2. 9 month old nap advice -- No CIO

How do you (or your nanny) put your 9 month old twins
down for a nap by yourself? We have to
bottle-feed/rock/hold our babies till they get super
drowsy/fall asleep. It's really difficult to do this
with just one adult. Right now, our nanny uses a baby
swing for one of the twins as an extra hand while she
feeds rocks the other down. But I'm worried about what
will happen when they are (very soon) too big for the
swing! What do you use as an extra hand? Are their
other swings for bigger babies that you would
recommend? The problem is that they both crawl very
fast and pull themselves up on everything, so there's
no good place to put one baby while rocking the other
one to sleep in the nursery. They also get upset if you
leave them alone in a different room (i.e. in a play
yard to go elsewhere). Any thoughts/recommendations
would be helpful. We don't want to do CIO for naps.

We transitioned to putting them down in their cribs
awake. We turn on lullabies, sing, read books until
they both get sleepy. No CIO, but also only hands-free
entertainment. Many days we can walk away and they
happily "talk" to one another until they go to sleep.
I also give them their stuffed animals in their cribs
and then take them away once they finally fall asleep
(their stuffed animals are big so I don't comfortable
with them sleeping w/ them). We are relentless about
the timing of the morning nap (9/9:15am) and now that
they are used to the routine it's rarely a problem -
they stay down for an hour or talk to one another if
they wake up early. Afternoon nap I've given up - we
push them around in the stroller until they are
sleeping ("we" being me or nanny). My boys are also 9
months. Good luck!

At 5 months our nanny is training them to sleep in
their cribs. We used to let them fall asleep in the
swing. She puts them down awake about 2 hours from when
they woke last. This is based on her observation of
them being tired around this time. They cry, but more
like whine and eventually fall asleep. It started with
30-45 min of crying/whining and now it's 10-20. I'm
hoping this means they are learning to nap on their
own. Another thing is they take short naps - 30-60 min,
mostly on the lower side. No solution for that yet
unless we do a stroller walk outside in which case it's
an hour.

I haven't had my babies yet but I've had my maternity
pictures taken thus far with Nancy Alcott. She was
awesome and I felt so comfortable with her! And her
pictures are AMAZING. She's very popular though, so I'm
not sure if she has availability - worth to check.

I *love* our Becos! We have one adjusted for me and one
for hubby/nanny. When we travel through airports (or
when my husband travels on business) I wear one on
front, one on back. We've also worn one lap baby each
from SF to Brazil with little complaint from babies
(and an almost solid night of sleep). Only complaint
is lack of sun shield (think the newer models may
have?) and lack of pocket (I attached a zippered
running wrist wallet to one strap).

i love the ergo. from 4 mos+ or so (once necks are
strong) an ergo on back is fantastic. like an
effortless, supported piggyback. my husband and i hike
with the girls (18mos) in them every weekend. we also
have kelty kids hiking kid carriers. like those too,
but the ergos are great around the house wearing a baby
while doing chores, at the grocery store (one in the
ergo on back and one in the cart). i consider my ergo
to be indispensable. i use it every day. love it. the
ergo on front with the infant insert is fine early on.
the ergo on front, like any other carrier, is hard on
your back once the kids get big. hope that helps.
haven't used a becco, so can't comment there.

also, it's easy (and comfortable) to wear one on front
and one on back with ergos, too. and the sun shield
got a lot of use early on.

I have an ergo and many bjorns. I know you aren't
looking at bjorns. The bjorns work fine but I'm not in
love or anything. I NEVER use the ergo because my
babies like to face out. All three of my kids. You
cannot face out in the ergo. One of the beco models
lets you face out or in. So I'd get that one because
you just don't know what your baby will like and at
least you have options.

Another option is the Cybex 2.Go. We love ours. Like
the beco, baby can face out while carried in front.
This was a necessary feature with my first. And like
the beco and ergo, you can carry baby on your back.

i wore a mesh babybjorn (the air model) around the
house ALL day EVERY day for the first 2-3 months. it
was lightweight; a truly elegant accessory! ;)then i
moved on to the ergo...and never looked back! :) oh,
also there are a couple of different types of ergos.
the classic, the sport, etc. i suggest definitely
getting the classic if you get one. best, jen

Forgot about the facing out thing until I read others'
posts. - at nine months I still front carry them
facing out rather frequently - they love it at parties.
That was also a criteria for me. I also used two
Becos for hip carry when the boys were really small and
that was still comfy. I use hip carry on and off (with
just one!) now as well.

My experience has been that I'm most happy working part
time. I work MWF and I love having something that's
just me- not me as someone's mommy- but I also love my
time at home. I'm a better mom with this situation. If
its an option for you, I'd look into it. Sent from my

I have 5 mo old twins as well. I love them dearly,
think of them A LOT in meetings, while walking to a
meeting, while talking to people but I feel I made the
right decision for me. I enjoy the work I do and
interacting with adults about work. I have the utmost
respect for SAHMs. They do so much! Ultimately you have
to do what's right for you. I'd love to work part time
but my current job does not allow for that.

Thanks everyone, it's great to hear from so many
people. Recently I've been pumping and supplementing
with formula (I don't produce the full amount). Breast
feeding when starting work didn't work so well with
timing. When I did it on the weekend, my nipples became
really sore. I hope the first 4 months of bonding meant
something!I think I'll keep going as long as I can
based on supply and quality. I'll make it work with my
day work! Does pumping also allow me to eat for 3? :) I
feel like I still do!Thanks again.
