We switched at about 13 months. I think you could do it
now, or wait another month to when they're 12 months
adjusted - either way is fine. Some people do formula
past 12 months, some people switch to milk a little
early. The point being that you could switch now or
wait to talk to your ped - either way should be fine.We
mixed formula and milk for a while - I think for a
couple of days it was 1/3 milk, 2/3 formula, then 1/3
formula, 2/3 milk, then all milk. They didn't seem to
notice or care, so we probably could have made the
switch more abruptly, but mixing wasn't a big deal to
me, so I figured we'd make it a gradual change. And we
don't heat milk during the day, but still offer a warm
sippy of milk (to our 18 month olds) in the morning and
before bed.

I too gave up BF at 7 months bacause of depleted supply
and really beat myself over it. Looking back now, I
really shouldn't have given myself such a hard time and
got depressed over it. You tried your best and you did
all you can. Don't worry about breaking the bond with
your twins. Remember to take care of yourself, a happy
mom = a happy family. Good Luck!

I know how you feel. Everyone was and is still always
asking me if I am breastfeeding. My boys were born at
37 weeks and were healthy, but I had complications and
was very ill after giving birth. Like you, I was soley
caring for my twins by myself during the day starting
from when they were 3 weeks old (my husband is self
employed and couldn't take a lot of time off). I tried
pumping, but never produced enough. I often felt
guilty, but the reality was that I was weak and still
recovering. Breastfeeding and pumping is a lot of work
and the free moments I did get, I just wanted to rest.
Bottom line is that you do what is best for you. Don't
beat yourself up about it -- if your kids are thriving
and happy, you are doing a great job. It amazes me how
other women can be; we all need to support one another.
Plus, those who don't have twins just don't get it.
Twins are different - double the work, but double the
joy. (Of course, I caught myself the other
day...someone told me she was pregnant and my reponse
was "oh, only one"....geez that came out wrong!)

A failure is the last thing you should feel like - your
twins sound like they are thriving, growing, and doing
well. That's the whole point, right? I, like the other
posters, wasn't successful at breastfeeding. BFing had
always been my plan, but I just never had even close to
enough milk. (The twins were early and I had
pre-eclampsia, but who knows the reason?) I took
supplements, pumped religiously 8x per day for the 3
weeks that the kids were in the NICU, (but less
frequently once they were home, since I was by myself
with them a lot), met with lactation consultants many
times, but nothing seemed to make a difference. I
wasn't getting enough milk for one baby. In those first
few months I was exhausted, and I didn't eat, drink, or
sleep enough. If I had been able to shut myself in a
room and pump, eat, drink and sleep around the clock,
maybe THEN I would have been able to give them
breastmilk... but that wasn't even close to the reality
of the situation. So they got a little breastmilk that
I pumped, and mostly formula. I did the very best I
could do, given the circumstances. And because my
supply was so low, I did very little breastfeeding -
there just wasn't time to give both a chance to BF -
one at a time in those early days - and then follow up
with a bottle. You - like everyone above - did the best
you could. That's what's best for the babies - a mom
who cares enough to give them the very best she can. I
think of it like running a marathon: finishing it is
the point. Would you berate yourself for not winning?
Would you compare your time with an Olympic athlete? No
- you'd be proud of yourself for doing it. Just because
other women have been able to make it work (they had
more agreeable breasts, they had more help, more sleep,
fewer babies, who knows?) doesn't mean that EVERYONE
should be able to do what they did. The fact that
you're even stressed out about this shows how much you
care. Your kids are lucky to have you, and the best
thing you can do for them is to make choices that allow
you to thrive, too.

Thank you to everyone who reached out to me with
stories and encouragement and advice. It looks like my
daughter may have a weak lower jaw that is making her
less effective at nursing so we are finishing off each
feed with a bottle to make sure she is full at least
until I meet with a lactation consultant next week.
I've been able to get a little more sleep and between
that and your words of encouragement I'm feeling
infinitely more optimistic.
