I received a list of the breast pumps that my insurance
will cover (given ACA mandate). I'm wondering which
one you would recommend? Based on talks with others,
it seems I'll possibly need a couple of different
styles, but insurance will only cover one.*Madela

Wow! Your insurance covers the Medela Symphony?!
That's incredible! It's a hospital-grade pump and
considered to be the best. I used the Medela Pump in
Style with my first, but I've been renting the Symphony
and using it at work with our twins, and I love it.
It's quick, quiet and efficient. It's heavy, and I
have to carry it in my own bag, but it's worth it. I'd
definitely recommend the Symphony for use at home or
work. For travel, I'd go with the Pump in Style (the
first one you've listed?), or one of the others.

I've used the Ameda purely yours, Medela symphony and
medela pump in style. I recommend renting a Medela
symphony for the first month or so to establish your
supply (something I didn't know when I delivered and is
probably my top regret to date) and then getting your
insurance to purchase the pump in style. Background: I
used the symphony in the hospital and then came home to
the Ameda. The Ameda worked fine, though is definitely
noisier and I didn't like how the parts were assembled
so you had to tuck a whole piece through the hole of
the pumping bra instead of just the flange. On the
positive side, it did have a longer cord and was pretty
small/very easy to move around. I had no carrying case
or bag or anything.I had a few supply issues and my
lactation consultant recommended getting the pump in
style instead, so I did, and there was no change in
output, length of time needed to pump, etc. I was sure
there would be, but surprisingly the Ameda worked just
as well. The pump in style is a lot more portable as
far as grabbing the bag if I need to pump in the car,
etc, though the downside to that is that the actual
pump is connected to the bag so it is bulkier when
you're moving it around the house. Finally, I did rent a
hospital grade at 2 different points, maybe around 6
weeks and again at 4.5 months to see if it would help
my supply, if it was more efficient, etc, and it never
made any difference. Yes, it was quieter and seemed
better overall, yet the only way to measure is time
pumped and output and neither of those improved
unfortunately. I had another lactation consultant tell
me that hospital grade pumps are really most effective
in establishing supply so really during that first
month. After that, a double electric pump is probably
going to be the better choice.

Hello, Letter of recommendation for Maria that I
wrote. This serves as a letter of recommendation for
Maria we could not recommend her more highly for any
family seeking professional, gentle care for their
newborns.Upon her arrival at our home, Maria was met at
the door by an anxious mother and father, with fussy
babies and a chaotic environment; after two months, she
left behind a happy, healthy babies; relaxed, confident
parents; and a household organized to meet an infant's
needs. Her sterling skill set, professional approach
and kind temperament turned what could have been a very
difficult time into an exciting and fun chapter in our
family's life.SkillsMaria is a wealth of knowledge
about babies' and mothers' medical and emotional needs;
what I found extremely impressive was her methodical
plan of action for our child based on a clear-eyed
assessment of our baby's needs, medical history, and
our own wishes. she prioritized our family's needs in
terms of what we needed to learn and how quickly.
First, she implemented a sleep-eat schedule that soon
had all three of us anxiety-free and eating and
sleeping better. Within a week she taught us to feed,
soothe, bathe, diaper and clothe our baby. From there,
she worked with us side-by-side to put her teaching to
work. Maria was extremely committed to leaving us fully
competent at the end of her stay and worked throughout
the assignment to make sure we had plenty of supervised
"hands-on" time with the baby; remarkably, she was able
to do this while allowing me to get enough rest to
function normally and adjust to my own new sleep
patterns.Additionally, she was enormously helpful with
breastfeeding, and the myriad issues that come along
with it. When she arrived, I was ready to give up on
nursing, having had little success in producing an
adequate supply of milk and incurring a lot of pain
doing it. Within a week, her advice on positioning,
latching, pumping and the importance of rest and fluids
had my babies on breast milk for six out of eight
feedings.ApproachMaria approach to teaching is
extremely diplomatic and nuanced. Recognizing the
hormonal ups and downs of new mothers, she is not
dogmatic or bullying about her opinions. Rather, she
assesses the situation and suggests solutions based on
the situation at hand. She is a "listen first, talk
second" person, whose applies sound judgment in a
professional manner.Maria impressed us with her respect
for our privacy and her inclination to maintain
appropriate boundaries between herself and my husband
and me. Her attention was focused almost exclusively on
our babies. She was neat and tidy, and kept all not
only the nursery in perfect order.TemperamentWe could
not have asked for a sunnier disposition in our home;
Maria cheerful attitude was a real morale booster
during the difficult adjustment period. She takes her
job very seriously, but I wouldn't say she takes
herself very seriously, and she certainly enjoys the
silliness that babies inevitably bring into the
household. I found myself laughing every day of her
stay with us and I believe her presence contributed
greatly to our twin's calm disposition as well as my
own newfound confidence. In short, Maria is a gem. We
could not be more grateful to have had her with us for
this critical period in our twin's development and
during this time of transition in our own lives. Please
feel free to call me at the number above with any
questions regarding Maria and know that she comes with
our highest recommendation.Goodluck!

Congratulations! At a minimum, aim to drink 3 litres
of water/day (so your urine runs clear), eat 90 grams
of protein/day, and swim to provide relief! :) I
found it easiest to eat enough protein by making shakes
each night with greek yoghurt (I think Fage had the
most protein/serving, ~18 grams), whole milk, and Jay
Robb vanilla whey protein powder
(http://www.jayrobb.com/protein/whey-protein-vanilla.asp).
I ate a lot of eggs too. I bought the whey powder at
Whole Foods. Under guidance, I also periodically took
Floradix -
http://www.florahealth.com/product_categories.cfm?category_id=4&prod_id=87
- to ward off anemia (common with twin pregnancies). I
also took these prenatal vits -
http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=326649&catid=308207&aid=338666&aparam=38512654275brandSuper_Nutrition&device=c&network=g&matchtype=
- I bought them at Rainbow Grocery or Whole Foods, and
I've bought them online here a few times too. It was
easiest to take them at night after my protein bomb
whey yoghurt milkshake; that way it never upset my
stomach.Lastly, 25+year (and over 1000 babies!) midwife
Maria Iorillo - http://www.wisewomanchildbirth.com/ -
agreed to take me on as one of her 'July EDD' clients.
She saw me for prenatal visits, acted as my (super!)
doula during labor, and provided postnatal home visits.
I saw her in addition to my prenatal care at UCSF (and
vaginal birth at St. Luke's). Can't say enough about
Maria's expertise and guidance throughout my pregnancy,
birth(s!), and postpartum period. Simply cannot
recommend her highly enough. Email anytime if you have
any questions. Always happy to help. My best, Jen PS
