I'm returning to work April 1 and am looking for a full
time nanny for our girl twins. I've seen multiple
postings for part time nannies, but haven't come across
any full time recommendations. Thanks!

It all depends on you, and the nanny, and the number of
hours she works, and how generous you want to be.I
think that if your nanny is full time or close to it,
it's fairly standard to offer paid vacation time and
paid holidays. Some people offer one week paid vacation
time, some offer two weeks, some offer one week of her
choice and one week of your choice (like, you plan to
take a family vacation, so she'll be off, but you still
pay her while you're gone). You can set it up however
you want.San Francisco also requires that employees
earn (paid) sick time - one hour of sick time earned
for every 30 hours worked, up to 9 days. Of course, if
you're paying under the table (not withholding taxes)
then you're not as bound by city and state laws...
since you're not following them! (No judgement - lots
of people pay nannies under the table, and lots of
nannies prefer/request/require it. You have to decide
what you're comfortable with.)As far as vacation time,
there's no law about it, so you aren't obligated to
offer any... but I think it is fairly
standard/reasonable. (And if you don't offer anything
extra, the nanny might end up taking a job with better
benefits - just like in any other field.)

30-40 hours/week seems like a lot, since you will also
be home full time. I mean, if you love the nanny and
you can afford it, then the more help the better! But I
think you could get away with less.I think the main
things you will need help with are nights (which you
CAN do by yourself, but it's really tough at the
beginning) and being able to get out with your son, or
at least help your son get out every day. It can be
really hard to get out of the house with infant twins.
It takes a long time to feed them (depending on your
kids and the method of feeding that works for you, it
can be over an hour) and then they need to sleep, and
they need to feed again like 5 minutes after you
finish! I know I didn't get out of the house with the
kids for a couple of weeks after they came home. But
your 2 YO is going to need to get out and run around,
burn off some energy, etc. So help would be really
useful in that regard - either someone to take him out
to a playground, etc., or someone to stay in with the
twins for an hour or two while you get out with him.
(Your son is a little young for preschool, but a drop
off program might be great for him, if you can find one
nearby. He gets to run around, be social, learn new
things, and have some time away from the babies. You
get some quiet time in the house, when you can focus on
the babies and/or nap!)And then nights... it depends on
you, your partner, your stamina, your babies, etc...
but for the first few months neither my husband or I
could get a solid 3 hour stretch of sleep at a time.
It's REALLY hard to function during the day when you're
that tired. Night help (which we could only afford for
a couple of months, 2 nights/week) makes a HUGE
difference in your ability to have good days. That
said, night help is really expensive - mostly in the
range of $30-$40/hour, 8 hours/night. And many night
doulas will want a 5 day/week commitment, since this is
their living. Most people only use night help for 2-4
months. So... I guess I can't really tell you what you
will need. I only have the two - I didn't have to think
about an older one, too. For your ability to feel sane,
be somewhat cheerful, and be able to enjoy this phase,
I'd probably prioritize night help. Maybe night help,
and then someone a few hours a week during the day? And
then you can ramp up on the daytime help after you're
done with night help?(Also, in regards to people who
want to start right away, it wouldn't be a bad idea to
have someone start a month early. If you go full term,
you'll be TIRED, and it will be nice for your son and
the caregiver to have a chance to bond for a bit,
before the twins come and take over the house.)Sorry
this is sort of all over the place - just trying to
throw out any additional information that might help
you figure out what your family needs. The bottom line
is that you CAN do it without help - people do it all
the time (help like what we're talking about is SO
expensive - a lot of people simply can't afford it),
and you will almost certainly all survive. But if you
can afford help, it will make the whole process much,
much easier. Good luck! And congrats!

Hi Barimom, I'm sorry, I just saw your post. I'm sure
you've worked it all out by now, but to answer your
questions...At the time I posted this my twins were 3
weeks. I pumped 25min after a breast feed session as
rec by my LC. Regarding the transition, I just stopped
topping off during the day cold turkey and let them
tell me when they were hungry. It means feeding them
more often bc they aren't getting as much as they would
if I topped off. I now only top off one feeding at
night before bed. Btw, it took 3 weeks for the nipple
pain to abate, but it is finally gone!
