1. Fighting babies about food
--------------------------------------------------------
zarate - 3/22/2013 5:26 pm
Today both babies are not eating much. The main eater
(often 30+ oz. formula ) has had 13 oz today. By now,
he normally has had 18 oz. His sister on the other
hand went from 10 minute nursings to longer, and also
extra feedings. Instead of 8 AM and noon, today has
been 2 AM, 8 AM, 9 AM, noon, 2 PM. But the bottle? Not
so much. It's making me upset that they are not eating
'as usual'. Three questions/asks:1. Is it common/OK for
an 8 month old to decide not to eat as much? 2. Can the
lesser formula drinking be bc we changed from single to
croscut bottle nipples?3. I am freaking out and upset
they are not eating 'as usual'. Help me off this ledge
please... :)Thank you!

2. Anyone w/ young toddlers commute to daycare/preschool?
--------------------------------------------------------
anonymous - 3/22/2013 3:35 pm
I'll be starting a new job in a couple months which
will be a 45min-hour commute one way, depending on time
of day (as an aside, we plan to move out of the city by
the end of the year). There is a preschool with
openings located 5 mins from my new office which seems
like a wonderful place. Am I crazy to consider
commuting with two 2.5 year olds every day (until we
move)? They have been attending a daycare here in SF
since January so separation/preschool environment is
not an issue. I'm mostly concerned about (1) getting
ready in the mornings; and (2) the long car ride. I'm
alone in the mornings b/c my partner works market
hours, and getting the twins + me ready in the mornings
have been tough (clothing battles, breakfast messes,
one of them requires wrestling/cajoling into his
carseat 90% of the time). I feel like I'm always
running late. I don't have to be at the office by a
strict time. Will they be changing developmentally
anytime soon, or will the morning battles get worse as
they get closer to 3, or does it totally depend on the
kid? They have no history of getting carsick but will
they go crazy sitting in the car everyday for that
long? Or will it be a nice time to chat together?Any
opinions / experiences would be welcome! TIA.

Dear parents, I am in the process of figuring out why
some of our members (including myself) are unable to
see our site www.sfpom.org . Could you please help me
out by telling if you can see it from your home or work
computer? Do you get "The connection has timed out" or
a different message? I am trying to access how
widespread the problem is.Many thanks!webmaster

elizabethb74 - 3/22/2013 9:28 am
Our nanny called in sick 2 days this week which was
bound to happen but it really left my husband and
myself in a tough bind. Our twins are 11 weeks old and
we need to find reliable help that we can trust.Has any
used Care.com for back up? Did you like it? What other
options might there be for back up
help?Thanks!Elizabeth

I've also had luck posting to the parent listservs I've
been on, just explaining the situation and providing
all the pertinent details, and was able to get coverage
from folks that other local parents knew and
recommended (like, their own nannies on days they
weren't working for them, or people they regularly used
at babysitters, etc.)GOOD LUCK!!Some employers also
have childcare options like BrightHorizons, or
ParentsInAPinch... that's worth investigating if your
employers offer access to anything like that.

Hi,I'Ve heard great things about wondersitter being
available in a pinch. Wefound our nanny and two back
up babysitters on Care.com. Never had a badexperience
with anyone we interviewed. If you don't use
wondersitter Myadvice is to get your list of backups
ready and vetted now. So when theday comes the nanny
is sick, you have options of to call. Also you
canalways get a more reliable nanny in addition to the
above.Warm regards,Virginia On 3/22/13 10:09 AM,

We're thinking of adding some college age babysitters
to our list of back up help and wanted to know what the
going pay rate is? We don't want to pay too little or
too much. What do you pay your sitters?Thank you!

I second waiting for your own place. Food gets/goes
everywhere with BLW.It is intimidating-- it is new, and
feels more complicated than exerting full control with
spoon and pureed food. Will they choke on the chicken
leg? With carrot pieces? What about the blueberry
skins? If right now you give 2 oz per feeding of puree,
in the beginning of BLW it is doubtful you'll get that
much into them. Inhale deeply and remember, it is about
the travel, not the destination right now...What we've
done so far is to make sure the babies are sitting up
on chairs, and we watch carefully. The stuff we feed is
still in stick format, with some wedges (apple, pear,
sweet potato. but i think sweet potato in sticks would
have had more success). We have done some adapting
though. Giving yogurt by dipping apple on it was such
an extreme mess we now put it in little kidsme feeders
and let them hold that and suck the yogurt. Husband was
not comfortable with babies and blueberry skins in the
same sentence, so we put blueberries into those and let
them suck the insides out, leaving skins behind. We've
done broccoli 'trees', squash in cubes (needs to be in
sticks me thinks, see next...). Cukes, red bell
peppers, zucchini, all in long index finger-thick
sticks. The slippery stuff we cut with a crinkle cutter
so there is more graspable surface.I've had to finger
swipe apple, one kid bit too much. Otherwise it's been
fine. Don't forget to offer water, either in sippy cups
or the bottle.OH! get some pelican bibs... Lots of food
will go into them, for a while more so than into the
babies.
