Hello-I am planning to rent a hospital grade breast
pump while I'm at home on maternity leave. I will need
to buy one once I go back to work. Can you give me
some feedback on the most efficient breast pumps out
there??Thank you SF Parents:)

I used a Medela pump in style the first several months
after my babies were born, then when I went back to
work at 5.5 months I rented the Symphony. That became
my work pump and the pump in style was my home pump, so
I just transported milk and parts every day and not the
entire pump. It was nice that they used all the same
parts.Whatever you end up getting, just make sure it
uses the same parts as what you already have for the
hospital-grade rental so you don't have to buy all new
stuff (and I had 3-4 sets of parts and still felt like
I was constantly washing them...). I believe (but am
not 100% certain) that the Medela Freestyle, which
markets itself as a hands-free pump (but I still think
you need a hands-free bra, so it's kind of a gimmick,
and it's a lot more expensive than the pump in style)
doesn't use the same connector parts as the Symphony
(the hospital-grade Medela pump). The pump in style is
nice because it is built into a bag, and then you can
carry stuff in the bag (pump parts, small cooler for
milk, etc.). ErinBrett and Maggie (9/28/09)

5. getting 6 week babies on a schedule
--------------------------------------------------------

I have 6 week old b/g twins and I would appreciate any
advice on how people got the babies on a daytime
schedule. They are feeding every 2-3 hours starting
around 5:30 am. We are still waking them after the 3 hr
mark if they dont wake on their own and try to feed
both around the same time. If they are sleepy after a
feed we let them sleep. If they are alert, we play and
engage them. They do not have a fixed nap time during
the day. We do tummy time/activity mat and try to get
outside for a walk at some point every day. It has been
working fine, and we are following night doula guidance
of trying to feed them regularly during the day so they
sleep longer stretches at night. Curious if there are
any books or references that people have used to
establish a more fixed feed/nap/play schedule. Thanks
in advance!

It sounds like you've got a great schedule for 6 weeks!
We did things EXACTLY as you are doing them, and it
provided some level of sanity. I think it was 3-4
months before we had a set nap schedule (3 a day at
that point, morning 2ish hours, early afternoon 1-1.5
hours, late afternoon 45 minutes to an hour 15), but by
3 months we had one (the girl) who slept from the dream
feed at 10:30ish until 8ish in the morning (she finally
refused to be awakened when her hungry brother wanted
to eat at 5:45 am), and by 4 months they were both
sleeping from dream feed until past 7 am. I'm convinced
it was our adherence to the schedule you have described
that got them to be such good sleepers (and they still
are -- at 3.5 years they still take 2-hour naps at
school every day and sleep in until well past 7 every
morning (just don't ask me about bedtime because they
are killing me these days)).We did have one stretch at
about 8 weeks where the boy was extra fussy, and our
night doula suggested trying a 2.5 hour feeding
schedule instead of 3. We did that for a few weeks
during the day and it totally worked, then we were back
to 3.I don't know that it's possible to have
6-week-olds on a more predictable or set schedule than
you already have. Congrats on the babies, and great job
on being so proactive about their daily routine. I know
some people are against schedules for babies at that
age, but I don't know how you'd survive with twins any
other way, and I've heard a lot of long-term success
stories from people who started off that way.ErinBrett
