1. Any parents of twins out there with another on the way or a
third child??

gabriellesparkly - 3/13/2013 1:39 pm
Hi,We have soon to be 4 year old twins and are
expecting our third in July. I just wondered if there
are any other parents in the same boat or who already
have twins + another, to swap notes with in terms of
what to expect, cars that fit 3 kids, change in family
dynamic, differences in caring for one after twins....
I have quite a few friends with 3 singletons but having
twins and one is definitely different. Look forward to
hearing from anyone!

3. Advice on what to do

jjwahl - 3/13/2013 7:17 am
Hello everyone...our b/g twins are going to preschool
in the fall and we are so excited that they got into
the school we wanted but we are not sure how to proceed
with our nanny. First lf all, we all love her and want
to keep her. Our kids will be going to school from
12:30-3:30 every day so we need her to care for them
all morning, take them to school (one block from our
house), and pick them up and care for them until 6pm
(we both work). She has worked 8-6pm for us for the
past 3 yrs. Our dilemma is what to do about the 3hrs
she is not with the kids. She lives right by us too so
she could go home during that time....i do not want to
lose her but I want to offer her somethimg that is fair
to all of us. Has anyone experienced this? Having her
do housework for us during those hrs is not really an
option....any advice would be appreciated...

4. Poly Vi Sol with iron, or similar?
--------------------------------------------------------
ppatcat - 3/13/2013 5:54 am
Our pediatrician suggested we might consider giving
Poly Vi Sol with iron to our 6 month old twins. They've
been on 40% breastmilk/60% formula since birth and have
always had regular BMs. We started them on solids a
couple weeks ago. What's your experience been with
giving PolyViSol with Iron or similar multivitamin with
iron drops? If you put it in food or the bottle, can
the babies taste the difference?I'm nervous about
potential constipation issues and them rejecting the
bottle/food because of the "weird" taste. Are there any
good tasting multivitamin with iron drops you'd
recommend?Thanks!

Unfortunately, I have a ton of experience with this
one. Our twins were born at 28 weeks, and the iron
stores for a baby are apparently built up in the 3rd
trimester so they needed poly vi sol with iron from
birth until - I can't even remember now, perhaps 9
months? A LONG time... It turns your milk/formula
green, and it tastes awful. But fortunately for us, my
kids knew it from birth so we were always able to get
them to choke it down. I would anticipate that you'll
have a hard time with 6-mo-olds in the beginning, but
if the Dr. says to do it then it means your kids do
need more iron which is vitally important. Some months
we'd have better luck putting the dose in a very small
amount of milk which made it dark green and yucky, but
quick to get down. After a while, one twin would gag
and vomit the vitamin back up, so we started putting
the dose in a full bottle of milk and making sure the
correct twin drank that entire bottle that day. It was
a bit more stressful, but it worked well. We had no
constipation problems. I never heard of a better
tasting brand. Every Dr. from the NICU to our
Pediatrician always said to use Poly Vi Sol. We bought
it on Drugstore.com because sometimes the local store
would be out of the "with iron" version and we grew
tired of driving around town until we could find it.
Good luck on this one!!

My babies were born early at 34 weeks and have required
the poly-vi-sol w/iron since birth. I am hoping they
can get off of it at their 6 month appointment next
week, but we'll see. Anyway, to your answer your
question - I do not think there are any vitamins w/iron
that smell/taste OK and yes, they can taste the
difference. My daughter would always throw-up the
vitamin in the NICU when they would put it in her
entire feed/bottle, that was until a nurse recommended
we feed the dose to her like this:put the vitatmin in a
separate bottle filled with 10 to 20mls of breast milk
or formula and feed that to the babies first then
follow it with a regular bottle of only breast milk or
forumla. This allowed us to give them the vitamin
without making the entire bottle gross and green. My
daughter never threw it up this way.If my babies
haven't pooped in a day I don't give them the
poly-vi-sol w/iron and just give them the regular
poly-vi-sol w/o iron or I skip the vitamin completely
until they have a poop.

I'm remembering now that one time our twins got
constipated and we were advised to give them 10-20mls
of prune juice, but not to skip the vitamin. Boy did
it work. We dubbed that day "Poopfest, 2010"

My guys did not skip a beat when poly vi sol was in
their bottles. They still gobbled it up. Maybe depends
on the baby? My guys were eff.

