brboatner - 9/9/2013 9:23 pm
Hi,I recently delivered twins at 34 weeks for IUGR. One
twin is home with me and the other is still in the
NICU. They are too small to breast feed, we try a few
times a day but mostly for practice. I have been
exclusively pumping and they are getting all BM via
bottle, no formula yet. I feel like all I do is pump. I
was told I needed to pump every 3 hours or 8 x per day.
I feel like due to all the pumping I am missing out on
bonding time with my babies as well as any sleep what
so ever. I have no help. I am thinking decreasing the
pumping and supplementing with formula for a mix of BM
and formula. Has any one done this? How to I go about
spacing out the pumping. Any advice regarding this
scenario is greatly appreciated.

my personal opinion: it's not worth it. i wouldn't go.
this is coming from a mom of twins who had a textbook
perfect pregnancy and carried to 39 weeks (and had a
crazy induction for days - my body wasn't ready).a
midwife at ucsf recommended i not travel by plane after
18-20 weeks. she said she was conservative about this
with twin pregnancies. she'd seen some hairy stuff pop
up over the years. as a result of her advice, i missed
a very important family wedding back east at around 22
weeks. but, look, healthy babies, healthy mama. i'd
stay put. i've not once regretted my decision.i've
also heard some horror stories where families get stuck
at their destination for months with babies in the
nicu. that's hard enough at home, i imagine.we travel
a couple of hours each way almost every weekend, just
for fun. we travel east several times a year to see
family. it's part of our marriage/lifestyle. though,
while i was pregnant, i stayed pretty close to sf. i
never wanted to be too far away from ucsf...just in
case. glad you're feeling great so far! keep drinking
3 litres of water/day and eating 90grams of
protein/day! :) it's hard work carrying twins!hugs,
jen

I just want to note that you're probably going to hear
from more people who had problems than those who didn't
- just by nature of the question, the people who feel
like they have the most feedback to offer will be the
people who had negative experiences. Which doesn't mean
those experiences aren't worth listening to! But there
are probably plenty of people who traveled around that
time and didn't have anything happen worth mentioning -
so they're not commenting.I flew back east, to Boston,
around 24-24 weeks, and the trip was totally fine. I
didn't notice any increased discomfort, I don't think I
wore any special gear - it was just a normal trip. Two
months later my kids were born premature at 33 weeks,
but I don't think that was at all related to the
travel. So do what feels right for you. I never had any
concerns about going anywhere or doing anything I would
otherwise normally do (at least until I was
hospitalized). I ran up to 21 weeks (and only stopped
when it became clear that it was too much for my body),
and was even planning to go up to Yosemite the weekend
after I ended up being hospitalized. I don't think any
of those things contributed to my preeclampsia (which
ultimately is why the babies came early). But it's
impossible to say, so just stick with your gut and the
level of activity/risk that feels comfortable for you.
And check with your doctor. My doctors were generally
cautious but optimistic. They said travel would be
fine, and didn't really push me to slow down until I
got into the third trimester. If you book your ticket
now, and end up not going, you can probably use the
credit from the flight towards a future trip - maybe to
take the babies to meet the relatives! Or just wait and
make it a last minute ticket, if you can afford to pay
a little more. Good luck! Hope you continue to feel
awesome, right up until your awesome little babies are
born!

contrary to most folks, i almost never bathe our girls
together - have only done so a handful of times over
two years.i put on girl in her room with a gate
(http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2970281&CAWELAID=141761896&cagpspn=pla&pla=plab&camp=PLAPPC-_-PID4318658&KPID=4318658)
at the door. or in her crib with a stack of books. or
downstairs in the pack 'n play with hbo's classical
baby 2 on tv.it's never been relaxing or enjoyable for
me to bathe them together. i really enjoy the one on
one time. i think they do too.i also bathe them during
the day often, after lunch before nap. we've never
associated bath with bedtime. sometimes if one girl
doesn't take a good afternoon nap, i'll bathe with her
while the other's napping. we take long fun baths
together. we don't get a lot of one-on-one time, so i
really cherish it. if you enjoy the time alone with
them, i'd not extend the nanny's hours. just shake
things up, try out some new bath routines until you
find something that's relaxing and enjoyable. maybe
each child every other day? i also still sometimes use
the primo big bathtub
(http://www.amazon.com/Pri-340W-EuroBath-Pearl-White/dp/B000056OV0)
inside the tub. even at 2 years old. the girls like
feeling supported in it, i think. hope this helps.my
best, jen

I agree with bathing them together. Mine are 11 months
and I just started and although I still get nervous
when taking one out and quickly drying that one before
getting the other out, it's much better than listening
to the one not being bathed scream the entire time.Good
Luck!

Ditto all the dual-bathers. I use a large no-skid mat
at the bottom of the tub , only a few inches of water,
and (tip lifted from this forum) we have a "sit down or
get out" rule. Every time one tries to stand, I say
"sit down, please." Three warnings and out you go -
have only had to do it once or twice. We usually have
an awesome time (though we've for sure also had the
type of evening you describe!). We also only do baths
3ish times/week. For bath toys - I highly recommend
toys that can become waterfalls (like these - bonus
points for being stackable - :

and/or rubber ducks and other squeezable creatures with
holes in the bottom that can become squirters. My two
basically squirt one another clean ;).

I don't have a LOT of advice, since we never considered
an au pair, since we don't have any space for one. But
I do know people who have used au pairs for their
infants, and have had good experiences. I also know
people who have had bad experiences. I think if you
decide to go the au pair route, you should do the
interviews very carefully, and look for someone with
some experience. (My understanding - which could be
wrong - is that au pairs can work for two years, via
one year contracts. They can work for one family and
extend the contract for a second year, or find a second
family for the second year. And there are always au
pairs who had a contract that didn't work out - maybe
the parents' circumstances changed, kids got into
preschool early, etc. So you might want to look for
someone who has already done some caregiving work -
here in the US, or back at home. You could also
supplement the au pair with a nanny for a few hours a
week - maybe during preschool pick up, or for the
evenings, right before you get home from work. Or
whatever time of the day seems to be most challenging.
Even with some extra nanny hours, that would probably
still be less than a full time nanny. We have a nanny
who comes four days a week, and my mother, who lives in
the east bay, takes care of the kids the other day.
It's nice, because it saves us money and they get to
know their grandmother. That said, she's not an
employee, so when she doesn't do things the way we like
them done, there's not always much we can do about it.
So our arrangement has challenges, too!The cost of care
for two kids is crazy, and - as you know - the costs
don't seem to go down when you start preschool!
Whatever you figure out - good luck!

you might just have a night owl for life! :) sleep
does beget sleep in infants. there's a chart in the
front of 'healthy babies, happy twins' that's useful
to fill out for a week - to track meals, naps, night
sleep...see if you can detect a pattern to hone in on
the best sleep schedule for that child. i assume your
girls are fraternal. it's just the beginning...of
different needs. two people, siblings, same birthday.
:)good luck! best, jen
