1. Mentoring expectant twin families
--------------------------------------------------------
CarinSF - 9/10/2013 10:41 pm
As the facilitator of the New and Expectant Parents
Group, it occurred to me that it would be really
helpful for families that are gearing up for this wild
adventure of twin parenting to get a glimpse of how the
magic all happens. To that end, I'd love to try to
match up expecting families with families that have
made it through the first couple of months and would be
willing to invite a parent-to-be over to their home for
a half an hour or so to show them around, talk about
how you set things up initially and what changes you
made over time, talk about baby gear essentials and
show tips and tricks for wrangling two babies and
getting out of the house successfully. I remember
reading all these books and still not really having a
clue about how to handle the practical aspects of
parenting twins. Now that I've learned everything the
hard way, it would be good to spare others the tedious
trial and error process! If this sounds like something
you would be interested in doing, please reply to this
post letting me know (1) if you want to provide or
receive mentoring (2) what part of town you live in (3)
what your availability is (4) the best way to contact
you (5) any special interests, i.e. if you have an
older child too or are a single parent, etc. If you'd
prefer to communicate this info privately, I can be
reached at CarinChou at gmail dot com.Thank you in
advance--I posted this already on our New and Expectant
POM Facebook page and I was so touched by all the
wonderful twin parents who were offering to share their
expertise! What an amazing village of support we have!

Hi Mama's-Am looking for any advice/help/suggestions
you can offer as I'm only at 27 weeks PG w di/di twin
girls & the belly is getting pretty rough. Both inside &
out - it feels like its going to explode/split open/is
just so hard & tight that it's near impossible to get
comfortable day or night... Sleep positions I've
figured out the best i can do -- but during the day is
getting worse. And worse. It feels better when I'm in
the pool or at yoga - but that's only hours a week -
other than that - it's killing me. I've got the support
belt for when I go out which helps a little - but I'm
literally just talking about the discomfort while I'm
around the house.Anything you did that actually helped?
I'm all ears :-)

Hi Petra! I'm so sorry about the discomfort! I'm not
sure I have the answer, but I have some referrals for
massage and chiropractors.I have been seeing JJ at
Mindful Body on California/Divis. She's inexpensive and
gentle. 510-478-5240I have also heard great things
about Kari Marble, but never used her. I think she's at
CPMC.If you are interested in chiropractics, I was
referred to Dr. Cianciolo by my OB. I'll be seeing him
for the first time on Friday, so I can't speak from
personal experience yet, but I've heard good things.
Otherwise, if you spend your whole day staying off your
feet then know that you are in good company... my
company :-) Its boring and it makes my back tired, but
I'm spending most of my day on the sofa. Oy, the things
we do for these kids!Good luck!

4. Rec's on Twin Nursing Pillows and Twin Schedulers?
--------------------------------------------------------
suellenl - 9/10/2013 2:19 pm
Hi folks,We are expecting twins this fall and I'm
considering purchasing a Twin Z Nursing Pillow and the
Twin Scheduler sold through the same website - we have
a 3.5 yo, and for him I didn't really like the My Brest
Friend pillow (it was OK) but I really relied on my
daily nursing/pooping diary for the first 6 weeks.
Nowadays, though, I've heard there are good apps one
could use for monitoring your kids' schedules. I'm
wondering what people's thoughts are regarding the Twin
Z, especially since I only see used My Brest Friend
twin pillows on Craigslist. Thank you in advance for
any input!Suellen

5. Clean Energy
--------------------------------------------------------
shielahingorani - 9/10/2013 9:51 am
Dear SFPOM,Would we be able to include this in our next
mailing? Although the Sept 15th meeting will have
passed, I think it would be good to have it included in
a newsletter. I'm forwarding the "Climate Parent"
email on just in case you (like I) have become more
interested in ways to effect positive change for a
cleaner environment (changing course from a fossil fuel
driven society to a clean energy society). This helps
our national security (no need to go bomb Iraq,
Afghanistan, Syria if we aren't dependent on Middle
East Oil), helps lower health care costs (millions
affected with asthma from coal burning power plants),
hopefully lessens global warming and the glacier melts
(those with Bay front property in SF will be happy :-)
in addition to preserving the ecosystem), and just a
better attitude and public policy towards use of our
natural resources. I will be on a biz trip sunday the
15th, but will hopefully make the next meeting. And by
the way, Michel Brune (Sierra Club) is a terrific,
knowledgeable speaker. I just heard him on NPR and I'm
quite bummed I won't be there to hear him speak. If you
are interested in this topic and would like me to keep
you in the loop on other ways in which we can be heard
or you want to spread the word, please do let me know.
We can definitely use a stronger, more unified voice.
Kind regards,Shiela------Original Message------From:

