1. Moving one twin to Kaiser while the other is at UCSF??
--------------------------------------------------------
zs_mom - 12/31/2012 9:05 pm
Happy New Year to you all! I posted around 2 weeks ago
about balancing time between time at the NICU and home
with newborn preemie twins in the NICU and a 2.5 yo at
home. Now we have another issue that has come up. We
are Kaiser patients that are being treated at UCSF
because my son has a heart problem, in addition to a TE
Fistula. Kaiser called today to let us know that Malia
(twin A) would be transferred TODAY to Kaiser, since
her doctor said she was stable enough to be moved, but
Kai (twin B) would remain at UCSF because he is less
stable and facing 2 surgeries, in the coming months,
that Kaiser sent us to UCSF to be cared for. Because
Malia's only issue is that she is a preemie, Kaiser
wants her to be cared for there for insurance purposes.
(hope I am making sense - I am functioning off very
little sleep and have had a very upsetting day)
Anyway, so after about 20 phone calls and my husband
finally getting through to a supervisor at Kaiser, the
move has been put on hold. Not cancelled, but put on
hold. Wednesday morning we are supposed to have a
conference call to discuss this further. Any advice
about what to say? Anyone deal with this before? The
twins are still just 33 weeks, so I have started
non-nutritive BFing with Malia and I need to be with
her every three hours during the day to continue to
work on that. I am healing from a c-section and still
not supposed to be driving, according to my doctor, so
how am I supposed to get myself from hospital to
hospital for the next few weeks? How can I be there to
BF Malia and bond with her and also at UCSF to advocate
for Kai, talk to his doctors, ask questions and bond
with him too? Plus be there for my 2.5 yo at home??
Malia has anywhere from 2-4 more weeks in the NICU and
Kai has a few months. The situation is just really
upsetting to me and I feel let down by a medical
provider that I trusted with my well being and that of
my children too. I have called and emailed everyone I
can think of to help advocate for us - am I missing
something that I should be doing? Any advice would be
greatly appreciated.

bhavna12 - 12/31/2012 8:17 pm
Twins are now 16 weeks old, and one does not want to
sit in the car seat. Has anyone experienced this? Any
tips on getting him to be somewhat happy while in the
carseat? We've tried a pacifier, his favorite light up
noisy toy, and strolling him. (Side note, we think he's
teething now)...Any tips welcome!

Nope, one of mine hates the car seat too. Not all
babies love them. We had been using an infant insert
and taking it out seemed to help a little, but he still
cries.

Just as reassurance: I was not able to breastfeed at
all (breast cancer adventure = bilateral mastectomy).
My babies have thus been 100% formula fed from the
beginning. They are now eight months old and happy,
healthy, and growing like weeds. Certainly breast is
best. But, there are many ways to happy, healthy
babies and formula is far from the worst thing you can
give your child. I wish so badly that I could have
breast fed, but I will admit that I get more sleep and
have more freedom than the breastfeeding women I know.
Find your balance - what works best for you (in your
calm, steady state - not at the moment where you've had
enough :) ) is likely similar to what works best for
your babies, in my opinion.

I ABSOLUTELY think you should supplement if that's what
you want to do. Formula will not hurt your babies and
they're getting plenty of good stuff from partial
BFing. I do want to say however that at ten weeks I
felt desperate, trapped in the house, and decidedly
unhappy with breastfeeding due to the never ending
demand. What fixed it for me was putting my babies on a
schedule. They eat at 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, and 6:30
pm before bed, then a 10:30 pm dream feed. (When they
were little they also ate at 1 am and 4am.) That really
helped me because I knew when I could leave them and
for how long. I also started skipping feeds and leaving
either formula or pumped breast milk so someone else
could feed them, then pumping when I was out or when I
got home. I know schedules are not necessarily popular
for singletons-- I have twins so I have an "excuse"
:-)-- but it TOTALLY saved breastfeeding for me.

I also have been supplementing from the very beginning
due to not enough milk supply. I still do a mix of
breast feeding, pumping, and formula. You have to do
what's right for you. If you're happy, your babies will
be happy. Try a schedule as mentioned above. We have
been doing that, but on average of 3-3.5 hour feeds
everyday. We don't have a set time everyday (yet) but I
have an idea the day of when they will need to feed
next so I can step out as needed and be back if I
decide to feed or give all bottle.

