Hi there! Sending you lots of good thoughts for a
successful labor and birth!I was also induced at 37
weeks. Twins were my second time giving birth.First
pregnancy, labor began when my water broke, so we
started induction of mono-di twins at 37 weeks by
breaking my water. (To somewhat address the comment
above, research for induction of mono-di twins was
compelling enough to agree to the timing of the
induction as opposed to getting to 38 weeks.)*I had one
of my homebirth midwives with me (from first birth)
acting as a doula, so she helped with decision making
as far as how to begin the induction and when to start
pitocin based on OBs recommendations. After five-six
hours of not transitioning into active labor (walking
around, doing a bit of acupressure), started pitocin
that was increased every half hour until active labor
kicked in. Babies were born about three-four hours
later. I pushed for 15 minutes and Baby B was born 9
minutes after the first. 10-11 hours total labor.
(For my first pregnancy I pushed for three hours :/
nine hours total labor, so yes, it definitely varies
from person to person and birth to birth!)I do not know
for sure, but I think labor went relatively fast from
the time pitocin began to giving birth because it was
my second time around. Breaking my water first and
having several hours of gentle labor (hardly painful at
all), walking around, settling in to the hospital and
environment was very positive. my midwife recommended
bringing in some things from home, like electric
candles (these were great to offset fluorescent
lighting), photos of my older daughter and family,
fabric/blankets to drape over hospital furniture (I
brought two baby blankets and used them to cover two
chairs), lavender spray, Happy Mama Spray (love this
product!). it was really nice to have a few special
things from home in the hospital.I imagine that you
will be started out on a gentle course of induction and
will progress slowly toward active labor so that you
have time to get an epidural if you want, and so that
the induction somewhat mimics a natural labor. Pitocin
can cause problems with nursing (can delay milk coming
in), so just be ready to potentially have to pump to
help your milk to come in as soon as possible;
colostrum is already there so do nurse right away if
you can!). USCF will most certainly have a hospital
grade pump you can use and take one home with you
(rental) as well. I rented a Medela Symphony from
DayOne, but I am not sure if their new store is open
yet? you will definitely want a hospital grade pump
for the first month or two (I kept it for six months;
insurance covered rental cost w/a prescription).Lastly,
if your OB did not explain how the induction will work,
it is possible that s/he may not give you a lot of
details the day of. If that is the case, and you want
details, you really should insist on being told what
the flow chart of your labor will look like from start
to finish; what progress looks like, what happens if
your labor doesn't progress by a certain hour, what are
your options for types of induction, etc. Don't be
afraid to have the options explained and then take some
time to consider how you want to move ahead. There is
not only one way of doing things and definitely talk to
other women (if you have time!) about their inductions
and do as much research as you can now so you know what
the OB is somewhat talking about and you can ask
questions. Reading detailed birth stories can also be
really helpful if you don't have time to track people
down and talk. I have to imagine you can find lots of
blogs about being induced; maybe try to avoid reading
bad experiences unless the blogger/writer has solid
advice to offer for how she would have done things
differently.Hope this helps!Let me know if you want any
other info. from my experience. Again, best to you and
congratulations for getting to 37 weeks!!!
*w/hindsight being 20/20, i would have talked more with
my OB about going to 38 weeks, just to give those
babies another week in utero. but being induced at 37
weeks went relatively well and thankfully, neither baby
spent any time in the special care nursery or NICU.

Congratulations! I was also induced at 37 weeks, 10
weeks ago. Second pregnancy, first induction. Every
delivery is so different but two things to keep in
mind: Once you have had the pitocin they insist on
strict monitoring of the babies. I wasn't prepared for
this and thought I would be able to move around more
(if you've had many NST's you know how fun it is to
keep two babies on the monitors at once). I ended up
getting an epidural earlier than I had intended because
of this. The other thing is that it can take a while for
things to ramp up with pitocin (certainly not for
everyone, but I know that was true for me and for a a
couple of friends who were also induced), but when
things get going they can really GO. I took forever (15
hours!) to dilate from 4 to 5 cm, but then in 2 hours
went the rest of the way. They actually weren't even
planning to examine me for another 2 hours, and my
contractions -although frequent and intense- never even
got regular when they realized pretty suddenly that
Baby A was coming imminently. Then both babies were
delivered within minutes, 3 minutes apart. So just know
that the rate at which things are moving can change at
any time, but that's true even if you aren't being
induced.Bottom line you'll be wonderful!!! You are in
such wonderful hands at UCSF (that's where I delivered
my first). Congrats on making it to 37 weeks and best
of luck for a great delivery!!

