I am running B2B with my twins for the third year in a
row, and my nanny is not likely to join us. So it will
just be the girls and I!I would welcome running with
another Mom and their kids. We are dressing up in
Mardi Gras attire - fully decking-out the double Bob
stroller!Let me know if you will also be running and
would like to connect! We will be running fairly
slowly - around a 10 minute mile. Dr. Karen HortonMom

2. Gray (dead) front tooth in my 2-year-old daughter!

Has anyone experienced a dead tooth in their daughter
(or son)? One of my twins has obviously had trauma to
one of their front teeth and it has died. She is not
experiencing any problems and no injury was witnessed.
We are waiting to see the Dentist, whose office has
assured me it is nothing to worry about unless an
abscess develops, which would result in an extraction
(pulling the front tooth). I am a Plastic Surgeon so I
have some knowledge about teeth and bone development
(in adults), but I am also a MOM and I would appreciate
hearing others' advice and experience! It is obviously
upsetting to know my daughter had an unknown injury
that resulted in this event. Thanks in advance.Dr.

Congrats on your twins!! And - there, there.... it
WILL be ok. It is REALLY really hard at first, or at
least it can be. Any one aspect of new
mother/parenthood is challenging, but we get slammed w/
everything all at once, and I don't know that there IS
any way to be really "prepared". It's a steep learning
curve for all concerned. However - if you keep you eye
on the big picture, you'll remember that there ARE
plateaus, when things get a little more under
control... when you CAN get a little bit of a
foothold. We had serious latching problems for the
first couple of months, but hung in there - consulted
all the resources we could, and then FINALLY things
clicked for everyone, and it was WORLDS easier... I
wish we had consulted the lactation specialist at the
hospital WAY earlier than we did, as that was REALLY
helpful. (It was free where I delivered, and she was
SOOO nice, and a million times more knowledgeable
((obviously!)) than me. I was able to go in with just
one baby, to show her how we were doing things.) Also,
there are some great online resources... I can't
remember the name of the site, but I know it's listed
in the July/August 2011 issue of the SFPOM newsletter,
Multiplicity (which you can find right here on BigTent,
by searching within the "files" tab, where the archived
issues are. I think it's in a sidebar thingy at the
end of the article. That site (it's actually a male
doctor, I think... maybe Australian? Don't quote me on
that...) has lots of helpful videos on practically
every aspect of breastfeeding that can be
problematic.GOOD luck to you! Any amount of breastmilk
they're getting from you is a GREAT thing. Hang in
there, and take care of yourself, too.

I was so there with my first (singleton) - lots of
tears with multiple lactation consultants, none of whom
would give me an eta of when it would get better. Lots
of people give up and I was a few days away from that,
and then things finally clicked. Unfortunately it took
about 8 weeks (a lifetime with newborns), but for me it
was worth it in the long run (pumping / bottles /
formula is just more work). I had great luck upping my
milk supply with nursing teas (available at whole
foods, real foods, or samples at newborn connections at
cpmc) and quickly had on over supply.Have you worked
with a lactation consultant? Carole Hansen who teaches
that great twins class is one, and I plan to use her
when my twins come even if they do latch on easily just
to help us get settled 415-328-6622. There are also
good ones at Day One, but they don't do house
calls.Good luck and hang in there. And like others
said, if it doesn't work out, you're still doing a
great job!

It is very easy to get frustrated and overwhelmed with
BFing twins. It is so hard the first few weeks. My
twins were premature, and my milk didn't really come in
until week 2 or 3. Mt twins came home after four weeks,
but I remember nipple shields being a challenge for
days afterwards. I stuck with it, and it was SO worth
it as they got older (due to health benefits, of
course. But also ease of BFing instead of a million
bottles to prep and clean. And formula is a stinky,
staining mess when it comes back up!) Things that
helped me were;1. Being hydrated- don't sit down
without big water bottle next to you.2. Eating well and
a lot (keep snacks on table beside where you BF)3- lots
of sleep (I know- ha!). I got a solid 4-5 hr stretch by
sleeping through the first feed of day. I'd wake, eat
and pump and an hour before babies did-we had them on a
3 hr schedule (except during growth spurts). My husband
would use this milk for their feed the next day (and
I'd still have enough for when they woke.)4.
Supplement. I don't nap well, so my milk was low in
evenings when I was way too tired. I had to supplement
right before bed during growth spurts and later when I
wanted them to sleep through night (6-7 months old for
us. If they weren't premies, this would have been 4-5
mths.) Good luck and congratulations! Sent from my iPad

Our former nanny (was with us 2.5 years until kids
started preschool) is currently training to be a doula,
and she has TONS of twins experience and has been doing
a lot of work recently with newborns and infants to get
her hours for certification. She is not yet certified,
but she's absolutely wonderful (and can't charge as
much as a certified doula would!). Please search for
Jennie Cassasa on the forums -- I've posted about her
before with glowing recommendations. She currently is a
nanny for twin babies on Thursdays and Fridays only.
