We have mold growing in the ground floor of our house
from what appears to be ground water. Our 20 month old
son has asthma, so we are anxious to get this problem
solved quickly and permanently. We need someone who can
identify the problem and the fix (and hopefully do the
repair work as well). If you have a referral for someone
with this type of experience/expertise, we would be
grateful. Thanks.

What is standard practice when it comes to a nanny
giving notice? 1 day? 2 weeks? 1 month? 2 months?

I would hope as soon as she knows she's leaving to give
her current employer time to search for another nanny
or child care option. Just out of courtesy and
practicality, I would think a month or more would be
best but at very minimum 2 weeks. I hope you're asking
to cover your bases and not because your nanny just
gave you a ridiculously short notice. Even 2 weeks
would stress the bejesus out of me but I found my nanny
in 2-3 weeks under a non-stress situation so it's
doable. Best of luck whatever your situation.

I'm looking for other twin parents to share what
they've learned about SFUSD schools. Having gone to
SFUSD schools as a kid, I think there is a range of
quality that is worth researching. I think we can
figure it out if there are differences in family
styles/ needs if there is an honest sharing of
experience. Then there are considerations that are
unique to twins. For example, a lot of the smaller
schools or private schools have limited capacity to
split up twins into separate classrooms. Are there any
bigger schools that have caught peoples eyes? What are
parents experience with twins in smaller/ private
schools in SF?Common Core is a different way of
testing, but may still leave pressure on teachers and
kids to keep preparing for the tests instead of
learning....we'll see! Hopefully it's a step in the
right direction!

Since you asked about private schools - our kids are in
Stratford preschool for a second year and are going to
K next year. The school might offer transitional K as
well if there are enough kids needing it. We are very
happy with Stratford, and since it goes all the way to
8th grade, we are hopefully set for a while. The school
policy is to leave the decision about separating twins
to the parents in preschool but requires separation for
K. We are looking forward to separating ours since they
are very focused on each other and miss interacting
with other kids. We were on the fence about keeping
them together for the last year of preschool but
decided to let them stay together for better or worse.
If you have any questions about Stratford, I am happy
to answer them.

Yay! That's awesome - and so great for your kids! We
ran an article on cloth diapering in Multiplicity some
time within the last couple of years which you might
find helpful. Our family did cloth all the way, and
it was great. Honestly, if you don't even start with
disposables, you'll never miss them. One of the things
that surprised me in researching it all tho was how
surprisingly cost-efficient using a service can be
(over the expense of gas/water, etc. at home. The
diaper services have huge operations set up for just
that.) If I recall correctly, it's not exactly "6 of
one, half dozen of another" but maybe something akin to
7 to 5... Re prefolds - those seems like a huge
timesaver, and honestly - I'm not sure where you'd buy
any that aren't pre-folded, these days.Whether you
would consider a service or not -- Tiny Tots in
Campbell (which services SF w/ weekly delivery/pick-up)
has tons of that stuff for sale, and you can find a lot
on their website. They're family-run, very green, and
were always great to deal with - superhelpful with
amounts/sizes, etc. and getting prepped before the
babies came. I also used Green Mountain Diapers for a
lot of stuff by mail order. Both places have a lot of
helpful info online, too. Natural Resources on
Valencia Street near 25th occasionally offers a really
handy cloth diapering workshop, and sells stuff...
they're not cheap, but DO provide a multiples discount.
(Also, if you sign up with them as a member, they have
a TON of great books/videos you can check out -- stuff
that the library system doesn't have.)One thing I'd
suggest tho at this stage - don't invest in too many of
any one type of cover... each kiddo is different, as
is each parent - so give yourself a little wiggle room
once they've arrived to try out different styles of
covers and whatnot - some will fit your babies better
than others, and some parents have preferences as to
snaps vs. velcro, etc. (especially for
middle-o-the-night changes) and those things are a bit
of an investment initially, so maybe only purchase a
couple in each style until you know what you like
best.I'll look up which issue that article is in, and
let you know -- it'll be one of the ones archived in
the "Files" tab here on BigTent (& you can actually
always check the "Articles Index" kept there, too, to
figure out where to find things we ran in the
past.)Good luck to you with everything!! Stay
hydrated, and rest up! : )

Hi! I got into cloth diapering a little later in the
game, maybe when my twins were 8 months or so. I was
always interested but overwhelmed by the choices.
That's awesome you're thinking about it now. The
BumGeniuses pocket diapers worked best for my family. I
liked the soft microfiber exterior and that you could
separate the insert for a deeper clean and quicker dry
than all-in-ones. They're just like disposables for the
husband and family, too, at least the Velcro version,
but I like the snaps as well.I tried the pre-folds but
at 8 months, my twins were rolling over and thrashing
about so much it was too crazy trying to get the
snappis on them without scraping them and then the
extra step of putting on the cover was more than I
could handle. If you start out with pre-folds and
covers this might be less of an issue because newborns
move around less and you'll be used to them and so will
they. I liked the idea that prefold wearers potty train
earlier because they know they're wet but I needed
something that wicked away moisture because the wetness
seemed to irritate their skin.I have several brands of
cloth diapers I could sell you if you wanted to try out
different styles before committing to one. I had been
meaning to post them on craigslist and the classifieds
but hadn't gotten around to it. I think one on-line
website (Jillian's Drawers?) has a deal where you can
try 5 or 6 and return what you don't like and keep and
pay for those you do, just fyi.Feel free to email me if
you're interested.I have the following:Kissaluv
unbleached cotton contour (M/L)Thirsties cover one
sizeBlueberry cover one sizeGrovia cover with 2 snap
inserts2 BumGenius all-in-onesHalf a dozen older
generation Fuzzibunz pocket diapersSome pre-folds I
know I have snappis somewhere...20+ various generation
BumGenius pocket diapers (though I'm not sure I want to
let go of these just yet but we can talk)All except the
BumGenius and Fuzzibunz were used very sparingly and
purchased new. The Fuzzibunz were purchased second hand
but my kids outgrew them pretty quickly so they weren't
used a whole lot by us, more by the family before us.
Many of the BumGenius were purchased new but some
second-hand.

Rainbow has LOADS, in all different forms (several of
them yummy chewables.) Scarlet Sage on Valencia has
lots of different powdered formulations that are easy
to put into stuff... I do recall my pediatrician,
early on, setting us up with a liquid one that you had
to refrigerate, which was supposedly better absorbed,
but can't recall the details... But - I suppose any is
better than none, and there have definitely been
studies showing that kiddos on probiotics get sick less
often, in general... (that's what WE'RE hoping,
anyway!!)Good luck! I hope you find one that'll work
for your wee ones!
