My name is: Jennifer Perkins ChenMy phone number is:

jenniferdperkins@gmail.comMy caregiver's name is:
Cassia AppelMy caregiver's contact information is:
cassiaappel@comcast.net 415-387-3089 - home
415-368-2281 - cellShe/he is looking for: Postpartum
doula/night nanny position She is available: February
1stI employed this caregiver: From November 2013
through January 2014 (3 months)Your children's ages:
Preemie newborns to three monthsI cannot say enough
about how much Cassia improved our quality of life
after the birth of our twins! She is fabulous. We
have b/g twins, and she has cared for them five nights
per week since they day they came home from the
hospital. She is a trained and certified postpartum
doula with extensive experience. She has personal
experience (from her own child) and extensive
professional experience, and came to our interview with
a three page list of references. She is extremely
experienced with twins and the vast majority of her
clients have twins, although many have enjoyed working
her with enough to bring her back for their subsequent
singleton pregnancies! She has a very calm, patient,
affectionate, soothing manner and was very reassuring
to both my husband and I as well as our preemie
newborns. Our twins love her and took to her
immediately. Many times, we were holding screaming
colicky babies and staring at the clock for hours
before she arrived, only to have them settle down and
fall asleep within a few minutes of her taking over
their care. Although I thought it would be impossible
to trust anyone completely with my newborns, after only
a couple of nights I was so relaxed that I would
literally shut the door and sleep all night without
worrying. She clearly cared about them and was amazing
when they were sick and when they were cranky from
reflux. She was absolutely wonderful with helping us
understand their night-time rhythms and feedings, and
they were both sleeping through the night (minimum of
six hour stretches) by 7 weeks, which I think is
largely due to her ability to identify when to start
trying to manipulate their feeding schedule to improve
our quality of life. She has a great way of offering
advice based on her extensive experience, but is very
easygoing about it and deferred to us when it came to
any change in their schedule. I was not a first-time
mom, but I imagine that her additional training as a
lactation educator would be invaluable to someone who
is trying to get the hang of breastfeeding. Finally,
not only did she clean all the bottles, pump parts, and
the twins laundry, but she was always looking for other
ways to lighten the load for my husband and I. This
even included chatting with our toddler at 5 am and
sometimes keeping our dog with her overnight so we
could sleep even better.I would absolutely recommend
Cassia without any hesitation. My family is going to
miss her tremendously! Please feel free to contact me
with any questions or requests for additional
information.

bhavna12 - 1/17/2014 11:15 am
Hello:our kiddos came down with a fever a few days back
and recovering from that. In addition, they are
congested and having a bad "hoarse-like" cough at
night. We have the humidifier on all night, rub vicks
vapor rub throughout day and night (on back, feet, and
chest), and have given them a bit of ibuprofen (more
for fever than anything). We also sprayed some infant
nose drops (saline) to relieve stuffiness. We are going
to see the dr this afternoon but wanted to get any recs
from the group on cough and remedies. Our kiddos are 16
mo (b/g). Both of them being sick is definitely
challenging. :)

just a head's up - not to freak you out - but only to
keep you alert: swine flu is going around (my husband
got it at new year's). for coughs/colds, i give: 1.
http://www.hylands.com/products/hylands-4-kids-cold-'n-cough
- suppresses cough2.
http://www.gaiaherbs.com/products/detail/746/GaiaKids-Black-Elderberry-Syrup
- immune support3. spoonfuls of homemade concoction -
garlic soaked in honey - give the kids spoonfuls of the
honey - like this:
http://nouveauraw.com/raw-foodism-blog-posts/garlic-honey-throat-cold-and-flu-remedy/4.
for congestion, i chop up an onion and put it in a
bowl by the head of the bed - works wonders. or you
could hang it in a netted bag in the room at bedtime.

Don't have much to offer - just time. It's really awful
when you're in the middle of it. Some people swear by a
teaspoon of honey. Of course, my currently VERY picky
eaters refuse to try honey - they won't let it anywhere
near their mouth. (They're the same with ice cream -
serves them right for not trying new things!) So I
can't speak to the effectiveness of it, but it couldn't
hurt (best if you can get local honey. They should sell
it at the farmers market.)I've also heard elderberry
syrup recommended, but again, I've never tried it. I
think mostly you just have to wait it out. =( Hope it
gets better quickly!

