I'm wondering what activities a nanny can do with 4.5
month old twins? We recently hired a nanny who seems
okay, but she's not as energetic as I'd hoped. She
plays with the babies and shows them toys, talks to
them and sometimes tries to read to them but she's not
as animated as I'd expect and she doesn't sing to them.
She seems nice enough and she seems willing to learn
(she's young) but she doesn't seem very proactive.Am I
being too impatient? It's her third day. I just wish
she'd be more active but I recognize there's not much
you can do with babies that young so I'm wondering what
activities your nanny does with the babies. Thanks!

My baby is 4.5 months as well. I don't have a nanny.
Instead, I send her to daycare. I'm not sure if this
daycare center is unique (maybe others have insight
with this) but it's ran by a young woman who has a BA
in Early Childhood Development. What she does with my
child is talk to her in English & Cantonese, read books
to her, does tummy time, have her sit up in a Boppy
pillow with assistance to work on her trunk muscles,
play music and sing along, sing to her, have my child
grab toys from her palm to work on her motor skills,
and utilize other toys that are appropriate with this
stage of development. The caregiver is young too but I
think her educational background helps in recognizing
what developmental stage our child is in and to help
promote those skills. Hope this helps you somewhat.

We just hired a nanny and she is excellent. A My
babies are a few weeks younger than yours and preemies
so they act a little younger, but she is constantly
engaged with them while they are up (even though at
this age they don't really do to much themselves).
When they are sleeping (if she's not doing their
laundry or cleaning up our kitchen, etc.) she is
watching them while they sleep and making sure they are
warm and comfortable. That way she is there if one
starts to wake up before they are ready and needs help
going back to sleep. While they are awake she does tons
of tummy time and during tummy time she shows them
different toys and is talking to them to make sure they
are entertained and not just lying there on their
tummies. She also reads to them, shows them/plays with
their toys and stuffed animals, and talks to them all
the time. She also carries them, especially when they
need to be soothed. She had toys out yesterday that I
forgot we even had! She makes sure she is talking to
them all the time, even when she's just changing their
diaper. She also has them "play" with each other,
which basically just entails them seeing each other and
smiling at this point. She will also take them for
walks once they are ready. And she makes sure they are
on the same schedule, personally I think this is key
when nannying for twins. She is also helping me learn
how to help put the babies down for naps at the same
time, which is great!

Our pediatrician cautioned us against gels b/c you
can't regulate the amount of Benzocaine they are
getting...but a friend uses Hyland's non-benzocaine gel
with no problems. I give them a wash cloth that has
been tied in a knot, dampened, and frozen...they love
it. Or infant acetaminophen if it's really bad.

our ped (and my dentist) cautioned me against it bcs
they can swallow an unknown qunty and get sickened.I
ended up using infant tylenol (at about 19 weeks on) or
advil (later).

So far (9.5 months and six teeth each), we've survived
with Camilla homeopathic teething drops. They rock.

our girls are 18 months, their molars just came in.
all along, we've not used anything except letting them
gnaw on cold stuff, especially these:
http://www.diapers.com/p/nuby-icy-bite-teething-ring-girl-221264also,
our pedi recommended not giving acetaminophen (give
baby ibuprofen instead, she said). here's a good
article on the topic.