Hi Jody- I did use a moby to carry my twins at the same
time when they were really young (1-2 mo). I found it
so so secure (i still supported their bottoms and ony
arm across their backs) and really only used it for
short distances (to walk outside to get mail, etc.
after that, they just got so big and heavy the moby
seemed to squish them so I stopped using it to carry
both babies. Hope that helps...

I posted EXACTLY this question a few months ago. Search
"wear twin infants" and maybe you can find it.I tried
the moby for my twins several times and just got a
bunch of screaming. I ended up wearing one twin and
pushing one in the stroller. When I got desperate (like
between the hours of 4 pm and 7 pm, aka the witching
hour) I would sometimes wear one in the Bjorn Miracle
and put the other one on my hip while I was dancing
around trying to soothe them. I never tried any of the
purpose-designed twin carriers and would almost
certainly find 35 lbs of baby too much now, but I have
heard some moms use double hip slings to carry their
babies once they can sit up. Mine are 5 months and not
quite there yet.

Ditto Jeccat (which seems to be a theme, of late!) on
the dual screaming in the dual Moby wrap hold. I did
often wear one in the Moby, and hold one on my hip
around the house to get them to sleep. To go out when I
need hands free, I use the double stroller a ton but if
I want to go in crowded stores, I do one in the Beco
carrier and one in a single stroller. And then, for
the ever-important morning coffee run while walking
dog: when they were little I wore two Beco carriers -
one on each hip. Worked great and both babies had fun
(so did Mom as I had two hands free for dog +
coffee!).Now, I quite often wear both in the Beco - one
on front, one on back (too heavy for two hip carries)
and/or my husband wears one and I wear the other.

Thanks for your responses! She stopped after a week, but
now she wakes about an hr earlier than the other,
better than middle of the night. ;)They are 11 and 12
lbs now. Is that good weight for 15 weeks?

Hi Megan, we actually just got back from traveling with
our 7mo old to Texas as lap kids With my husband with
me, it was doable but still very stressful at times.
Some things to think about are:(1) there's a lot of
gear. Who is going to help you in and out of the seats
(you aren't always guaranteed a flight attendant that
will be super nice and helpful. (2) do they both take
pacifiers well? If not how do you feed both on take off
and landing so their ears are ok (ours weren't taking
pacifiers anymore so we had to feed them) (3) who's
going to watch them if you have to go to the bathroom?
Hope that helps. More power to you if you can pull this
off :)After our experience, I would be so afraid!Good
luck,Elaine

Hi Megan,We've traveled via air three times with our
now eight-month-old twins - twice cross country to
visit family back east, and once to Brazil. I've never
attempted alone, but did consider it once.My thoughts:-
This will be really hard. If you are OK with that,
it's probably also doable- I'd say no connections -
direct flights only if you are alone!- Think through
every logistical challenge in advance (i.e. what's the
easiest way to get through security? When hubby and I
are together, security is easiest with me babywearing
both babies and dealing with the "liquids" for bottles,
etc. so he can be the baggage handler - I'd guess solo
would be easiest with one baby being worn and one his
carseat attached to a stroller as you'll need to bring
one carseat on the plane anyway if you are traveling
alone - you are right about needing to buy one seat -
they only allow one lap infant per adult). Our
experience is that getting stroller + carseat through
security stinks - after the checkpoint, things are much
easier - Pack up everything after every step (i.e. make
a bottle, pack up the bottle prep stuff immediately
even if it means some minor howling from a baby or two
while they wait an extra minute). Otherwise you risk
leaving 10 things you really needed behind because one
of the kids was throwing a fit and you got flustered-
Standard travel with infants advice: bring some new
toys that are interesting, pacifiers are super helpful,
feed or use pacis during takeoff and landing to help
the ears, pack a ton of wipes, change of shirt for you,
and change of outfit for both babies- I also use
pacifier wipes when we travel, and I use toy/paci
tethers for everything - bottles, toys, pacis, etc.
You can just attach all that stuff to the carseat or
carrier and prevent many struggles to find and clean
dropped toys- Feel free to email me if you want more
advice - we generally really enjoy traveling with our
twins at this age- If you make the trip, and survive
unscathed, please post your advice here! Would love to
hear tips on solo travel with two infants