I posted this info on the SFPOM new and expectant
parents group facebook page (feel free to join us over
there!). We used the Childproofer and he was helpful.
I have also heard good things about Alex at
SafetyNook.Childproofing is essential for twin
families! Here are some products that have been most
helpful for us:I use these door top locks in lieu of
baby gates. This allows me to control access to any
room in the house, and I know that the kids can't
outwit it. It's also a LOT cheaper than a baby gate! I
ended up installing these on every interior door, and
it has been the single best purchase I have
made.http://www.amazon.com/Child-Proof-Deluxe-Door-Lock/dp/B0014WN86Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1360794438&sr=8-3&keywords=childproof+door+lockPinch
guards for when the kids start playing hello/goodbye
with each other and slamming the door in each others'
faces!http://www.amazon.com/Especially-Baby-Finger-Pinch-Protector/dp/B003V0MGIA/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1360794734&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=childproof+pinch+guardWe
use kidco pressure mounted gates and they are super
sturdy without making holes in the walls. These are
very difficult for most adults to open, and my criminal
mastermind toddlers have not yet figured them out. I
use these to block off my kitchen. If you have stairs
you will need to get wall-mounted ones and drill them
into the
walls.http://www.amazon.com/KidCo-G1000-Pressure-Mounted-Gateway-White/dp/B006P54WFI/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1360794871&sr=1-2&keywords=kidco+baby+gateI
use these over the closet in their room. It makes it
impossible for them to get at everything and
reorganize.http://www.amazon.com/Mommys-Helper-Slide-Lok-Bi-Fold-Door/dp/B000P635T2/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1360795012&sr=1-1&keywords=bifold+door+child+lockAlso,
I installed this type of horrendously annoying latch on
every drawer in my house and it has been well worth the
hassle. My kids were dumping all the clothes out of
their dresser and trying to pull open drawers to climb
on them and now they can't do that.
http://www.amazon.com/Dreambaby-Safety-Latches-12-Pack/dp/B003NSAY7U/ref=sr_1_3?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1360795178&sr=1-3&keywords=drawer+locks+child+safetyFinally,
get outlet covers that are flat, like these. I had the
other kind that were easier to remove and my kids
figured them out in two minutes.
http://www.amazon.com/Mommys-Helper-Outlet-Plugs-Pack/dp/B00081J3N6/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1360795111&sr=1-1&keywords=outlet+coverI
hope this list is not too overwhelming! I have found it
to be a huge advantage to have a very childproof home
so I don't have to watch them too carefully all the
time, and they can play independently (while I drink a
margarita on the couch!). It has also made it easy for
me to host lots of playdates, since we can just let the
kids play while we chat, knowing that they are safe
from household hazards, if not entirely safe from each
other!

We also used the childproofer and I think overall it
was worth the money. It took him about an hour to do
what it would have taken us weeks - but it's basically
simple stuff - gates, safety locks on drawers etc. so
it just depends on how organized you are feeling.
Overwhelmed? Use him. We got it all done much earlier
than we needed to which gave us time to get used to it
all before it was actually necessary for the kids'
safety. The main thing we needed to focus on (and the
childproofer helped us think about) was decluttering
and simplifying. Definitely their room and any other
"safe" zones you decide to gate off for them, but also
other parts of the house. At 15 months we are starting
to let them roam around more and it's nice to know that
we've gone through the whole house and moved any really
dangerous and breakable stuff above their reach. Of
course, they still always head straight to the shoe
rack and start chewing on dirty shoes but it's good for
their immune systems, right?!Good luck!Robin

Also a love/hate with ours. We caved and bought the
tray for one of them and would for the other but it's
an older model we bought used and the tray is not
available for it. Julie makes an excellent point - we
thought it would be nice to eat as a family at the
table but realistically almost always end up eating
after they go to bed. I'm sure they will be great once
the kids are a little older but right now (15 months)
it is a HUGE cleanup after after meals. But I think
that also depends on your feeding style. I tend to let
them play with their food and try to feed themselves so
it's a complete disaster area afterwards! Our nanny is
stricter with them about not playing with their food,
utensils, sippy cups so she does not have such a
cleanup issue. As for the tipping issue - we installed
the little plastic feet that the chairs come with and
have not had that issue. Both of them push away from
the table with their feet and hands frequently.- Robin

Megan, I flew United yesterday w/the kids and they
didn't have a problem with the stroller. And I thought
of something else. You mentioned your kids are 7
months. Assuming they are eating purees, don't bring
jar food. I am sure thats obvious, but just in case :)
Just pack those happy tot puree packs. Less mess and
things that are easily tossed = easier.
