I tandem fed at just about every feeding (my
husband did one bottle per baby at evening feedings),
and then pumped after every feeding for the first
month, then after about half, then just once or twice a
day. I also felt like tandem nursing, and stimulating
both nipples at once, helped my milk supply, but maybe
that's just because I so rarely nursed just one that
when I did it felt weird. It sounds like you are doing a
lot more pumping than nursing, which can be frustrating
and is often less efficient in terms of getting milk
out. Another thing you could try if you are still
having latching issues is a nipple shield -- some
lactation consultants are totally against them because
they say it is a crutch, but if it helps for a short
time, I don't see the problem. I know lots of people
who used them, and I've never heard of anyone who
couldn't get the baby to latch straight to the nipple
after at most a few weeks. This could be the key for
you to get them both to latch so you can feed them at
the same time. I also thought the Medela supplemental
nursing system was a godsend at the very beginning.
It's a little bottle that hooks to your bra and has a
tiny tube coming out that you tape to your nipple. It's
a way to deliver more milk to the baby than they are
getting out of the breast, but still have them sucking
to stimulate milk production. If you feel they aren't
getting enough from just nursing, but you have pumped
milk available (or if you still need to give a bit of
formula), this could be a good option for you. As your
babies get a little bigger and stronger, they should
get the hang of it. Good luck! And congrats on your
babies.
