1. If Only One of Your Twins BFeeds, Do you Offer both Breasts?
--------------------------------------------------------
lmcdowell - 9/4/2013 10:35 pm
I have 4-month old twins and despite much effort, one
twin never took to nursing and at this point, I've
officially thrown in the towel. He still gets pumped
milk, and I've continued only offering one breast per
feeding to the twin that nurses.I'm still trying to get
my supply up just a bit more, I'm currently using 4-6oz
of formula a day, not a problem, but if I could get a
bit more and forgo formula altogether, it would be
preferred. I was always told with twins that you only
offer one breast per feeding, but in the case where the
other one isn't getting 'used' at that feeding (I do
switch breasts each feeding), will it help my supply to
have my nursing twin nurse on both sides at a single
feeding? And then pump both breasts after?I've tried
all the obvious tips as far as herbs, oatmeal, extra
pumping sessions (I currently pump 20mins immediately
after a feeding, both breasts, and try to add a short
one in another time if possible), massage/heat.Anyone
else have success with just one twin, but able to boost
supply later on to be able to cover the other one
too?thanks!

Hi Lauren,Yes, that's exactly my story - one twin was
nursing and one had only pumped milk. Fenugreek really
helped me to boost my supply, so I had enough and even
froze some for later. It was , however, very hard. When
I wasn't nursing I was pumping. When I have my pump to
another mom I felt like I gave a third baby away - we
spent countless hours together..I was giving breast
milk to both till they were 16 months. By that time
they were eating solid foods and had some goat and cow
milk, so it got easier. I was just giving the
bottle-fed twin pumped breast milk for an "immunity
boost". At 16 months the twin that was able to get milk
by herself went on a week-long nursing strike, so I
decided that this was a sign to stop.Good luck! I know
how hard it is to increase the supply - as soon as you
relax and stop regular prolonged pumping it goes down
again.

3. POLL: Interest in non-surgical fat reduction procedure?
--------------------------------------------------------
drkarenhorton - 9/4/2013 5:44 pm
I am a Mom of twins & a proud mothers' group member.
During the daytime, I also am a Plastic Surgeon whose
practice focuses solely on surgery. I offer
non-surgical procedures in my office through my amazing
Nurse Practitioner, and I am considering adding a
cold-based, FDA-approved non-invasive fat reduction
technology to my office.QUESTION: Would you be
interested in a non-surgical fat reduction procedure
that takes 1 hour in the office per body part treated,
has no down time and costs $1500? It would not replace
surgery if that was the most appropriate procedure, and
it is only for "spot" reduction of stubborn fatty
deposits - i.e. the abdomen, "love handles", etc.
Before I more seriously consider investing in this
technology, I am polling my patients and Moms about
their interest to see whether it is something worth
pursuing!Feel free to email me directly with your

5. Cross-country flight at 26 wks pregnant with twins
--------------------------------------------------------
Rosie_Love - 9/4/2013 4:23 pm
Hi everyone! Hubs and I are trying to figure out
whether I will be able to fly to the east coast for
Thanksgiving this year or not. I will be 26 weeks
pregnant. As this is my first pregnancy, and I'm
having twins, I have no idea what to expect. I'm 14
weeks pregnant right now and feeling great. However,
I've read tons on how twin pregnancy is high risk, and
how lots of mamas go on bed rest as early as 20 weeks.
So, needless to say, I'm scared to book my flight. Do
you think it's safe for me to go ahead and book a
ticket? Or should I wait until I'm a little farther
along to see how I'm doing? Any advice is
appreciated.Thanks!

It's really dependent on your doctor's recommendations
& whether you have any complications & your chance of
pre-term labor. 26 weeks is right near the end of your
2nd trimester & where I happen to be right now. In my
case - because Baby B has some not huge issues - which
of course only increase the chance of pre-term labor
for twins - my perinatolgost has asked me not to travel
from the 2nd half of the 2nd trimester until the end
(so that would be starting somewhere around Week 20 on
since 2nd Tri is normally considered Week 13-27). So if
you are having a normal pregnancy without any
complications up until now - I would ask your
Midwife/Doctor first. In terms of timing - it's true
that lots of stuff isn't known until you do the big
anatomy scan at 18-22 weeks - so if you can hold off
until then - you & your doctor will know more & you
will either get the all clear to go - or if you can't
travel - you will be glad you didn't spend the $ when
you can't go and can focus on just relaxing & maybe a
turkey at home instead :-)

I agree, I was having a great pregnancy until the
20-week scan when they determined my cervix was
shortened, needed a cerclage, bed rest and NO travel
(this was Dec 20 and we were supposed to travel
cross-country for the holidays the next night).
Everything turned out well, I made it to 37 weeks and
had 2 big, healthy babies, but I think you'll need to
be prepared for at least the chance that you won't be
able to travel at that point in your pregnancy. Good
luck!

My boys bath routine was practically identical to the
previous poster, and it was such a fun time of the
day.I wanted to add that I think that your 12 month old
twins are getting too old for bath seats, meaning that
they would probably be as successful as the exersaucer
has become. Personally, I think bath seats are kind of
silly anyway.

I agree- we bathe both boys together- low bath water,
no standing, non-skid mats. Draining the water before
the end of the bath will help you not to worry when you
remove the first one. I wrap one in a towel, place him
on the floor sitting up and then grab the other twin to
do the same. It's a little chaotic trying to get
diapers on both naked, wet, mobile babies, but it's not
too bad. They also enjoy splashing each other during
the bath and playing with the toys together so it's
usually pretty fun.

I'll second the last post...we had a similar pattern at
3.5 months and were recommended by our night nurse to
drop the dream feed. They slept through till 5 pm the
first night then within a few nights were going 8 pm to
7 pm. Counterintuitive, but it worked for us!
