1. Going Rate for Mother's Helper

sfmama911 - 6/29/2012 2:06 pm
My husband just started a new job which will now have
him coming home around 8pm each night. In order to get
some assistance with our three kids (4yo and 2 mo
twins) from 6pm-8pm when I return from work, I wanted
to hire a mother's helper or ask our nanny to stay
longer at a reduced rate (since I am home as well).
What is the going rate for a mother's helper?

I'm jumping on the outgoing bandwagon, but leaving
behind a pretty exciting opportunity - the NEW
newsletter editor will get to oversee the transition of
the print version of Multiplicity to a much more
dynamic, flexible online version (hopefully moving
BEYOND BigTent!) I will be available to work with my
replacement, and that person will step into the job
supported by a terrific team of regular and revolving
contributors (e.g., the copy editor, layout designer,
ads coordinator, birth announcements collector, recipe
contributor, et al.) Outside of the Editor's Message,
it's more about overseeing the administrative stuff -
additional writing (though welcome) is totally
optional. Please contact me via editor@sfpom.org for
more details.P.S. The July/August issue of
Multiplicity will be out early next week -- please look
for it in your mailboxes (w/ link to it here.) We
always appreciate reader feedback!

So my boys are 16 months old now. They are really bad
about eating anything not completely pureed and yet
they have a ton of teeth. They still don't eat whole
fruit or veges (i.e. no cut up blueberries, grapes,
strawberries, broccoli, watermelon). I used to make
all their baby food but as work has heated up, I am
buying monthly subscriptions to Fresh Baby Bites which
by and large my boys eat.In terms of non-pureed foods,
one will eat eggs (scrambled or hardboiled) and slices
of turkey and chicken. He will also eat pieces of
plain bread. The other one likes PB&J sandwiches and
pastries (awesome).I thought maybe the nanny was not
introducing them to new foods bcs she is a vegetarian
so I suggested if she wanted to cook some tofu or
cooked veges and introduce them to that it would be
fine. But she said she does not like to "cook or
prepare" foods bcs she hates cleaning up! (Which is
true, all the dishes including the nice knives and
cutting boards are thrown in the dishwasher without
even a rinse). She usually leaves the bibs with dried
food bits all over. She says she usually eats just
yoghurt or microwavable food at home.So besides fresh
baby bite purees, she feeds them the pouches from Plum
Organics (like 6 a day!), and she makes PB&J for the
one and sliced bread for the other. She won't make the
one eggs or experiment with veges. Note my babes are
in the 0-5% for weight--they are admittedly little also
bcs hubby and I are little and they were premature and
they don't seem overly hungry or look starved, I would
just like to see them eating different, more solid
foods. So wise mamas: What "pre-prepared" foods would
you suggest that require little to no work? Any canned
soup recs? We do beans occasionally. Note that the
nanny has MANY admirable qualities that I love but I am
bit pissed by this, I have to admit...

Ladies, I work for Williams-Sonoma. I LOVE cooking ang
Eating! When I was making these guys their purees, I
was throwing in all kinds of spices veges, grains, you
name it so I would not have picky eaters. I feel all of
that work is completely undone. Hence the vent...On
the positive side, she is there for 11-12 hours a day
regularly and she does not complain at all when I am 1+
hours late. It has given me huge freedom in terms of
my career so I am so grateful plus my kids LOVE her.
So that is why I am so conflicted!

Can you pre-make foods that she heats up? My kids eat
cold cheese omelettes, or reheated french toast. Or,
could you encourage smoothies made with fruits,
kale/spinach, yogurt so that they're getting fresh
healthy foods? Savory baked tofu (in the tofu section
of grocery store) is great cubed for kids, and easy for
her to serve. Spinach nuggets (near the tofu section,
in the vegetarian section) are easy to fry up in a pan
and all-natural. Toaster waffles can be healthy with a
hummus spread on them. I - like you - worked very hard
(in tandem with the nanny) to introduce them to lots of
food so they wouldn't be picky. Now the kids are 2.5
and they are fantastic eaters. I have to say, I would
not be able to put up with a nanny that wouldn't cook
and clean up after themselves. That's a deal breaker
for me. We pay these nannies a lot of money, and they
should not be creating work for us. Good luck with
this one!