hi soon to be mama! congrats! you're getting close! 37
weeks is early for induction, in my experience, if
everyone's fine. it usually doesn't start until 38 or
38.5 weeks, or even 39. so, i'm assuming your ob has a
good reason for starting now? read through this post
(link below) from a few weeks ago. it'll provide lots
of info. i had an 80 hour induction. hell. my body
wasn't ready. i was okay. baby a was okay. baby b was
okay. in hindsight, i wish i'd opted for many more
days of close monitoring and delaying the induction.
inductions can fail. it's rare. but if your body
really is not ready, they can. question i'd ask the
ob: if yours didn't progress after a few days, would
they discharge you, send you home? or go to c-section?
how would that work? i'd ask the ob. have a read
through the info in this post and if you have any
questions, just let me know. my email is
noursejlm@gmail.com. obviously, unless there's a great
reason from your ob for inducing at 37 weeks, i'd call
tonight and request pushing it back by a day or two or
15. really. i did that by one night because my doula
was with another birth. my ob didn't mind at all. in
hindsight it all seemed very arbitrary to me. when
induction started. i wish i'd checked in every day for
monitoring and kept pushing it back day by day. to let
the babies cook a bit longer. (helps with feeding,
colic, etc.)i started with foley bulb without epidural
(or epidural port). misoprostol in rare instances
causes uterine rupture. here's the link:

this is helpful. best, jen

congratulationsbest of luck...sorry for lower case, my
shift key is broken...you are in good hands at ucsf i
was induced with pitocin at ucsf for pre-eclampsia at
38 weeks with mono-di identical twinsi was in labor for
4 days doing whats right for you and your babies can be
hard in the face of lots of medics with lots of
opinions. keep assessing- right now, is baby a ok, is
baby b ok, am i ok, and if yes, then do what you feel
is right without being pushed.i demanded going home
after 1.5 days bc labor was just not happening at all
even with unconventionally high doses of pitocin and i
couldn't sleep in hospital. i was bloated with water
and got a massage at my house and lost water bloat with
24 hs rest at home. medics were very pushy the didn't
want me to leave, but we were all healthy and were much
better off regrouping 24 hs. at home and coming back
again. won't happen to you, but just an example of the
internal assessment that helped me do the right thing
for us against strong recommendations from docs even
though everybody was fine….medical opinions can
become really overwhelming when you're in labor. tell
advocate what you want before hand and let them
advocate and pester for you.i had my acupuncturist come
in and that's what got labor started finally with my
water breaking at day 3 of pitocin.they have midwives
and lactation specialists there to assist, but you need
an advocate to pester staff to get them to come visit
you if you want that.i wanted that but did not see
either specialist even though i was in hospital for 10
days. the specialists are in high demand and they are
understaffed. your advocate has to be super-annoying to
get results.i'm sure you know this, but you need tons
of help at home for first 1-2 mo. after c-section, not
to mention with twin babiescongratulations good luck.
bless you and your babies-darca

I have purchased dry ice from the San Francisco Ice
Company before - 45 Williams Ave. They sell it by 10
lb increments, but it's really cheap and 10 lbs will
last about 24 hours. Don't put the dry ice in any
tightly sealed container as pressure can quickly build
up. You should also transport it with ventilation in
your vehicle (cracked window or non-recycled air fans
on) to prevent a CO2 build up in the car which is not
good for your health or consciousness.

Thanks for reposting this!!To our members -- we realize
that this process may seem like a bother. We've been
forced to take these measures by nannies or other
professional caregivers who've enrolled in the Club,
posing as parents of multiples, to promote their own
services. While we make every effort to screen
incoming members, in the past, 1 or 2 non-POMs have
gotten through - so we tightened up our referral
process to help protect our members, and ensure that
the recommendations being posted are genuine. Thanks
for your patience and understanding!

I would definitely talk to your doctor, or at least
call the advice nurse or lactation specialists, if your
health plan has them. It's probably nothing to worry
about -- perhaps your little ones are going thru a
growth spurt, and that's taking more out of you? Your
milk changes as they grow, to provide them with what
they need, so it's a pretty intensive experience for
your body... Feeding 2 fast-growing little people (+
doing all the other stuff you're doing) uses a lot of
energy! BUT - worrying takes energy, too, so talk to
a pro who will put your mind at ease, and may make some
suggestions about what you can do differently.I hope
you get to the bottom of this soon -- feel free to post
what you learn, if you think it might be helpful to
others!! (That's a note to EVERYONE reading this...
for everyone that's gone to the trouble to post a
question or an answer, there are plenty more out there
with the same issues who haven't gotten around to it
yet... so help a fellow POM out and share what you
know!)Good luck to you!
