I'll be starting a new job in a couple months which will be
a 45min-hour commute one way...

I've been starting the same debate with myself though
my kids are only 11.5 months. We are currently using a
nanny in SF while we work on the Peninsula, and it's
been great. As we start to think about waitlisting at
preschools (really?! already??) we are debating
options further south as well. So, no real answers for
you, just sympathy :). I will say that my parents
commuted to work/our preschool way back when and it was
about 45mins each way. Of course, carseats were much
easier then (someone needs to come up with a carseat
kids enjoy and parents can use easily without torturing
both kid and parent!). I remember a very happy
childhood of long car rides chatting with my siblings,
parents, and others in our carpool (I got carsick
nearly every morning but still had fun).

I have a nanny who is great with the kids but calls in
sick a lot. I've been using Wondersitter and
Bananaberry, and have always had great sitters from
both. I used to try to have backup people I could call,
or would try to call friends for recommendations, but
making a bunch of phone calls, emails, etc., while also
caring for your kids and getting them and you fed and
ready (mine are toddlers, so it's an involved process)
is tough. Plus, it's hard to find someone who's
basically available immediately - even my back up
people would have other jobs. So now I just go with the
services. They can't ALWAYS find someone, and it helps
to be a little bit flexible with your hours/need, but
overall both services have been great.

We do $15 an hour, but sometimes she also takes trade
(furniture we're getting rid of anyway, a ride here or
there, etc.).

We did a combination of BLW and traditional puree
feeding. We would offer something pureed on a spoon,
but would also give them spears of food that they could
hold/gnaw on if they were interested. We had the most
luck with pear slices, cucumber slices, red bell
pepper, lightly steamed asparagus, and some kinds of
melon. As the kids got more adept, we migrated to foods
cup into smaller pieces. But we still offered spoon
foods. So maybe you don't have to come up with a whole
new routine, if whatever you've been doing is working -
you can just offer some bigger pieces of food that they
can play with if they're interested. And it helped me
to keep in mind that the bottom line with any solid
food right now is that it really doesn't matter how
much they get in. Even if they eat nothing, and just
get formula or breastmilk, that's fine for the next 6
months or so - right now it's just for (messy)
fun/learning.

I'm really glad you posted this as I have many of the
same questions. Have we ever had an expert speaker on
this at the SFPOM? Would be brilliant if we did, sure
there are plenty of parents with the same questions
too.

We decided to send our twins to a preschool that's part
of the private school. So, I don't know if that means
"it feeds into K"? All I know, they make sure that the
kids are ready for K, or they tell you to hang in pre-K
for another year. We have September kids and wanted to
give them a chance to start before they are five.
Stratford school still respects the old December cut
off, so we went with them. Kids will stay or go
depending on their readiness, not arbitrary age cut
off. The school has very strong academics and this is
what we wanted. Preschool is not play based. I know
that that's a big NO for many parents, but we are ok
with that. We are lucky that we can afford the private
route. We were planning on a local public school (well,
hoping for), but this new age cut off made us go to
private. The bonus - we have a school till 8th grade -
no need to sweat about assignments and admissions till
