1. Recommendations on babysitter services?
--------------------------------------------------------
kaluzoo - 3/26/2013 12:26 am
Hello Twin Parents,Any recommendations on babysitter
services? We have used Urban Sitter a few times and
have found two sitters we liked through them. But
those two are often booked and our attempts at booking
other sitters through them have not worked out so well
(one person cancelled 40 mins after the job
started...). They also seem pretty expensive to me
(mostly bc they don't offer a daytime vs nighttime rate
- it feels crazy to me to pay someone $20/hour to sit
on my couch while the kids sleep...). Their credit
card fee (one of the major conveniences) is also very
high (though I could of course get it together and pay
cash :) ).Any advice on alternatives?Sarah

Don't freak out!At eight months, sometimes the world
around them is much more interesting than eating. Don't
worry about it; babies will generally not starve
themselves. One day they'll eat so little you wonder
how they manage and the next day, they'll eat so much
you wonder where they put it all! Let them eat as much
as they want to when they are hungry and if they don't
want to eat, don't force them. I have no experience
with bottles at that age and have no advice about
nipples.

Ditto the previous poster. Don't freak out! Kids vary
their habits for mysterious reasons. Growth spurts,
sudden fascination with the world around them, minor
illnesses that aren't really noticeable except for
symptoms like loss of appetite. Or a change in routine
- if the crosscut nipples are new and strange, it may
take a day or two for the little one to adjust. They
know what they need, so just follow their
lead.Hopefully by now they are back to their normal,
reassuring patterns... and have left the 2AM feedings
behind!

Hi again,I thought I'd re-post since noursej wanted to
hear what the results were for us. There is also
another thread going about the SFUSD lottery where
several of us posted (including me) so you can check
that out.I plan to email the president of SFPOM to see
if we can set up another kindergarten education night
like we used to have, so that parents like myself can
share their experiences and answer questions for those
of you are just starting/thinking about this process.
I will gladly participate in it. I also think the more
people you talk to, to inform yourself about the
process, the better. That is how I learned a lot.I'm
also friends with Tejal Shah who started KidAdmit --
the online preschool directory/application process.
Her son goes to preschool with my twins and she
realized how difficult/confusing this process is so she
started this website. Her long term vision is to have
it for kindergarten, too, which would be a huge boon.
Not sure it will be in place for those of you applying
in the next 2 years, but keep the faith!OK, so here is
what happened for us:We got very lucky, I think. We
applied to 6 private schools for our boy/girl twins:
Alta Vista, Children's Day, Live Oak, Marin Prep, SF
Day and SF Friends. We were accepted at 3: Alta
Vista, Marin Prep and SF Day. We got waitlisted at the
other 3. We told Live Oak to remove our name from the
waitlist as we had these other 3 choices. We asked to
remain on the waitlist at CDS and Friends because we
really liked those schools. We applied for financial
aid for all 6 schools. We were offered a very little
bit at SF Day and a little more at Alta Vista. For the
SFUSD lottery, we listed 10 schools and we did check
the "twin" box which means that we wanted our twins to
go through the lottery together and be assigned the
same school. When you do this, you also list the exact
same schools on each child's application. We got our
#5 school, Alvarado, which is also our attendance area
school. We liked all of our top 5 schools equally and
only listed Alvarado at the bottom of these 5 because
we knew we had more of an advantage with it being our
neighborhood school. We figured why not try for the
other ones. (This process will become more clear when
you understand how the lottery works.)In the end, it
was a very difficult decision for us because we loved
all 4 schools we were choosing between. But
finanically the commitment to a private K-8 school was
too much for us to bear long term. We could do barely
just afford it, and it would hinder our ability to save
money for college or potentially private middle/high
schools if we go that route. For us, we decided that
the added stress and the less overall expendable income
would be a hindrance to our family that outweighed a
private education...especially when we had a good
public school like Alvarado. Also, it appealed to us
that we would be sending our twins to a neighborhood
school where a lot of children who attend would also
live in our neighborhood. It is an extremely personal
decision, and one that you cannot make until you have
the options in front of you -- whether they be private
or public or both. But ultimately, being informed
about all our options by talking to other parents and
running our own financial models is what enabled us to
make this decision.I'm happy to be a resource to talk
to other parents who are about to embark on this
process and to pay it forward. Good luck to all of
you! Virginiamom to Alexandra and Trevor, age 5

To those who have been through the process, how much
emphasis did you place on having at least 2 classes per
grade, so that the twins could be in separate
classrooms? I know that many (most?) of the private
schools in SF are only 1 class per grade... It seems
this could be quite limiting.

My kids miss the cut-off for kindergarten for next
year, but they will be in their 2nd year of Pre-K at
Childrens Day School. I opted to have them in the same
Pre-k class this year, even though there are 3 classes.
I will likely do the same next year, though I have met
with their teacher already to discuss a possible split.
BUT, I felt strongly that I would want them apart for
Kindergarten onwards and that was a driving force in
choosing a school with 2 classes per grade. I already
see how important it is for each to tell me about their
day through their own lens without being corrected or
edited by the other. Both my kids are gregarious and
somewhat dominant, but even so I see how easy it is
for one to overshadow the other about school stuff.
