Attn, parents o' toddlers!! Please watch BigTent/FB
for details on our upcoming giveaway of 2 copies of
"The Honest Toddler" - a book we know you will
appreciate!! It's essentially parenting advice FROM a
toddler, and we suspect you'll recognize some of the
recurring motifs.... We'll be giving one each to a
deserving mom and dad at the upcoming Family Outing on
June 1st (winners need not be present to win, tho.)Stay
tuned for details -- the book is a hoot, and offers
some much-needed relief to busy parents of toddlers,
especially!Happy Mothers's/Father's Day, from SFPOM!: )

I would like to start taking our 8 month old boys on
day trips on the weekends. They are becoming more
curious and are getting bored just being in the house
everyday (me too). I was hoping for some ideas of
places that are kids/baby friendly, interesting for the
little ones and not too annoying for the adults. We go
to the park, go on walks around the neighborhood and
car rides to my parents in the east bay but looking for
something a little different. Love to hear where you
take your little ones.

There are some amazing children's museums in the Bay
Area, like Habitot in Berkeley (especially great for
your age kids), the Bay Area Discovery Museum in
Sausalito, and CuriOdyssey in San Mateo. (Then of
course, loads of stuff right in SF, like the Randall
(free) and the Zoo, the Cal Academy of Sciences, and
all the art museums. (Lots of these offer great deals
on memberships, including ones that have reciprocal
visiting privileges with other similar institutions
around the Bay Area.) If you haven't been to
Children's Fairyland in Oakland, plan on doing THAT at
some point - and definitely do the puppet shows while
there -- kids are usually mesmerized by those. For
outdoor roaming, there's always the beach and local
regional parks. The Stanford Campus has some great
stuff outdoors to explore (like the Rodin Garden and
the Papua New Guinea garden), and picnics are always a
nice addition. There are some lovely farms around,
like the one at Rancho San Antonio in Los Altos --
great (& easy) hike/stroller ride, and you'll see farm
animals, as well as deer, rabbits, turkeys, quail and
other critters, just on the way.TRAINS are always fun,
and the steam train at Tilden Park can't be beat, and
is rather a bargain, as I recall. There's also a SMALL
train (for when yours are a little older and can go by
themselves) in the park in San Mateo (I think it's
called Central Park, maybe?)A lot of the historic homes
that were farms in the Bay Area have a great outdoor
component, usually with animals and/or interesting
displays, like Ardenwood in Fremont... check out
www.bahhm.org for a bit more info.History San Jose has
a really cool "preservation park" type thing that's
easy to get to, and really interesting to explore (more
for adults, but the kids might enjoy the roaming around
there, and stairs/porches, etc.) and that has a regular
park adjacent....There's a public garden place in
Walnut Creek that we stumbled upon once, that's really
fun, and also next to a playground/park... (just
looking up the parks/playgrounds in different cities is
usually a lot of fun, and you know they'll have all the
right amenities -- but it's a nice change of scene for
the grown-ups, who need it a lot more than the kiddos,
who'd be happy to go to the same place
endlessly...)Anyway - hopefully those might get the
ball rolling... have fun! : )

5. 4 month olds and napping - when will they nap for long
stretches?
--------------------------------------------------------
julesjonesla - 5/6/2014 12:21 pm
Our kids just turned 4 months and while there is a
light at the end of the tunnel in terms of night sleep
(they are sleeping longer stretches at night), the day
naps don't seem to be regulating. I put them down
every 1 1/4 - 2 hours depending on when they are
showing sleepy signs. I try putting them down drowsy
but awake. My daughter usually cries for 5-15 min
before falling asleep (with me going in and comforting
her periodically - not picking her up). My son usually
falls asleep on his own within 5 min w/o fussing. They
only sleep for 30-45min each nap and take 4-5 naps a
day. My son will sleep for 1.5-2.5 hours in the
morning if I put him in the swing, but the remainder of
his naps are short. I'm wondering...1. when did your
kids start to consolidate their naps from shorter naps
to longer naps?2. How did longer naps happen? did
they happen naturally, or is there something you did to
help them start to sleep longer? 3. how long did you
leave your kids in the crib after they woke to see if
they would fall back to sleep? sometimes my kids wake
after these short naps crying and sometimes cooing. i
leave them for 5-10min, but they've never fallen back
to sleep.thank you so much for your help!!

6. Night Sleep changes
--------------------------------------------------------
bhavna12 - 5/6/2014 10:35 am
Hello all,Just wanted to get some thoughts on night
sleep changes. We have 20mo b/g twins and they recently
(past week) have been sleeping 10-11 hours at night
instead of 12 hours which they have been doing
regularly since they were 4 months (with exception of
being sick). We are very fortunate, knock on wood.
:)When do kids start to sleep less at night? Is this
just a phase and will they return to normal or do we
need to start doing something different. We have
switched night time from 8pm to 830ish to see if that
works but that doesn't make much difference for morning
wake up time.Interested to hear thoughts on other POM
members.Thank you
