We've only had our nanny for a few months and I'm
wondering what we should do about Christmas. Cash seems
a bit cold but I cringe at the thought of getting her a
gift she doesn't like! What is the proper etiquette?
How much should I spend/give? And which is better?

This is our first Christmas with our nanny, too, but
she's been with us for 10 or 11 months. From everything
I've read - here and elsewhere - the standard Christmas
bonus for a nanny is a week's pay. I also think that we
should add something more personal, but I'm struggling
a little to think of what! Maybe cookies, a bottle of
wine, a gift certificate for something she enjoys
(movie, mani/pedi, favorite coffee shop)?

I have not done this before, but what comes to mind for
part of your question is to use a breast milk bank to
get the remaining milk so the babies remain EBF while
you are gone (congrats on that EBF, BTW!!).Alessandra

No need to pay them. You are correct here that if you
have no contract with them, you are not required to pay
them when they don't come in and clean on a given week.
A couple things jump out at me about this issue:1. it
is somewhat surprising to me that the cleaning folks
griped about one missed cleaning over the holidays for
such a good/repeat customer. this seems like poor
customer service.2. a pay-as-you-go cleaning
arrangement is much different than a salaried employee.
While its true that with a salaried employee they are
entitled to count on the same paycheck no matter what,
the same cannot be said for a business like this.
Clients come and go, and schedules change, when you own
your own business. there are pros and cons to running
your own business (as opposed to being a live-in or
salaried cleaning person).3. if these ladies feel
strongly about wanting a regular salary for cleaning,
then think about negotiating a discounted rate in
exchange for guaranteed payments. Its just like any
other time you "buy in bulk" - you should get a
discount. But note that there may be payroll./tax
implications for you if you go this route.Setting aside
all of the above, if you simply want to pay them anyway
because you love them, or want it to be a christmas
bonus, there is nothing stopping you, of course. But I
see no obligation to do so, legal or otherwise. And
you shouldn't feel pressured to do so if it would be a
hardship for you or if you just don't think it's fair.

Thanks everyone. Yes they are on the same feeding
schedule. Yesterday and today went good! I'm determined
to get them sleeping longer than 20 min and in their
cribs! Thanks for all the wonderful advice!
