3. Update: New and Expectant Parents' group
--------------------------------------------------------
CarinSF - 1/10/2014 5:01 am
I have recently heard from the folks at DayOne and it
looks like they're now going to be closed until at
least mid-February. In the interim, I would like to
host meetings at my home in the inner sunset. Please
join me from 10-11:30 am on WEDNESDAY, January 15. I am
located in Forest Hill, on a street with ample parking,
and I am one block from the Forest Hill muni station.
I am scheduling this during a time when my twins will
be at preschool, so you and your babies will be able to
relax in a quiet, toddler-free environment. Please
email me at carinchou@gmail.com to RSVP and I will
reply to you with my exact address. You are welcome to
park your stroller in my garage if you'd like, but if
you drive it is likely that you will find a spot right
in front of my house, and you will be able to schlep
your babies up without even loading them into a
stroller. Looking forward to seeing you soon! Summary
for tired parents:When: Wednesday, Jan 15, from
10-11:30Where: My house in Forest Hill, RSVP for exact
address Contact info: CarinChou@gmail.com

Congratulations!! Wonderful that you've made it this
far!! I would also suggest to talk to your doctor about
waiting, if everything is ok and healthy. Even
singleton babies are considered 'full term' at 40
weeks, but some (actually, 50%!) are not ready at that
point. I started inducing at 38 weeks (I had pre
eclampsia that turned severe at that point, so I didn't
want to put anybody's at risk), and it took 7 days.
Ended with a c sec. My body and the boys simply weren't
ready yet. Went through everything on the menu for
inductions (sex, prostaglandin 2x, foley ball, pitocin
(4 rounds I think, which made me swell up like a
sausage in the microwave....I gained 20 lbs of water
weight and couldn't bend my knees without fear or
bursting), breaking water...oh and baths and clary sage
oil, and I don't know what else). The boys were simply
not ready. Everything was fine, the boys were healthy
and are healthy, and if it hadn't been for the pre
eclampsia I would have held out longer. But if there
are medical indications, then it's better to be safe
(even though the doctors wanted to start inducing at 35
weeks). Although c secs are perfectly fine and safe,
there do have some negative side effects (not
necessarily serious). Breast feeding can be harder
(often is perfectly fine but can be...I didn't have
enough milk because my body wasn't ready yet, and never
caught up, also, I lost a lot of blood during the c, so
my body had to focus in healing, which it did just
fine, but milk suffered). The babies won't have the
natural "stress" of going through the birth canal,
which is actually good for them. I don't remember all
the reasons (if recommend watching 'the business of
being born', taking it with a grain of salt, but it has
some very interesting observations). I am 100%
convinced that c secs are a fine procedure, but that
they should be reserved for "emergencies". Same with
inductions (since in many cases, they end up with c
secs). In one of or birth classes we heard that there
is a natural sequence for inductions, and often one
leads to the next, to the next, to the next, and then
it's c sec time. Not in all cases (far from it), but in
a few. So, if you feel fine, don't have any medical
issues and the twins are fine, I would hold off. But
stay in close contact with your doctor (and a midwife
or doula?). All the best! It's fantastic you made it
this far!

We could NOT afford it, but we were LOSING OUR MINDS,
so two weeks after the kids came home, we hired someone
to come 2x per week. That was really all we felt we
could swing. We found someone for $30, but I think I've
seen $25-$45, so you're definitely in that range. One
issue is that it's a little harder to find someone
who's willing to come fewer nights, as many night
doulas want to work (and get paid for) full time, since
that's their only source of income. We did find
someone, and we were looking very last minute... but
your options might be more limited than if you're
looking for someone 5x/week.Of course, many people
don't use a night doula at all! So you will make it
work, whatever you do. But the more help you have,
generally, the easier it will be for all of you. Being
well rested makes a WORLD of difference.