Hi Caroline! We just did this trip with 10mo twins,
but also traveled to the East coast when they were 6mo.
Will you need to bring a stroller on your trip, or will
you have one there? If you will have one there, then I
would do slings to get through the aiport; if you need
to bring one, then I would use slings to get through
security, then transfer them to the stroller to save
your backs. They have always let us walk through the
detector with the baby in the slings. It is true, you
and your husband will have to sit across the aisle from
each other if you are not buying an extra seat (we have
never bought an extra) because there is only one extra
oxygen mask per section of row. MAKE SURE you book
seats across the aisle, because the airline will not do
it for you and will make you move if you are seated
beside each other! Also, in my experience the
bassinets are really small and almost useless, but at
6mo they might work for you-- they are basically flimsy
boxes the kids can sleep in, but only if the fasten
seat belt sign is OFF (you have to pick up the baby if
there is any turbulence!). And if you want a bassinet,
you will have to be sitting in specific bulkhead seats,
so check the airline website to find out which seats
these are, and if you can, book them. I definitely
recommend a wall mounted bassinet over a floor
bassinet, but in a lot of planes this would require you
to sit many rows from you husband if you both wanted to
have one. A good solution might be to ask for ONE wall
mounted bassinet, and then sit across the aisle from
each other and "share" holding the other baby. If you
don't use the bassinet (we didn't because our babies
were too big for them! They are tiny!!), then you will
just have to hold the babies the whole flight. This is
difficult, but if you wear your sling it makes it
easier. There is no way around this. Bring snacks
that you can access and eat with one hand because it is
really hard to eat from the tray if you baby is awake
and grabbing the food! Regarding airlines, we flew
United to the UK and the bassinets sucked, but the crew
were extremely helpful and nice. My friend flew
British Airways and their bassinets were amazing, her
son slept the whole flight in it, but you would have to
sit separately from your hubby if you choose that
route. Your call (I vote for being near hubs,
personally). Finally, don't stress about whether the
babies sleep or not during the flight. They will do
what they want to do, there is nothing you can do to
control it. And it will take a few days for them to
adjust to the time change (and might require a couple
night feedings the first night or two) but they will
adjust just fine! Good luck and let me know if you
have more questions! Caroline

We flew to the UK as well when our boys were 6 months
old. We got the bulkhead seats with bassinets and that
was very helpful. We used strollers, just the cheap,
small ones and had connectors to attach them to each
other, which was super helpful, as they collapsed
quickly and were easy to put thru security. Here is
link to
connectors:http://www.amazon.com/Prince-Lionheart-6550-Stroller-Connectors/dp/B000056J23/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1341006606&sr=1-1&keywords=prince+lionheart+stroller+connectorRe
sleeping on plane, that didn't happen for our boys at
all, there was just too much stimulation. But, you
could try a bit of benedryl or something else your
pediatrician would recommend to help knock them out
for at least a few hours on the flight.Plan on not
resting much yourself and have all your essentials with
you. We were formula feeding at the time, and I didn't
bring enough so had to have a can shipped over which
cost over $100! (One boy had sensitivities so I had to
use a specific brand...)I also went to Amazon.UK to
order diapers and have them shipped in advanced. This
saved a lot of space in our luggage.Don't forget the
kids need passports too. We got our photos done at the
post office on Diamond Heights, and it was ok there.
Not great but we managed to get it done.Good
luck!Patricia

Congratulations on your twins!Yes the Bundle Mes work
on that stroller and I'd get the Infants for now. They
should last at least a year, depending on how long her
babies are.We have had JJ Cole Bundle Mes on our City
Mini Double (side by side) since our twins were born.
We used the Original version for Infants for about a
year then moved to the next version for 1-3 YOs when
the girls got too long. They have straps that you can
use to secure it on the stroller. It's not a perfect
fit but it works very well. Hopes this helps.Happy --
and warm -- strolling

Great question! We use the Bundlemes on the Citi Mini
Double and are quite happy with them. Adjusting the
straps through the Bundlemes can be a challenge, and
re-positioning them after unfolding the stroller takes
a few extra moments... but they're really great
overall. I ordered the toddler version of the
Bundlemes when our boys were about 6 months old, and
they swam in them, but they worked and were plenty
warm. When the clothes for autumn come out (guessing
in the next month or so) The Gap will have thick
onesies with hoods - last year they looked like bears -
that we found to be easy to put on and navigate the
stroller straps, and good for the not-too-cold days.
These, plus blankets for the cold days, were great to
use up until the boys were ~ 6 months old and started
to kick off anything that wasn't snapped/zippered on.
