1. High Chair Dilemma
--------------------------------------------------------
reggiesf - 6/4/2013 10:55 am
I am looking for some ideas for high chairs for my twin
boys who are 10 months old. We have a breakfast nook in
our kitchen which has these bulit-in benches. Right
now, I have the boys in the Chicco hook-on chairs. I
love this set-up so much. The table is made out of
butcherblock, so it is easy to clean. They are
protected by being in this nook and not in the way of
danger or underfoot. And, it is such a space saver for
our tiny house. The problem is as they get older/bigger
they are starting to stand-up in them since the bench
is right below. They are starting to test the limits of
these hook-ons by rocking back and forth, jumping up
and down, leaning back, etc. My dilemma is to find a
more suitable high chair for them and still be able to
keep them in the breakfast nook. The Fisher Price Space
Savers aren't great because they have to strap onto the
back and the seat of a chair; it won't work with the
bulit-in bench. I would love any ideas from my wise
twin mommies. Of course, I am starting to realize that
I might have to give up hope and move them to the
dinning room.

Hmm - that is a dilemma. My only thought is to pull the
table away from the bench just a little bit - just
enough so that their feet can't touch the bench?
Otherwise you might be able to find a way to attach a
high chair (the kind that sit on a chair, like the FP
space savers) to the bench with some screws/nails...
but that would involve drilling holes in your bench,
which might not be an option... or at least might be
less appealing than moving them out to the dining room.

Congratations! The BabyJogger City Select also has
bassinet kits you can get quickly on Amazon, or there
may be another twin family around here who is ready to
get rid of theirs. The City Select is also about 1/2
the price of the Donkey. I bought mine from another
family on here a couple months ago for less than half
of retail price. If our 2-month-olds weren't using them
practically every day, I'd pass them along to you
myself. I highly recommend them not only for long
walks, but for visiting other peoples' houses once they
are big enough to go out. We could just pop the travel
bassinets into a spare room, and we had an immediate
home base that was cozy and familiar.Speaking of
passing along, I think you inherted our night doula
Vikki? She is AMAZING, and you and the twins are very
lucky to have her!

Yikes. That should be "Congratulations!" Fat fingers,
small iPhone. :)Also wanted to clarify that I got the
bassinets here on SFPOM, not the stroller itself. It's
a pretty hot commodity around here, so I registered and
got our base stroller on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Jogger-Select-Single-Stroller/dp/B004A910UGThe
good news is when you're ready to sell it, it should go
quickly on SFPOM or CL.

I've heard the recommendation to not have them sleep
together, but I think that is a super safe, AAP
approved stance, sort of like not cosleeping and not
using bumpers in the crib, that a lot of people choose
to ignore. I think it's fine - ours shared a crib for
the first few months, as did most other twins I know.
Especially if they're swaddled they really don't get
all that near each other. Once we took them out of the
swaddles, and they started moving around a little, we
put them in separate cribs. I've also heard the
recommendation for them to lie flat, but again, I think
you have to take all the advice with a grain of salt.
If the baby has reflux then they won't be comfortable
lying flat. If you have to drive somewhere and the kids
fall asleep in the car seat, you probably don't want to
move them into a bassinet in the stroller, and risk
waking them. I think the car seats + snap & go are
fine, but you probably don't want to leave them in the
car seats for hours on end. I think the bassinets are
great if you just want to go for a walk, and don't need
the car - or car seats - at all. Our preemies were in
the NICU for about 3 weeks. The first night the first
baby was home (second baby still in the NICU) we put
her in a pack & play with a bassinet in our bedroom.
Night #2 we moved her into the nursery, and when her
brother came home, he went directly into (the same crib
in) the nursery. (Which, similar to a PP, was about 2
feet from our bedroom.) So it's really whatever you
feel most comfortable with - in your bed, in a
co-sleeper, in a bassinet/crib/pack & play in your
room, or in their own room from the start. Our kids
were born at 33 weeks, and we were never told not the
take them out, or have them around other kids, etc. A
family member pointed out that if the kids had older
siblings, no doctor would tell you to keep them away
from their siblings... and those older kids would
probably have all kinds of germs from school,
playgrounds, etc. Use common sense, but try not to get
too worried about stuff that's out of your
control.Everyone's experience is so different! Sleep
when you can, accept as much help as friends and family
offer, take short cuts wherever possible (let yourself
off the hook if your house is dirty, no one has time to
cook, you can't keep up with email and texts with
friends for a while)... be gentle with yourself. It's
such an exciting time, but it's so hard, too! I
remember just how nervous we were when the kids first
came home... I hope you guys are doing great, and
everyone is settling in (or settles in quickly, once
they're home) and finding a groove! And try to get
yourself out to the new and expectant members meetings
at Day One every other Tuesday, and meet some other
mamas going through the exact same thing! I really
looked forward to that group in the first few months.

so would love to meet up. @lmcdowell - we're right near
the ballpark too so let me know if you'd like to get
