1. Music Classes for over 3 year olds

I wanted to post a recommendation on Jon School of
Music, which my three year olds and I checked out this
afternoon. I had been to Blue Bear, GG Music Together
albeit when the boys were younger but was absolutely
impressed that Jon uses real instruments and actually
tries to teach music appreciation, and making the class
fun. In one hour, the boys were able to jam on a real
drum set, a cello, a brass, guitars, keyboards. Not
just egg shakers :) And the boys were laughing and
engaged throughout. His studio is at Balboa/43rd and
surprisingly only a 15 min drive from the north part of
the city.Selfishly, I am trying to recruit additional
students so that we can have a class weekday Tuesday
late afternoons after school! If you are interested,
check out his site at www.jsom.com or email me.
Thanks, Linda

We travel a lot with our nanny. We pay per hour for
every hour he is working (read: helping or taking
primary responsibility for the children) and then
sometimes have also paid an additional flat nightly
rate in compensation for the fact he's away from his
family and instead with us. On a 12-hour travel day,
when he's helping with one kid or another on planes,
etc., that's 12 hours of pay. We've negotiated a
blended lower rate for helping vs primary care-- so in
your case maybe $14 per hour for helping when you are
there?-- but in general unless our nanny is sitting a
few rows back and watching a movie (which he's not),
he's working in one form or another, and he should be
paid. Yes, it's expensive, especially when considered
on top of the hotel and airfare, but as a former nanny,
traveling with the family is actually pretty exhausting
and I think you want to be fair about paying for time
worked. I would also recommend agreeing on time off--
truly off, like a few hours a day when your nanny can
go into town or hang in her room and watch a movie--
and then figure out fair payment for the rest of it.
Advance agreement on what's fair as far as hours and
vacation can really help reduce complicated and
unexpected situations on the trip.Good luck! Eventually
your kids will be old enough not to bring a nanny at
all, which is cheaper but also more tiring--Hilary

My daughters went into bunk beds at 4. I was nervous
at first about that top bunk, but today's bunks are
very secure, and we never had a problem. We
negotiated a weekly switch at first -- on the day we
changed the sheets, the girls also changed beds. That
lasted for about 6 weeks, and then (fortunately) they
developed different preferences, one for the top, one
the bottom. We used the bunks till about age 10.

Thanks everyone! Just went to the pediatrician this
morning and both twins are above their birth weight, so
I guess my production is ok after all. Really
appreciate your responses!
