I went through a period when I had to breastfeed one at
a time before I switched over to bottles exclusively.
During that time I tried to anticipate when they would
be hungry (they were on a tight schedule by then so it
wasn't too hard) and get started early when I was
alone. My daughter was a much faster nurser so I would
usually feed her first while my son played on the floor
or continued sleeping. Once we were on to bottles
exclusively we worked hard to teach them to hold their
own (even during cuddly nightime bottles-my husband was
especially disciplined about this!) so that one could
be propped up on a pillow (in crib or on floor) and
feed him/herself. This took a while for them to be able
to finish a whole bottle but it helped stop the crying
while they worked on it. I found the floor to be the
easiest place during most stages. (Including now at 14
months when they stumble around like drunks taking
swigs off their bottles while standing.) Their room or
our gated off living room are both safe for them to
roam around in and have toys, and since I'm on the
floor already it's easy for me to grab and catch them
as needed. But Jen's chair idea is probably much more
sane!!-Robin

Thank you for your replies!We ended up buying the FP
chairs as we are doing baby-led weaning but have yet to
try them reclined for bottles. Will do so though! I
like the idea of the floor too-- baby proofing the
house (or house-proofing babies!) feels a little
daunting but we'll need to face the music very
soon--our girl is highly locomotive for someone who
does not yet crawl.

one idea for baby proofing is to have almost nothing in
their bedroom, and a baby gate at the door (love this
one: http://tinyurl.com/bdbmj2d). to establish one
room in the house as a safe zone.that's been my tact.
two cribs, two canvas LLBean extra large bags full of
toys, a rug. that's it. plus an armchair for me to
sit in and read while they're locomoting. their
dresser is in our room - which is awesome for putting
away clothes during naps. and, no worries that it will
fall on them once they start climbing...i love their
room. it's been great for us. also, don't hesitate to
use their cribs a lot for play time. particularly once
they start pulling up and falling. i hung our in their
room in the chair with them in their cribs (or sharing
a crib) to play for weeks, until they got through that
stage where they could fall onto their bottoms safely.
we also still use two big square pack 'n plays
(http://tinyurl.com/b54htwp) downstairs in the living
room all the time. they're big enough that the girls
can really spread out and play. my mother-in-law found
them for us at citykids store in on clement. they've
been great. they take up a ton of floor space, but are
so worth it in terms of usefulness. if you have any

I just interviewed Dr. Pickering yesterday, and she was
really great. She seemed nice and low-key, and overall
a very easy person to talk to. Their practice (Pacific
Pediatrics) has a member of their team on rotation at
CPMC California at all times, so if you are delivering
there, your babies will be well-attended during their
stay. They also participate in CPMC's pediatric
after-hours clinic (PERC), so while it's a bit of a
drive to the California Campus, it's nice to know you
have good options 24/7. Logistically, the practice
seems well-located if you're in the Noe/Bernal/GP area,
and their parking garage had plenty of spaces for $4/an
hour. However, traffic-wise, I still found it to be a
bit of a pain, as there is no fast way to get there.
You are on surface streets with stop signs or lights
the entire time, and you have to cut through the heart
of the Castro to get to the Davies campus. I timed the
trip home (around 5:00 pm), and it took 20 minutes from
their office via Dolores to our home in Bernal (3
miles). When we go to CPMC, it usually takes the same
or less time because we can take Fell or
O'Shaughnessy/Laguna Honda quickly across the city. We
are going to try the Daly City option next that Judy
mentioned above. I just have to think 13 minutes via
280 seems like a better option if you have two
screaming and/or sick babies than 20 minutes in
stop-and-go in the city.