hear about Climate Parents?Sent: Sep 9, 2013 9:23 AMHi
folks, This is a friendly reminder about the launch
party for Climate Parents, taking place this coming
Sunday afternoon, September 15, in Mill Valley,
California. Hope you can make it! As I said in the
original invitation I sent you: If you care about
kids, you should care about climate change. It's the
problem we HAVE to solve if today's children are to
have a decent future. In my book HOT: Living Through
the Next Fifty Years on Earth, I wrote that protecting
our children from climate change is now part of every
parent's job description--no less important than
providing proper food, shelter and medical care. Yet
most parent remain absent from the climate fight.
Climate Parents, a new organization I'm helping to
found, aims to change that. If we succeed, we believe
it could be a game changer, compelling political and
business leaders of all stripes to join the fight for a
clean energy future. Please come to the Climate Parents
launch party on Sunday, September 15, to hear more
about our plans and how you can get involved. Speakers
include Mike Brune, the executive director of the
Sierra Club, and (by video), my old pal Bill McKibben,
the author and founder of 350.org. And no, you don't
have to be a parent, or a grandparent, to work with us.
You just need to care about kids. Please do RSVP so we
know how many people to plan for. There will be
delicious food, thanks to our sponsors at Savory
Thymes, and heavenly wines, thanks to my friend David
Graves of Saintsbury Wines (one of the few leaders in
the wine business who "gets it" on climate change, as
you may have read in HOT). Thanks! Mark Hertsgaard You
should be able to see the invitation in the body of
this email. If you do not, please see if you see a
"click here" prompt to see the image, OR, just click
into this link below (the link is fool-proof).

Oh sister, I've been there. My bambinos never really
got he whole boob thing and with an added toddler, my
time was really at a loss for time (and I had lots of
help for the first 2 months). Rule with twins and bf:
whatever you decide is perfect. A couple trucks with
the pumping:1) invest in the madela freestyle (you can
walk around and do things which is huge)2) turn that
sucker up as high as you can comfortably stand3)
massage a lot at first to avoid clogs (during, after,
in the shower - if you ever get one)4) I'd stuck to 6-8
times per day for the 1st 2 months as my body adjusted
to it all (they'd feel pretty sore if I didn't). After
that, I reduced gradually to 4x and got the same amt of
milk. This is totally doable and I plan to keep it up
for possibly a year.5) definitely wait till the babies
are bigger before you spend too much time fighting the
breast. Consider a nipple shield at first to help them
latch. (I could get my twins to nurse with it, but it's
really hard to double nurse with the shield - that's
when I gave up)6) get a couple of podee bottles or
bottle holders to assist with feedingGood luck. You're
doing great.

Agreed, you have to do what feels right to you. Don't
beat yourself up about this - you are doing great! I
started supplementing with formula early on and it took
a lot of the stress off. I'm sorry to say I can't
remember when I did this or on what schedule. (But that
just proves how fast this phase is over and you will
feel sane again!) I did work with a lactation
consultant (free through Kaiser). Another thing I did
occasionally early on was pump one boob while I
breastfed a baby on the other. That way I was still
bonding with one while pumping and I felt like it also
helped my milk flow equalize so that I was able to more
successfully tandem feed later once both babies had the
hang of it. (I found I had to do them one at a time at
first - especially the boy, he had trouble at first.)
Good luck!

We also used the inflatable duckie tub inside the
bathtub during the transition to dual bathing. Before
that I would do one at a time and the other would play
in the pack n play but at a certain point they just
didn't like it. Baths were tricky for awhile but they
do get easier as they get more coordinated and used to
it. At 21 months we still do every other day though -
unless they really need it. Because even though it's
"easier", it's still not easy. I also like that this
way it's not tied in to bedtime routine so on nights
when we get thrown off schedule for one reason or
another they don't NEED a bath to calm down for bed.
And on weekends we'll do it after breakfast or in the
middle of the day if it's more convenient!

The woman who moderated the expectant and new parents
group when I was in it - I think her name was Amy?
always sang the praises of au pairs. Perhaps if you
reach out to Natasha she can get you in touch with her?
I'm sure you'd have to take your time with the
interview process and be careful about who you choose
but if you have the room for an au pair you could save
a ton of money and stress. Even though my nanny is very
mellow, it is still stressful for me when I'm trying to
get home on time some days and there is a last minute
fire at work or bad traffic.