I'm not a Dr, but one of our little guys used to always
get that night cough when sick. It was always croup.
We'd sometimes alternate between a steamy shower and
cool night air. We'd just wrap them up and take them
out (not after the steam though, they'd be wet), and
the cool or even cold night air would open their lungs
up and the cough would stop. If the Dr says croup,
then try that night air, the change of pace is helpful
too. Sounds like you're doing a lot of the right
things already though! Best wishes for healthy babies
soon! Vicki-----Original Message-----From:

PS-moving too fast here, not a steamy shower for the
baby, just steam up the bathroom running a very hot
shower and sit with the baby on your lap and breath in
that steamy air. -----Original Message-----From:

Our pediatrician contacted us earlier in the year to
inform us of H1N1, strain of swine flu. there have been
10 cases in CA so far, scary. Thanks for heads up. Hope
your husband is doing better. Was his symptoms just
severe flu like symptoms? Everybody in our family got
the flu vaccine, which covers H1N1, H3N2, and influenza
B so hopefully we are good. As for kids, I will have to
check the shot log and see. Some good remedies. Will
try the cough syrup? and honey concoction. The fever is
what gets me worried and it only goes down after
medication so its been 2 days so want to get them both
checked out. I use to live in UK and my parents from
India and they recommended this which has been great
for congestion. a drop on the inside of their shirt so
they breathe it in
constantly.http://www.olbas.co.uk/products/olbas-for-children.ashxEmil

My oh my...Glad we are not in infancy again, yet rather
aware we'll need support, ideas, feedback, and
commiseration. We are in our 40's, first-time parents
of b/g twins, and painfully aware we have no answers to
many situations.Alessandra

There's a toddler support group that currently meets
quarterly for discussion. The next meeting is coming
up, on Feb 10.I think the meeting is on the events tab,
and this should be a link:

with you - so glad we're not infancy anymore, but
toddlerhood has brought some huge new challenges!

Ferry building farmers market - Saturday morning, go
early around 9am After, you can take kids to playground
on Washington/Embarcadero. Gets crowded but earlier the
betterWalk along Embarc, take kiddos to Fisherman Wharf
aquarium. Fun! lots of greenery for them to play
outside of park fence as well. Our kiddos got sick a
few days back and it seems to have hit the peak so not
sure how much they will be able to take advantage of
the weather. :(

The beach? Ocean beach, Baker beach or the Chrissy
Field area? It's probably nice enough for that. Or you
could go for a short walk in Muir Woods. Parking gets
crazy on the weekends, but you could probably go over
there today and park without much trouble. There's a
mile or so of flat, wooden boardwalk, where they can
run free (or take a break in the stroller if it gets to
be too much walking). Botanical gardens is free for SF
residents. It's a great place to bring a picnic, set up
your picnic blanket in the middle of a field, and let
the kids roam. (Though there's plenty of room to run
away, and there's a pond and a fountain, so depends on
whether your kids are manageable in that kind of
environment.)The zoo, but probably only worth it if
you're a member. Otherwise too expensive! Same for the
Discovery museum in Sausalito.Noe farmers market (Sat
mornings, I'm pretty sure) has music for kids - there's
a little tent set up, with carpets to sit on, and there
are always families there and kids dancing around. (Not
enclosed, though.)Parkside library has a family (i.e.,
toddler) story time on Sat mornings @ 10:15, and is
right next door to McCoppin playground, so you can head
outside afterwards to play in the sunshine for a
while. So many options! (Although why is it I can never
come up with something when my kids are staring
expectantly at me?)

Thank you. Ended up buying Boulevard G4. Can't wait to
get kiddos in there as their infant seats are too small
now :) Ended up getting from Rightstart yesterday.
Geetu helped me and she gave me a 10% discount so ended
up being cheaper than Amazon based on current sales
price. Thanks for all your help and advice. Great help.
