I actually thought he recovery wasn't at all as bad as
I expected. I took a few doses of the pain meds but was
able to stop on day 2 or 3, I don't remember exactly.
So the c sec itself not that scary or difficult. I did
have trouble breast feeding and never was able to
produce enough. My suspicion is that it was because my
body wasn't ready to deliver (even at almost 39
weeks...) and was preoccupied with recovery after I
lost a ton of blood during the procedure. (But it did
recover really well, just my milk suffered). But it's
totally possible to have plenty of milk after a c sec!
(I just wish I hadn't thought that if I just worked
harder, I could do it, too...)Anyway, my advice:- if
you don't absolutely need a c, then try to avoid it.
-if you do need I have one, perfectly fine, but try to
push it out as long as possible (and safe) so your body
can keep baking and preparing itself as well for life
with the babies out. - Get a lactation consultant lined
up. I was really surprised that I didn't get to see a
lactation consultant at Ucsf until many hours after
delivery and then again not until day 3. I was a little
disappointed, especially after Ucsf's claims they have
such a support system for breast feeding. - Watch the
YouTube video(s) on baby-led-latching (there's a great
WHO video of a woman in India...). I did that with my
third and he had a good latch right from the start (and
after only one more visit to a lactation consultant, it
became a great latch). - keep in mind that a pump is
great, but for some women, it's very ineffective. But
if you do get milk nicely with a pump - pump away! :-).
I've heard a really great piece of advice to alternate
twins on the breast (at one session, one twin is on one
breast then the other, while the other twin is on
formula...which is a little gentler than having both
twins on and then topping off both with formula).- be
aware that breast feeding can be very painful at first.
I wish I had known that! It wouldn't have changed a
thing about my desire to breast feed but I would have
been a bit better prepared that it's not ALL roses :-).
Good luck!

My twins are now 9 months old and I had my c-section at
37 weeks due to B breach and size. The best advice I
got was to take all the meds they want to give you and
get out of bed. It seems like a lot but what will
really help you recover is walking. The only good
thing that came out of my daughter being in the NICU
was motivation to walk the 200 feet to see her every 3
hours. Doing this allowed me to start tapering off the
meds at week 2 and be totally off them by week 3. I
think the best think my doctor did was give me all
internal stitches. No staples or stitches to be removed
later. It took about 10 minutes longer than if they had
just used staples but it is totally worth it. If your
partner wants to take pictures prepare them for how
fast the second kid comes out. My husband just made it
to the warmer to see baby A and they were already
bringing over baby B. he totally missed her coming out.
I would say there was about 30 seconds or less between
kids. As far as breast feeding goes. Both my twins went
into the NICU after surgery. My son was able to get out
after only a few hours. I think what helped me the most
was pumping on the hospital pump as soon as I got out
of surgery. I think the most important thing is to
not put presure on yourself. Things will be crazy in
the hospital. People will be coming in and out at all
hours of the day and night. This makes it hard to get
comfortable. Things will get a lot easier when you get
home. Since my daughter was so small she was getting
bottles of breast milk with 22 cal formula for a full
month. My son also need some formula the first few
days. Within a month we were tandem feeding like
champs. Just relax and have no expectations. Giving
your babies a bottle does not mean they will never take
the breast. I found that mothers milk tea helped and a
nipple shelled helps with the transition.

Congrats!! I second pretty much everything Leah said
above. I used lanolin religiously for the first 4-6
weeks and only had bad nipple pain for a few days
around 3 weeks (used soothie gel packs to feel better).
The only thing I'd add is that I've been breast feeding
my guys one at a time from the beginning and we're
almost at 6 months - it is a time suck but I found
tandem feeding too much to handle for me. My milk came
in around the 4th day and I was glad I was still in the
hospital and seeing a LC daily. But even though I
wasn't producing much we still put the boys on every 3
hours, which I'm convinced helped them learn to latch
and helped my supply come in. We supplemented for the
first 3 weeks (with formula and then with what I
pumped) too. Make sure you eat and drink a lot of
water and stay on top of your pain meds - and get
someone to make sure you are doing that! Like Leah
said, if you have other questions feel free to email me
at annamo at gmail.com. Good luck - you'll be great :)
